Dark Reign 2 Redesigns, WIP
🕑 Added 2023-01-08 23:03:07 +0000 UTCDark Reign 1 and Battlezone II have some of the best RTS unit designs I know of, from a visual PoV. ( Edit: DR1 is unfortunately not playable on modern Windows. I installed from my original CD and got palette corruptions. The downloads/patches are apparently risky/compromised. )
Dark Reign 2 wasn't bad... or good. I guess it just suffered a bit from being an early 3D game. Anyways, I thought I'd do some redesigns of the units, changing style a bit, going away from the lanky big-feet aesthetic.
After locating my old disc I managed to install it on Windows 7 by running the setup/setup.exe instead of the autorun thing. Then I followed the directions for the Editor, allowing me to easily view the units.
I'll continue adding more over the next few days.
Also attaching a Kawaiik chibi .obj model (anno 2010) someone asked for. Looking at it now, I think I'd lengthen the legs a bit. I textured and rigged it, but only very haphazardly. It's a pretty bad model. The first and last I made in Blender. The tris aren't well optimized. I textured it with front & back projection, then I used a tool DrPetter wrote to convert the UVs to what could be a better UV map. My idea was to use this a workflow, allowing me to paint in ortho mode, sculpt with that as reference, then convert to a proper UV map. I never made a proper, efficient UV map though but just ran the tool once as a test.
