A Path Beyond Survival: Chapter 17 - Roots and Omens
🕑 Added 2025-04-02 11:41:23 +0000 UTCThe morning mist still enveloped the greenhouses of Hogwarts like a white veil, dense and silent. There was something sacred in that silence—the kind of stillness that precedes a revelation or the omen of a storm. The glass of the greenhouses trembled softly under the cold touch of dew, and inside, the air was heavy with the strong scent of earth, moss, and freshly watered leaves.
Harry entered last, his glasses fogged up from the temperature difference, as he adjusted his dragon-hide gloves. His fingers still ached slightly from the Dementor attack days ago, as if the cold that had invaded him that night had rooted itself in his bones. But he did not complain. He could not afford to.
"Good morning, class," greeted Professor Sprout, her disheveled hair already covered by a floral scarf, her eyes twinkling beneath wrinkles of enthusiasm. "Today we will be working with heartwort, a sensitive plant that reacts to the emotional energy of the wizard who cultivates it. No shouting, no impatience. You will need tact, focus... and a certain tenderness."
Harry approached the group he had been assigned to: Neville, who was already handling the pots with an almost reverent delicacy; Hannah, arranging the watering cans in a neat row; and Susan, who remained silent but with a calm, though cautious, expression.
She cast Harry a brief look of acknowledgment, and he returned it with a short nod. The air between them was strange—like a newly rebuilt bridge, sturdy but still with fresh paint.
"You made it just in time," said Neville, offering him a pair of pruning shears with the blade already sterilized. "Sprout wants us to loosen the roots before transferring them to the fertile compost. But we have to be gentle."
Harry nodded, kneeling beside his pot. The soil was warm to the touch. There was something comforting about the scent of that particular plant—an aroma somewhere between mint and cinnamon, enveloping and slightly sweet. He began working with smooth movements, his fingers carefully digging around the base of the sprout, seeking the balance between firmness and gentleness.
"You're good at this," commented Hannah, without sarcasm.
"Maybe plants don't find me as threatening as Snape does," he replied, distracted.
Neville chuckled, and even Susan smiled briefly. For a moment, the atmosphere lightened.
But the moment did not last.
A soft sob cut through the greenhouse’s humid air, like the snap of a branch in a silent forest. Everyone turned toward the left corner of the room, where Lavender was hunched over the workbench, her shoulders shaking.
"Lavender?" Hannah called, concerned. "Are you okay?"
Lavender did not respond immediately. Her eyes were swollen, her makeup smudged, and her fingers clutched an envelope as if it were the last anchor to her sanity.
"My rabbit," she whispered. "Binky... he... he died."
Neville let out a murmured sound of sympathy. Hannah brought a hand to her mouth. Susan, silent, lowered her eyes. And Harry... simply stopped moving.
Lavender looked directly at him, and in her reddened eyes, there was something beyond grief. There was certainty.
"Professor Trelawney said this would happen," she said, her voice thick with emotion but firm. "She predicted that something tragic would happen. A deep sorrow. I didn’t want to believe it. But now..."
She took a step forward, the envelope trembling in her hands.
"She also spoke about you, Harry. She said your aura was shrouded in shadows. That death walked beside you. And now, with what happened to Binky..."
She didn’t finish.
She didn’t need to.
The unspoken words were a scream.
The group fell silent, as if her words had covered the greenhouse with an invisible layer of ice. Neville adjusted his gloves, uncomfortable. Hannah looked away, clearly wishing to be anywhere else.
Susan was the first to react.
"Lavender," she said, with firm gentleness, "I’m very sorry about your rabbit. But you can’t think that just because something sad happened, the whole world is going to collapse. Divination is symbolic, not literal. Even Trelawney said that once."
"You weren’t there when she said it!" Lavender shot back, her words sharpened by fear. "She went into a trance! Her eyes turned white! She spoke in a voice that wasn’t even hers!"
"That doesn’t mean Harry is going to die," Susan replied, now more firmly. "It just means you’re scared. And using that fear as an excuse to spread panic."
Lavender wavered, her lips trembling. For a moment, she looked as if she was about to cry again. But when she saw Harry’s expression—not anger, just exhaustion—she simply turned around and left the greenhouse, her footsteps hard against the stone floor.
The silence that followed was dense, made of damp earth and unspoken truths.
Harry slowly stood up and wiped his hands on his apron. He felt his muscles tense. Not from fear. But from something deeper. Something he recognized with familiarity: foreboding.
"Are you okay?" Neville asked after a long moment.
Harry nodded. "I’ve heard worse."
Susan was still watching him. Her gaze was analytical but not cold—like she was weighing what he felt, trying to decipher it without intruding.
"That wasn’t fair," she said finally.
"She’s grieving," Harry replied. "And scared. People say things when they’re scared."
Susan didn’t answer, but her expression softened.
Harry returned to his work, but his mind was elsewhere. Lavender’s words still echoed in his chest, like the distant beat of a war drum.
First the rabbit. Then you.
