He didn't even feel like going on a date, even though he was supposed to be saving his harem from collapse. And while he could push through and try it anyway, he knew it wouldn't be a good idea. A girl would immediately notice his foul disposition and then the date would be ruined.
So instead of pushing something doomed for failure, he was wandering across Fuyuki.
At this point night had fallen, something which he had grown to appreciate over the last few days due to obvious reasons. The moon light was comforting and—.
"I'm really not made for stuff like this." He wasn't enjoying this moment of respite at all.
He wanted to fight something. Preferably something that could fight back. Sadly, that pretty much cut off all his options... even the Servants wouldn't be much of a challenge. The only thing he could think of was releasing Tamamo-No-Mae, but that would be dumb even for him.
Which meant he really had no option, but to wonder around...
"Yato!" Or accidentally stumble onto an acquaintance.
He raised an eyebrow. "Yo, Ayako." He hadn't seen the girl in a while...
Now that he thought about it, wasn't she sort of friends with Shinji? That would be awkward. Well, Shiro was also friends with Shinji... And there was also Rin to worry about, who had been unaware of the entire dillema with Sakura.
What a mess.
The girl was scowling. "Don't casually say yo to me! Where have you been!? I haven't seen you in ages!" That was a bit exaggeration, wasn't it? Although he really should have paid more attention to her.
He looked away. "My bad, I've been busy." Life had been hectic, that was for sure. Did he really even have the time to deal with her?
Well, yes. As Rin had once said, as a Campione he technically had all the time in the world. However, that didn't mean he could do everything all at once, which meant she would need to be pushed down in his priority list.
She pouted. "Let me guess, busy with some crazy magical adventures?" Sort of? "Ones you didn't invite me for at that!" What would she even contribute!?
However, her pout quickly disappeared. "So go ahead and actually explain those magical adventures!" Ah, curiosity won over anger huh?
Yato smiled. "I fought a sun goddess recently..." But that smile quickly disappeared. "Well, kind of. And then I got engaged." He hadn't even got to have anal with Tamamo yet!
The world was unfair and cruel even to Campione, wasn't it!?
Her eyes widened. "A sun goddess...!? Is that why its been unbearably hot these past few days!?" She guessed pretty quickly, didn't she?
He nodded. "Yeah. Sorry if it sucked, it was an attacked aimed at me... Since it dealt super effective damage I felt like shit for a couple of days." Ugh, he never wanted to deal with a opponent like that again.
It would be far better to fight someone who just showed up and declared themselves a warrior who sought a worthy challenge or something.
Ayako smiled. "Welp, good job on killing the goddess!" She sure didn't seem to care about murder...
Though that wasn't because she was a psychopath or anything. Ayako was just dealing with this as if it was a movie or a comic book. When the super bad guy got put down, you didn't really complain about it.
Honestly, Yato hadn't even outright said he had killed the divinity. Ayako was just assuming things because that was what she had grown to expect from the media she consumed.
Yato found that strangely cute.
"I didn't kill anybody... I meant when I said I kind of fought her. Now she's just my lover though." Even though she had yet to agree with it!
Ayako's eye twitched. "Of course. I forgot you run on harem protagonist logic." She grinned. "It's a good thing I have yet to be affected by the Yato virus." What was that supposed to mean!?
He was not a virus! Though maybe one day he would get an authority to turn into one!
Ayako put a hand to her chin. "So, is she your new fiancee or whatever?" Oh, right. That.
Yato shook his head. "No, my fiancee is someone who I met during the battle. Due to one reason or another, I offered her a favor and she chose to marry me."
Ayako sputtered. "You really are living a crazy life, aren't you!?" She sighed. "Honestly... Well, congrats, I guess. Though marriage is probably not gonna be anything special to ya huh?" He was definitely gonna end up marrying multiple girls.
Like Rin.
Ugh, she hadn't even gotten a boyfriend yet, and meanwhile there was the possibility of Rin getting married. In her defense, was Rin even old enough to get married!? Weren't things moving perhaps a bit too fast.
Yato waved her off. "Actually, I'm not gonna be getting married with Rin anytime soon. Or anytime at all, really." The mage would look hot on a bridal dress though, he should make her wear one one of these's days.
A smile appeared on Ayako's face. "Oh yeah? Did you guys have a fight and break up?" She was happy that Rin was escaping this toxic harem environment.
That was it. That was totally it. There was no other reason for her happiness.
Hah, suck it Rin!
Yato sighed. "We did fight, but I wouldn't say we broke up." That sounded like a couple who broke up! "It's a pretty big mess, so I've been trying to get everyone back on my side..." Everyone...?
A thought suddenly passed through Ayako's head.
It wasn't something she really should comment on, but she couldn't resist. "Hey, don't tell me you managed to ruin that harem thing you had goin!" That would be hilarious! The dream of every man, and this dumbass managed to ruin it!
Yato pouted. "I didn't ruin anything, we just... split up for a bit." He puffed his chest. "And Skadi, Luvia, Sakura... and maybe Caren have already forgiven me." He technically hadn't gone on a exclusive date with the nun.
