Shadows in St. Mungo's II - The Secret of Avalon: Chapter 02
🕑 Added 2025-04-10 12:30:01 +0000 UTCHarry Potter’s office, hidden in a rarely visited wing of the Ministry of Magic, was wrapped in a thick silence — the kind you don’t just hear but feel — the silence of stopped clocks and thoughts too fast for words. Rain drummed insistently against the stained-glass windows, a melancholic symphony that only deepened the stillness in the room.
On the desk, Meredith Crane’s diary lay open, as if waiting for a confession that never came. The name — Avalon — appeared between the lines with the persistence of an inconvenient memory. It repeated itself, stubborn, like a poorly played note on a piano. The edges of the parchment were crumpled, the ink smudged where Harry’s fingers had passed too many times. This wasn’t reading — it was excavation.
He rubbed a hand across his face — unshaven, out of mere formality — and let out a sigh heavier than he wanted to admit. Meredith had written with trembling hands. Fear — that much was clear. But fear of what? Or who? And above all, why had she written his name?
Before he could turn the next page, the door burst open with violent force. It slammed against the wall as if kicked in, and in came Dawlish — as discreet as a detonation.
“Potter!” he barked, his voice laced with accusation, like a verdict already cast.
Harry didn’t bother feigning surprise. He turned slowly, almost insolently, his eyes narrowed.
“If this is about my coffee, I’ve had three. On the Ministry’s tab, of course.”
Dawlish didn’t bite. He marched in with the heavy steps of a man familiar with storms, his damp cloak swinging behind him. The door shut with a rough snap, and the room seemed to drop a few degrees.
“Spare me your mediocre humor,” he said, tossing a scroll onto the desk like hurling an indictment. “You accessed the sealed records on Level Six. The Department of Mysteries, Potter. You broke into restricted territory like a second-rate thief.”
Harry looked at him the way one might look at a pawn fallen from the board.
“I assume you didn’t think I did it for sport.”
“This is not a game!” the auror roared, now flushed with anger. “We received an official raven this morning. Direct from High Command. They want to know whether you’re acting alone… or if there’s someone else digging up tombs that were meant to stay sealed.”
Harry leaned back with a soft creak of the chair. His gaze was tired, yes — but beneath the exhaustion, there was something steely. Controlled. Unyielding.
“Interesting,” he said coolly. “They’re more concerned with what I’m uncovering than with what happened to Meredith Crane.”
“Meredith Crane was unstable,” Dawlish snapped back too quickly, as if reciting. “She’d been warned three times. Obsessed with wartime ghosts. One among many.”
“One among many who disappear without a trace?” Harry countered. “She wrote my name. That’s not a coincidence.”
Dawlish hesitated. And in that brief pause — that minuscule lapse — Harry saw it: fear. Real. Unspoken.
“There are... things, Potter,” the auror muttered, shoulders sagging just slightly. “Things beyond us. Beyond even Kingsley. Ancient forces. Subtle. Invisible. Untouchable.”
Harry leaned in.
“Then why let me investigate?”
The answer came like a blunt blade — too bitter to swallow.
“Because no one else wants to. Because only you are foolish enough to die for it.”
A long silence stretched between them. The kind of silence that knows both sides of a war. They were on the same side — but in different trenches.
“You’re digging on cursed ground, Potter. And it’s going to bury you.”
Harry blinked slowly and said, in a tone deeper than intended:
“I’ve been to hell, Dawlish. More than once, actually. It’s lost its charm.”
Dawlish slammed his hand against the desk and spun on his heel. He stopped at the door, hand on the knob, but didn’t turn back.
“Start thinking, Potter. Maybe what you’re chasing isn’t the truth… but your own end.”
Then he left.
The door closed with a thud that echoed off the stone walls. The silence returned — but it was different now. Not the same as before. This one had teeth.
Harry didn’t move. He stared at the empty space where Dawlish had stood seconds ago. The scent of storm still lingered in the air. There was something new in the silence: an invisible presence. He closed the diary carefully — the sound of its cover meeting the pages felt disproportionately loud. Then he crossed to the wall-mounted bulletin board. It was an organized mess — clippings, notes, maps. Nothing elegant. Nothing chaotic. Just… necessary.