He knew death didn’t need omens. It didn’t knock on the door. But still… there was something unsettling about that sequence. That feeling that even when the threat was invisible, it was there. Breathing over his shoulder. Lurking.
As he dug around the heartwort’s roots, he noticed the plant hesitated. The sprouts that had once leaned toward the light now trembled slightly. As if they could sense his emotional state.
He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and forced himself to remember the smell of the earth. The warmth of the greenhouses. Lupin’s voice saying, “You resisted.”
When he opened his eyes, the sprout slowly began to bloom again.
And beside him, Susan let out a soft sigh—almost imperceptible.
"Are you still afraid?" she asked, without looking directly at him.
"I am," Harry replied. "But not of what she said. I’m afraid of not being ready. Of not being able to stop something from happening again… to someone."
Susan didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she reached out and lightly touched the stem of the sprout beside his, guiding it precisely into the new pot.
"Healing begins with recognition," she said, almost as if reciting. "We can only protect what we recognize as vulnerable."
Harry looked at her, surprised. Not by the words themselves, but because it was exactly what Pomfrey had told him two days before. Different words. Same meaning.
"You’ve been reading about Green Magic too?"
"Not as much as you," she said, smiling slightly. "But what you told me… about feeling the other person. About carrying a bit of their pain… I think that stayed with me."
Harry lowered his eyes. A strange feeling of gratitude grew within him. Gratitude for having someone who listened. Who didn’t run at the first sign of darkness.
When they finished with the pots, Professor Sprout passed by and smiled, satisfied.
"Excellent work, Group Five. The roots are nice and loose, and the leaves… ah, yes, they’re opening up. They like you."
Neville beamed, clearly proud. Hannah wiped her hands and stretched. Susan observed the plants as if guarding a secret.
Harry simply stared at the sprout before him. It still trembled slightly, but now for a different reason. As if it were responding to something inside him—not fear, but will.
The will to grow.
The pots were already lined up in their new planters when Professor Sprout dismissed the class with a cheerful gesture.
"Well done, everyone! Good work today. And remember: heartwort grows with patience. Treat it the way you’d like to be treated on bad days."
Some students laughed. Others simply grabbed their bags and left in small groups, speaking in hushed voices. The sky was still overcast, and the late morning light filtered through the clouds in diffused shades of gray and pale yellow, as if the world were caught between day and dream.
Harry slowly removed his gloves, his hands still smelling of earth. Beside him, Susan was carefully folding her apron. Hannah and Neville walked ahead, exchanging comments about the texture of the heartwort’s roots.
For a moment, he considered following them, but Susan’s voice stopped him.
"You don’t have to carry other people’s fear along with your own, you know?"
He turned to look at her. Her expression was calm, but there was something in her eyes—a steadiness he had only seen in a few people. Hermione had it, sometimes. Daphne, more often.
"I know," he replied. "But it’s not easy to ignore. Lavender might be wrong, but… she believes."
Susan nodded, adjusting the strap of her backpack on her shoulder.
"I believed it too, remember? Last year. When everyone thought you were guilty."
Harry looked away but said nothing.
"But I was wrong," she added in a quiet voice. "And part of me is still trying to deal with that."
They walked side by side, leaving the greenhouses and heading toward the castle. The damp stone ground creaked under their shoes. The wind blew lightly but cold, carrying the scent of wet wood and burnt leaves.
"I was angry," Harry admitted at last. "Really angry. But… more than that, I was sad."
Susan stopped walking. So did he.
"Sad?"
Harry took a deep breath. His eyes met hers, and this time, he didn’t look away.
"Because you listened to me. Because, in the middle of everything, you were one of the few people who actually treated me like I was… normal. And then, suddenly, you pulled away. Like I had become a threat."
Susan pressed her lips together, her eyes briefly welling up.
"I was scared, Harry. It was my first year at Hogwarts without my cousin. Everything was new, strange… And when the attacks started, the rumors, the suspicions… I didn’t know what to do. So I made the worst choice. The easiest one."
She took a deep breath, the cold air escaping from her lips in a thin mist.
"But I’m not trying to erase what I did. Just… fix what can still be fixed."
A delicate silence settled between them. Not an uncomfortable one. A silence of crossroads—of possible paths.
Harry lowered his gaze to the trail of wet stones ahead. Then, without a word, he extended his hand between them. Not like someone offering an eternal bond, but like someone inviting another to walk beside them. Slowly. One step at a time.
Susan looked at his hand, surprised, then smiled. A small smile, almost shy. And then she took his hand, gently. Neither of them said anything.
They kept walking—not just side by side now, but together. Their shadows blended on the wet ground, stretching out before them as one.
The North Tower loomed in the distance, its pointed silhouette piercing the gray sky. The castle awaited them—with its secret corridors, its moving staircases, and the mysteries that never seemed to end.
And though Harry still felt the lingering chill of Lavender’s omen, he also felt something else now.
A point of light.
Fragile, perhaps. But present.
Like a root clinging to the earth even when the surface threatens to collapse.
