Remember that Midnight and the rest of the Oracion Seis were still in the Tower of Heaven at this point, we can tell since we saw Gray training with Ultear which means he hasn't joined Fairy Tail yet and since Erza joined Fairy Tail after Gray it meant she hadn't escaped the Tower which meant that the revolution hadn't occurred yet ... yeah

Ultear also wasn't really too far gone evil, it's that she justified all of her actions with the belief she'd undo all of her crimes through the Ark of Time, so Killin people didn't matter to her since if she was successful all of it would be undone anyway. Heavily ends justify the means

Just for clarification azuma was using the trees power to attack erza and she ended up using the trees power against him. Ultear was only obsessed with zeref in order to get the world of great magic that hades mentioned. Hades told her if she got zeref to create that world she would be able to go back in time and stay with her mother (which is what she wanted). She wanted to return to the time when she loved her mother and didn’t resent her.