He pinned a new piece of parchment to the upper corner and wrote:
AVALON
He underlined it twice. Below, he began to draw the connections:
– Meredith Crane
– Department of Mysteries
– Projects shut down after the war
– Silent disappearance
– Links to old names?
He cleared his throat. Something was missing. Something… whispering.
Then he remembered.
Parker Graves.
A name that had appeared discreetly in the last pages of the diary. No emphasis. Almost ashamed of existing. Meredith hadn’t spoken of him. Only circled around. Maybe out of fear. Maybe for another reason.
Harry returned to his desk, grabbed his old notebook and wrote:
Graves — locate. Check current activity in the Ministry. Relationship with Meredith. Investigate projects terminated between 1998–1999.
The name seemed to echo — like a crooked painting in the gallery of memory.
He cast a spell, and the old map of the Ministry unfurled. His eyes scanned the lower levels. Level Six. There it was — a small room, no name, no designation. He’d seen it before. And Graves — yes, Graves had been responsible for it.
A tightening in his chest. Not fear. Recognition. Scattered fragments. A whisper overheard years ago, involving words like Avalon, Protocol 319, and mental projects. All spoken in hushed tones, as if sound alone might trigger a curse.
Harry closed the map. Dimmed the lights. The hallway lit the office only by enchanted torches, casting flickering shadows.
He grabbed his cloak. Secured the diary with protective spells. And before leaving, returned to the board. Beneath the word Avalon, he wrote in smaller letters:
“The truth isn’t buried. It was silenced.”
And then, he left.
He knew exactly where he needed to go.
~HP~
The corridor leading to the records wing was not the kind one stumbled into by accident. Narrow, stifling, and windowless, it felt more like a forgotten capillary of the Ministry — as though the very structure preferred to pretend it didn’t exist. The torches along the walls burned with a pale flame, casting flickering shadows that felt denser than the light they gave off.
Above the door, a crooked golden plaque hung, its corners darkened by the oxidation of time.
PERSONAL RECORDS DEPARTMENT — RESTRICTED ACCESS
Harry knocked with his knuckles — a gesture of bureaucratic politeness. He knew it wasn’t required — the tacit clearance granted by Kingsley gave him free rein on nearly every level. As long as, of course, he didn’t ask questions.
Today, he fully intended to ask them.
The door creaked open lazily, revealing a slender man with a frail build, tired eyes, and a perpetually sour expression. He wore a dark brown vest that had seen better days, and his thick, fogged-up lenses gave him the look of someone who read more out of habit than actual vision.
“Potter,” the man muttered, his voice dragging, as if he’d rehearsed that tone for all unwanted visitors. “Thought you’d filled your quota of trouble for the week.”
“There’s always room for one more line in the file,” Harry replied, with a half-smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
He stepped over the threshold without invitation. The air inside was warm and stagnant, and the scent of old parchment mixed with faded ink formed a stuffy perfume of bureaucracy. Shelves rose to the ceiling, crammed with leather-bound folders and records sorted with near-clerical obsession. Above all, a faint whispering filled the air — the automatic rustling of pages turned by enchanted quills working silently.
“I’m looking for a name,” Harry said bluntly. “Parker Graves. Department of Mysteries. Post-war.”
The clerk — Norbert Cresswell Jr., according to his badge — seemed to choke slightly at the mention. His fingers paused on the list he was reviewing, and the silence thickened.
“That name… is under classification seven,” he said at last, without lifting his gaze.
Harry raised an eyebrow — not provocatively, but inquisitively.
“Classification seven. That’s usually reserved for… threats to national security, isn’t it?”
Cresswell looked away. The sort of man who preferred hiding behind paperwork than facing truths.
“That’s beyond my clearance,” he murmured, and his voice wasn’t quite fearful… but close.
Harry crossed his arms, radiating a calm he wore like armor.
“I’m not asking for access to classified memos, Mr. Cresswell. I only want to know whether Mr. Graves is still alive. And if so, where.”
“Technically… that’s not confidential,” the man admitted, stepping toward one of the shelves, “but if Graves was transferred to the Dead Archive at the Department of Mysteries, then any data tied to him… is sealed.”
With a flick of his wand, a few folders floated to the counter. One opened on its own, revealing a somewhat faded photograph. Harry leaned in.
The man in the image was tall, angular, and stern. His dark hair fell straight to his shoulders, and his eyes — cold and direct — stared at the lens as if analyzing anyone bold enough to look back.
“He’s alive?” Harry asked, not looking away.
“He is,” Cresswell replied, nose wrinkling slightly. “Retired. Lives in Northumberland. Isolated. Hasn’t received a Ministry visit since 2005.”
Harry touched the edge of the photograph gently. The image didn’t move — it was a static copy, archived for legal reasons. And still, there was something in the man’s gaze that felt… unyielding. As if defying both time and parchment.
“Disciplinary record?” Harry asked.
“Nothing official,” said Cresswell — but the pause that followed spoke volumes. He conjured a silver quill, which began to write on a dark scroll by itself. “But there is an uncatalogued addendum: Conducted research outside standard authorization. Verbally reprimanded. Sector shut down after extraordinary audit.”
Harry narrowed his eyes.
“Project name?”
The silence that followed was louder than any answer. Cresswell looked at him with carefully measured seriousness. And when he finally spoke, his voice had the tone of a ritual:
“You know I can’t tell you that. Not even you.”
Harry smiled. A brief, humorless smile.
“Of course. But you’ve said enough.”
With a discreet duplication charm, he copied the photograph and slipped it into the inner pocket of his coat. He nodded politely and turned to leave. But as his hand touched the doorknob, he paused.
“One more question…” he said, without turning around. “Did Graves work with Meredith Crane?”
The silence crept in like a shadow. Long. Contemplative.
“She mentioned him frequently in internal reports,” Cresswell said at last. “But after 2003, they seem to have… drifted. Meredith requested a transfer. Some say it was because of a failed project.”
Harry nodded slowly.
Avalon.
The name returned like an old headache — not painful, but persistent. He left the department with heavy steps, and the image of Graves still lingered in his mind like a ghost that refused to fade.
There was something in that gaze — something between guilt and defiance. And Harry knew that look well.
It was time to head north.
~HP~
The journey to Northumberland was a melancholic passage through mist and empty roads, with a fine rain trailing alongside like a silent, loyal dog. Harry chose to Apparate as close as possible to the village listed in the records, but—as expected—the place was protected by ancient magic strong enough to throw off any precision.
He was forced to walk down a narrow trail of uneven stones, flanked by skeletal trees whose brittle branches cracked beneath his steps like old bones being crushed. The silence there was so complete that even the rustle of his cloak sounded intrusive.
This was not a place where one lived by accident. It was a place where one hid.
The cabin emerged gradually, cut into the hillside like a figure carved from the earth. Weather-darkened, its boards looked as though they had absorbed centuries of solitude, and its dusty windows barely knew light. Curiously, the door stood slightly ajar, and a thin line of smoke lazily curled up from the chimney like a forgotten thought.
Harry approached with caution, his hand resting near his wand.
“I figured you’d come,” said a rough voice from inside.
Harry stopped.
“Graves?”
“Come in. If they followed us, best not to stand exposed. The forest has too many ears.”
He pushed the door open carefully.
The inside of the cabin was dark, warmed only by a weak fire casting flickering shadows across shelves packed with leather-bound tomes, unlabeled vials, and instruments whose purpose defied logic. A faint smell of smoke, mold, and old potions hung in the air—like time itself had been bottled here.
At the far end of the room, sunken into a worn-out purple velvet armchair, sat Parker Graves.
The same man from the photograph, only aged—his once black hair now gray and tied back short; his face marked by lines the years had carved with surgical precision. But the eyes—those eyes—were unchanged: black, penetrating, watchful.
“You know who I am?” Harry asked, voice steady but guarded.
Graves let out a dry laugh, brittle as old wood.
“Everyone knows you, Potter. The Boy Who Lived. The war hero. The auror who never learned to stop digging.”
Harry didn’t reply.
Graves gestured vaguely toward the chair by the fire.
“Sit. If you made it this far, you’ve already found the name.”
“Avalon.”
The name landed in the air like a stone tossed into a lake—and the silence that followed was so thick that the crack of the firewood sounded like thunder.
Graves closed his eyes for a moment. When he opened them again, there was something fatalistic in them. An ancient weariness.
“That name... should’ve been buried with the bodies. Forgotten.”
Harry didn’t look away.
“Meredith Crane disappeared. And your name was in her records.”
Graves leaned forward, elbows on knees, as if the gesture alone might brace him for what came next.
“Then it’s true. They’ve started vanishing.”
“Who?”
“The ones involved. The ones who worked on Avalon. The ones who knew too much. The ones who remember.”
“And you?” Harry asked bluntly. “Why haven’t you vanished too?”
Graves smiled—a bitter, poisonous thing.
“Because I was faster. Cut all ties. Burned papers, erased tracks, disappeared myself before they could do it for me. But…” he stared into the fire, gaze distant, “the truth never really goes away. What we tried... it’s still out there. Somewhere.”
“So Avalon was a project.”
Graves only nodded.
“You came looking for answers. But you won’t find peace. Avalon was a promise made by men who believed they could shape the human mind through magic. Enhance consciousness. Tame impulse. Cure... evil, they said.”
“Mental magic,” Harry murmured.
Graves shook his head slowly.
“No. Far beyond that.”
He stood with some effort, walked over to a bookshelf, and pulled out an old, dark leather binder. He slammed it on the table, sending up a cloud of dust like a ghostly fog.
“It was about the soul. About separating the essence of being. Isolating what makes someone... someone. That’s what Mulciber tried to finish… when you faced him.”
The name sliced through the air like a blade.
“Mulciber was part of Avalon?”
Graves nodded, eyes fixed on some invisible point in the threadbare carpet.
“He was the final piece. The end of the line. He stole everything he needed. Spells, notes, drafts. And now, if Meredith is dead... then Avalon is being unearthed.”
A strange chill crept down Harry’s spine. As if the ground beneath his feet had started to give way.
He stood slowly.
“I need everything you’ve got. Reports. Names. Any fragment.”
Graves studied him for a long moment. Something in his gaze weighed intentions. At last, he pointed to the binder.
“Take it. But be careful, Potter. Truth has a price. And Avalon... doesn’t like being found.”
Harry said nothing. He secured the binder, cast a protective charm over it, and headed for the door.
But just before he stepped out, Graves spoke again—this time, his voice barely a whisper:
“If she’s still alive… Meredith may have left clues. But know this: you won’t like what you find at the end.”
Harry paused. He didn’t reply. He just opened the door.
The rain was steady now, slow and relentless, cloaking everything in persistent melancholy.
He stepped outside.
Since the beginning of this investigation, he hadn’t liked anything he’d found.
But he had absolutely no intention of stopping now.
~HP~
The rain still drummed against the windows, steady and insistent, as Harry crossed the threshold of his house. The sound was almost comforting, yet it carried the same unsettling sense that time outside — and perhaps the world itself — had been suspended, waiting for the next move on an invisible chessboard.
Kreacher, half-awake and visibly displeased by the hour, shuffled toward him with a steaming cup of strong tea. As usual, he muttered something about “improper hours” and “young people who don’t know how to rest.” Harry merely nodded in thanks and made his way silently to the study.
He didn’t light a lamp. He didn’t need to. The house was old — used to his footsteps, and he to it.
In the study, he sat at the desk. He spread out the files with the ease of someone assembling a puzzle whose edges he knew, even if the center remained a mystery. At the heart of the desk rested the binder.
It was an aged piece, the leather coarse to the touch, marked with a crest that time — and guilt — had nearly erased: the seal of the Department of Mysteries, or what remained of it. There was no magical lock on the clasp. Just a suggestive silence, as if Graves himself had known — if Harry had reached this point, the line of return had long been crossed.
With a snap of his fingers, Harry broke the seal.
The first page was sober, formal, written in tight, centered handwriting — like the old wartime reports:
Project Avalon – Field Notebook – Orion Classification
Authors: Parker Graves / Meredith Crane / Phillip Greengrass
At the sight of the last name, Harry’s stomach twisted — as if a familiar shadow had swept through the room.
He turned the page carefully.
What followed was a disturbing tangle of fragmented notes, incomplete diagrams, and symbols hovering between the rational and the arcane — mental structures, rune circuits, neural webs interlaced with magic.
Amid the technical chaos, a dark-inked note stood out:
"Theory: separate the consciousness from the central magical structure.
Results: emotional instability, identity loss, violent latency.
Ethical applications: not recommended."
Lower down, in a different, less formal handwriting — almost hesitant:
"The soul can be divided.
The problem is keeping it whole afterward."
Harry ran a hand over his face. The theory sounded insane... but it wasn’t unfamiliar. There was something perversely recognizable in that concept. Not to destroy the soul, but to fracture it temporarily. To break it in order to control.
A new diagram made him hold his breath. A human figure, drawn in precise strokes, surrounded by mental runes around the head. Isolated words floated near it: dispersion, return channel, magical anchor.
And then, dated 2002, he found a passage that felt closer to reality than anything else so far:
"Tests conducted with volunteer subjects indicate potential for induced mental torpor.
Fifth-layer magic. Coma-like state.
Unpredictable side effects.
Rosier was a mistake... but a revealing one."
Harry stopped.
Rosier.
He had been there. From the beginning. From Avalon.
The next pages carried newer fragments — the handwriting was Meredith Crane’s. The date had been scratched out, but Harry, with the instinct of someone who reads beyond what’s visible, guessed the text was less than two years old.
"There’s a pattern in the mental collapses. Victims linked by shared traumas.
Avalon wasn’t shut down — it was silenced.
And now... it’s waking up."
Harry’s hands trembled slightly.
Latent spells. Manipulated consciousness. Invisible triggers. Avalon wasn’t a place. It was a mental cell. A cage whose lock was set into the soul itself.
He leaned back in the chair, the binder still open. The fire had long since died out. The room’s darkness was deep, broken only by faint silver glints reflecting off potion vials on the shelf. The clock showed nearly four in the morning.
He rose in silence, walked over to the board he’d filled with Meredith’s records.
His eyes landed on the names that had become fractured pieces of a truth still taking shape:
Avalon.
Rosier.
Phillip Greengrass.
Mulciber.
Meredith Crane.
Her name seemed to pulse from the wall like a warning. Or a cry for help.
Harry whispered, into the quiet:
"Where are you?"
The only answer was the creak of the house — wood settling. But he already knew.
The past wasn’t buried.
It was waiting.
And he had only just begun to dig.
He stood there for long minutes, eyes jumping from one name to the next. Graves’s words echoed like a whisper that refused to fade:
Avalon doesn’t like to be found.
But it wasn’t him chasing Avalon anymore.
It had found him.
With a flick of his wand, he extinguished the last dying embers of the hearth. The smoke rose in pale spirals, like ghosts fleeing a sealed chamber.
He descended the stairs in silence. Kreacher lay curled in rags in the kitchen corner, muttering in his sleep. Harry didn’t wake him.
He pulled on his coat in practiced movements, fastened his wand to his belt, and, after one last glance at the sleeping house—
Apparated.
~HP~
Harry apparated in silence, emerging between two shuttered pubs whose peeling facades seemed to mourn livelier times. The alley was narrow and damp, steeped in moisture. Fog crawled along the ground like a hungry creature, wrapping around his feet with invisible fingers.
He walked briskly, eyes alert, and stepped out from the alley in front of an unremarkable building — discreet, anonymous. The last known address of Meredith Crane.
The door was protected by a simple spell, the kind that pretended to be complex just to scare off the curious. Harry traced a precise movement with his wand. A muffled click — and he entered.
He climbed to the third floor. No sound but the creaking of his own steps. The apartment remained just as it had the last time he’d been there — he had sealed it himself days earlier, more out of instinct than protocol.
But now, he knew what to look for.
He lit the lamps with a whispered spell. The room was as mundane as ever: technical books stacked without conviction, half-dead plants, an armchair worn into shape by time. Nothing screamed for attention.
It was as he passed through the kitchen that something made him stop.
On the tiled floor, a circular mark — dark, uneven, as if soot had been drawn by hands that didn’t want to be noticed.
That hadn’t been there before.
He knelt. Brushed his fingers lightly along the edge of the mark. Still warm. Recent.
“Someone’s been here,” he murmured.
He moved his wand and spoke firmly:
“Vestigia.”
A bluish mist began to rise from the floor, drawing traces of magic in the air. It was like watching the ghosts of past movements — overlapping footprints, faint touches on the doorframe. But something stood out: a silver sheen, brittle, as if the magic was far too old for this time.
He followed the trail down the narrow corridor, leading to the door of Meredith’s former study.
There, everything seemed untouched. Unmoved.
Except for one thing.
Resting on the desk was a red leather folder — empty.
He approached with caution. The leather was worn, and the seal, though faded, still suggested something official… or clandestine.
The label read, in formal handwriting:
Crossed Memories – Class 3 Correspondence – Unauthorized Archive
“They took the contents,” Harry whispered, his eyes sweeping the room as if expecting to find absence itself.
It was the same sensation as before.
He was too late. Again.
Someone was always getting there first. Not just removing evidence, but shaping the narrative.
He cast another detection spell — this one deeper. Something responded.
At the bottom of the last drawer, nearly fused to the wood, an old envelope shimmered under the spell. A nearly forgotten artifact.
Inside, a single name:
Benedict Rowle. Department of Mysteries — Division of Magical Neuroanalysis
Harry repeated the name under his breath, testing it like one recognizes a wrong note in a melody.
Rowle. The surname struck a chord. A war-era echo? A distant relative of the old Death Eaters? Or just a coincidence cloaked in a bad reputation?
He tucked the slip into the inside of his coat and gave the apartment one last look. There was nothing more to be taken from it — except the silence, heavy with absence.
He cast a stronger protective charm over the space. Not for security, but as a symbolic funeral.
As he stepped out, the sky was beginning to brighten at the edges.
The night retreated like an accomplice.
Avalon. Rosier. Graves. Rowle. Greengrass. Meredith Crane.
The names now formed a dark constellation, and Harry saw it with growing clarity: the pieces were returning to the board — and someone, perhaps more than one, was already playing them.
Before he could.
With a muted crack and a final glance at the sleeping city, he vanished.
~HP~
Harry woke with his face pressed against the desk. The wood, cold and damp, seemed to have absorbed the sweat that had trickled down during sleep. Beside him, the candle had burned down to the base, leaving only a hardened trail of wax over the scattered papers.
He didn’t remember falling asleep.
He sat up slowly, like someone returning from very far away. His head throbbed unpleasantly, throat dry, eyes blinking against the flickering dimness of the office. A shiver ran down his spine.
He’d had a dream — he knew that much — but only loose shards remained: a room far too white, a voiceless sound, and a name that echoed inside him… but which he couldn’t quite reach.
He rubbed his face hard. It had been happening more often. Ever since he’d started reading Graves’s dossier, the dreams had changed. They weren’t just dreams. They had texture. Weight. Presence.
He staggered to his feet, bumping into a forgotten teacup, which tipped over and spilled cold tea across the floor. He ignored it. Walked through the stain as if it weren’t there.
He made his way to the wall where he kept the boards — clippings, notes, lines of connection — the silent mural of his previous investigation. Next to it, a new panel was taking shape. At its center, in firm lettering: Avalon. From there, red and black arrows extended: Crane. Rowle. Greengrass. Mulciber. And one unnamed point, marked only with a dash — as if the very concept refused to be named.
His eyes fixed on the name Rowle, underlined in red ink.
Benedict Rowle.
He knew he needed to learn more — but access to the Department of Mysteries was a fortress, every stone engraved with spells and politics.
He turned back to the desk and opened the bottom drawer, one he rarely touched. Inside rested a small black box. Within, yellowed papers, broken seals, letters that should never have been kept.
At the bottom, what he was looking for:
Terence Boot — former Ravenclaw, independent magical research consultant… and more importantly, ex-analyst at the Department of Mysteries. Division of Mental Experimentation.
Harry hesitated for a moment. Then conjured a scroll.
"I need to speak with you. It’s urgent.
And you’re the only one who isn’t afraid of Avalon."
— H.P.
He sealed the letter, tied it to the owl’s leg, and released it through the window. The cold pre-dawn wind swept inside like a whispered warning.
When he returned to the desk, something felt different.
Graves’s dossier was still there, open where he’d left it. But there was a new page. A note he swore hadn’t been there before.
"The first symptom is the loss of linear time.
Memories overlap.
The mind conforms to the pattern.
Resistance is possible, but rare.
Beware the mirror."
Harry frowned.
The handwriting wasn’t Meredith’s. Nor Graves’s. There was something... impersonal about it. Too precise. He passed his wand over the page.
“Revelio.”
Nothing. No change, no recent enchantments. The note was real. It was there. Had it always been?
Or… had someone placed it while he slept?
The chill this time ran deeper. Not just physical — mental. As if a part of him had been opened without permission.
His eyes slowly turned toward the corner of the office.
There, leaning against the wall: the mirror. Old. An heirloom from Sirius’s mother, with an ornate and severe frame. It was covered by a dark cloth, as it always had been. He had never liked that mirror. It always seemed… too alive.
But now he couldn’t look away. The dark cloth seemed to… breathe. Pulse. As if something behind it was waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.
The clock struck three times.
Harry flinched. Forced himself to look away. Headed to the kitchen. He needed coffee. Something hot. Something real.
As he passed one of the darkened hallways, something moved.
A shadow. Quick. Caught in the corner of his eye.
He stopped. Turned. Nothing.
But the feeling remained.
Someone was watching him.
Not from inside the house.
From inside him.
~HP~
London’s sky was stained with copper and lead when Harry stepped through the doors of the Leaky Cauldron. The muffled hum of voices and the familiar scent of butterbeer mixed with fresh pumpkin bread wrapped around him like an old coat.
The pub was full, but not crowded — a mild Wednesday always brought the same kind of clientele: wizards finishing their shifts, casting weary looks into the bottoms of their glasses and pretending the world outside didn’t demand so much.
In the corner, by the crackling fireplace, Ron waved. Three mugs waited on the table; Tom, the barman, was filling the third with mechanical gestures.
Hermione sat beside her husband, wrapped in a light grey coat and in words that cut through the air with intensity. She stopped when she saw him.
“Merlin, Harry… you’re pale,” she said, already on her feet, pulling him into a firm hug.
He returned it with a half-smile that carried more fatigue than warmth.
“Good to know I’m still irresistible.”
Ron laughed, already handing him a beer.
“You look like the depressed version of a Ministry-licensed Dementor. And that’s not a compliment, believe me.”
Harry sat, gripping the mug tightly in his hands.
“I needed this,” he said, voice low and dragged. “I need to pretend — even just for a few minutes — that the world still makes sense.”
“Does it?” Hermione asked, trying to sound light, though her eyes brimmed with concern.
Harry hesitated.
“I can’t say much. The patterns are repeating: disappearances, erased records, the Ministry sweeping traces under increasingly smaller rugs.”
Ron leaned back, arms crossed.
“But there’s something new, isn’t there?”
Harry’s gaze turned toward the fireplace, as if the answer might be hiding in the flames.
“I thought that after last year, things would clear up. That, with time, the chaos would stop. But it’s the opposite. I’m walking down a dark corridor, and every door just leads to more darkness.” He paused. “And worse… I’m starting to feel the effects. I forget things. I hear voices that aren’t there. Sometimes I see shadows where nothing should be.”
Hermione placed her hand on his. A small gesture — but firm.
“No one walks through the dark without getting scratched, Harry. Not even you.”
He nodded, vaguely.
“Sometimes I wonder if I spent too long in it. And if, somewhere along the way, I became part of it.”
“Oh, don’t start,” Ron cut in, with more tenderness than irritation. “You’re just tired. That’s all. And… missing her. You haven’t talked to her, have you?”
Harry dropped his gaze to the mug.
“Since that coffee. Six months ago.”
“Then why not write?” Hermione suggested gently, as if walking on sensitive ground.
“Because…” Harry searched for the words like someone reaching into a pocket with a hole in it, “…because maybe I don’t want to drag her back into all this. Maybe I think she deserves a chance to forget.”
Hermione sighed.
“Daphne’s not made of glass. And maybe you need her as much as she needs you.”
A silence settled over the three, filled only by the fireplace’s crackling and the distant murmur of the pub around them. The kind of silence only old friends could hold — the comfort of not needing to fill the gaps with words.
Harry raised his mug in a brief gesture.
“Thank you. For this. For reminding me that I was… something else, once.”
“You were an emotional disaster who kept saving the world,” said Ron, grinning. “And you still are,” added Hermione with a light laugh.
Harry laughed with them, but the sound didn’t reach his eyes. Ron noticed.
“Have you been sleeping?”
Harry hesitated, then shrugged.
“Enough to stay awake. And that’s been enough.”
“It’s not,” Hermione said, with firm softness. “You need more than that. You need peace — or at least a break from whatever is haunting you.”
Harry leaned back in his chair. His eyes were tired. Ancient.
“Since Meredith Crane, everything feels like… a loop. Like a bad dream that changes faces but not the plot. Every time I get closer to the truth, I feel further from reality. Like my mind is… folding.”
Hermione squeezed his hand again.
“You’re not alone.”
This time, the smile held a little more truth.
“I know. But sometimes I look in the mirror and don’t recognize the person looking back. Like part of me got left somewhere. Somewhere I don’t know how to return to.”
“Maybe because you’re still trying to protect everyone,” Ron said, with a simplicity that hurt more than any analysis.
Harry looked at him.
“I thought that was the right thing. That it made me strong.”
“And maybe it does,” Hermione replied. “But it also separates you. Isolates you. And that, Harry… that’s what you can’t let happen again.”
The silence that followed was different. Heavier. More intimate. But necessary.
Then, with the natural ease of someone who knows another’s heart, Hermione asked:
“Have you thought of reaching out to her?”
Harry didn’t need to ask who she meant.
“Yes,” he said. “Many times. But I always end up with the same question: what if she’s trying to move on?”
“What if she’s waiting for you to come find her?” Ron said, looking at him with disarming sincerity.
Harry looked at them — and for a moment, a brief flicker — he allowed himself to imagine. Another life. One with Sunday lunches at the Burrow, simple letters, afternoons at the Leaky Cauldron that didn’t end in conspiracies.
But he knew.
The call would always pull him back.
“There’s still too much at stake,” he said at last. “But… if I survive all this… I promise I’ll try.”
Hermione gave him a soft smile. Ron raised his mug once again.
“To that. Surviving. And trying.”
Harry clinked his mug against theirs.
“Survive and try.”
The butterbeer went down warm, but the heat that lingered in his chest didn’t come from the drink.
It came from the reminder that he still belonged somewhere.
Even if the world around him kept falling apart.

Night had fallen over London like a thick velvet shroud — heavy and unfathomable. The glow of wizarding streetlamps flickered uncertainly against the wet sidewalks, tinting the ground with a spectral gold. The air was dense, steeped in the scent of rain just passed and damp concrete.
Harry walked in silence. The hood of his coat hid his face, and his hands, buried in his pockets, masked the tension in his fingers. His steps were steady, rhythmic — but his mind, always a step ahead, was already tracing the ground behind him.
He couldn’t say exactly when the feeling began.
Maybe it was the near-imperceptible rustle of a cloak when there was no wind. Or the faint crack of a boot on wet stone — too quiet to be casual. Maybe, simply, instinct — that old intuition that always whispered before danger arrived with a name.
But the certainty was solid.
He was being followed.
Without breaking pace, he slid his fingers inside the coat and gripped his wand tight. He turned suddenly into a narrow side alley, pressing his back to the cold, damp wall. His eyes scanned the empty street behind him.
Nothing.
A spell left his lips like a breath:
“Homenum Revelio.”
Silence.
The air felt like it was holding its breath — still and thick. Even so, beads of sweat began to trickle down his neck. He returned to the main road with measured steps, breath uneven.
“Muffliato,” he muttered. “Protego Totalum.”
The protections rose around him like an invisible dome. Still, the feeling clung to him — something, or someone, was watching. Maybe from afar. Maybe from within the shadow itself.
Nearly twenty minutes passed before he crossed the silent square of Grimmauld Place. No lights in the windows. No sound of footsteps. No muttering from Kreacher at the door — which, in itself, was already an omen.
Harry cast a magical sweep the moment he entered, scanning every room, every floor. Everything indicated he was alone.
Or so he thought.
Only when he removed his coat did he notice it.
In the outer pocket. Folded with clinical precision. A note.
His hand trembled as he pulled it free.
The handwriting was clean, slanted, firm — familiar, but masked. The kind of script belonging to someone used to going unnoticed.
“You’re digging the right grave.
But beware the bones.”
Nothing else.
No signature. No seal. No magical trace.
But none was needed. The note was in his coat. Inside his house.
That was proof enough.
Someone had been there. Someone watching him closely. Someone who knew what he was doing — perhaps better than he did.
Harry ran a hand through his hair, feeling his body react with that familiar surge: a corrosive blend of fear and adrenaline. The kind of energy that comes right before either disaster — or discovery.
He was on the right path. Now, it was undeniable.
But he knew — with that grim certainty of those who have walked the edge — that there are questions one should only ask when ready to bury the dead they’ll dig up.
He stored the note in his desk drawer, sealing it with a charm. Then, he sat before the cold fireplace.
The fire hadn’t been lit — but the heat of the threat remained.
From that moment on, every step would be a risk.
But Harry no longer took steps backward.