Ayako glared at him. "It's crazy how you can shamelessly start naming so many girls. That aside though, how did ya mess up so badly? I figured if these gals were desperate enough to share, they would be desperate enough to accept anything."
She could guess it had something to do with that supposed goddess and maybe this new fiancee, but she couldn't figure out what exactly. It was hard to predict something when it was related to Yato after all, considering the whole supernatural shtick he had.
Yato hummed. "I don't know, should I really reveal something like this...? It's pretty personal."
She shrugged. "Well, we are buddies." Which is why he should teach her super powers! And find her a vampire boyfriend! And many other things! "Also, I'm friends with Rin, so if you don't wanna say anything, I can always talk with her." That was a lie.
She wasn't sure about where Rin lived, and the girl didn't have a phone... But she wasn't lying about being Rin's friend, just about being able to contact her. So surely it was okay?
Yato tilted his head. "That's... fine." Finally, he relented. "It wasn't anything too crazy, I just told them that I wouldn't be marrying them, just my new fiancee." Wow.
She could definitely see where this had started. "Dude... I know you can't marry a bunch of people at the same time, but c'mon, have a little bit more tact." How did he even get a harem with skills like these!? "And why did the new girl get picked first? That's just bullying?"
"Get picked first? What do you mean by that?" Wasn't it obvious? "I think you're confused, so let me elaborate. I'm only marrying her. I don't have any plans of every marrying the rest of my harem, in fact, I'm against it." This...

If he wasn't a real life Goku she would have punched him! "Why!? Were you just playing around with them!?" If he said he didn't want to marry anyone she would have kind of understood.
Marriage just wasn't for everyone, that didn't mean they cared less or whatever... but outright picking one girl and ignoring the rest was just foul! And if he was going to do that, then he should at least break up with the rest!
He sheepishly looked away. "Of course I'm playing around, isn't that what a harem is supposed to be?" He totally misunderstood her. "Though as for the why... it's just wrong for a guy to have more than one wife. Don't you agree?"
She began poking him. "No! I mean... yes, but not for you!" This guy was an idiot. "Legally it's a crime yes, but should at least make an attempt to—."
He waved her off. "Legality isn't a issue. I'm pretty sure I could change or abolish whatever law I wanted. I could totally make marrying multiple people legal." Well, he probably had his limits. He doubted he could legalize murder for example.
Ayako stared at him in silence. Flabbergasted.
Didn't he understand the absurd shit that just came out of his mouth!? Not only was it confusing, because if the law wasn't the issue then what was, but it was also really scary! What the hell did he mean he could change the law!?
She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down...
She failed miserably. "What the heck!? Just marry them then!? Are you stupid or something!?" Yes.
Yato shrugged. They just didn't get it... "Just because something is legal, it doesn't mean it's morally right to do!" Though admittedly he had ignored morality plenty of times in the past.
In fact, during this very day he had murdered two people.
This was different though, because this directly concerned his relationships! He had to be very careful, way more careful than usual. Everybody knew marriage was by far a more important decision than committing murder!
"You're the worst." Ayako could not comprehend this alien that stood in front of her.
She was facing possibly the most difficult challenge a human could face. Ayako was trying to communicate with a Campione without truly understanding what it meant to be one. Naturally she was doomed for failure.
Yato rolled his eyes. "That sentiment seemed to have spread around these days..." Truly no good deed went unpunished. "But I won't let social pressure ruin my... the future of everyone!"
He grinned. "Smoking. Drinking. Using drugs. Marrying multiple women. I refuse to do any of thess, no matter how much my friends may insist they are cool!" And he had his parents to thank for that.
Ayako stepped on his foot. "Go to hell."
"Eh?" He had been looking for a fight, but fighting Ayako would be a bit... Well, at that point he might as well have gone around Fuyuki looking for puppies to kick.
She was glaring at him. "You know, I thought you were the harmless harem protagonist. You know, goes around saying he loves everyone equally, yada yada. You're worse though. I don't even know where to begin describing how bad you are."
She took her foot back. "It's just... can't you see how bad this is!? It's like you're looking in the eyes of your... harem and saying they're less important that this one chick you just met the other day!"
Yato nodded. "Yeah, but they know I don't mean it. Marriage is just a social construct anyways." Then why was he so serious about it!? "And besides, I have been going on dates to pacify them. I'm handling the issue."
She crossed her arms. "It sounds to me like you're putting a small bandage on a fatal wound." Not that she should care at this point.
This whole thing was clearly above her pay grade. Sure, Ayako felt bad for Rin, but she could end this charade at any time. So it was probably the moment for Ayako to withdraw from this conversation and focus on something else.
Harems were lame as hell anyway. The dream of a perverted teenager... the dream of a perverted Shinji! She wanted to talk about something more interesting, like vampire boyfriends...! Ah.
Yato grit his teeth, and tried to defend himself. "Look—."
But she quickly cut him off. "It doesn't matter. Let's change topics..." She put a hand to her chest. "If you have the time to be wondering around the city... teach me magic or something." She didn't even know what he was doing, actually.
And Yato didn't know what she was doing either. Not that he cared.
The answer was naturally that Ayako was roaming around during night in hopes of finding something exciting! And if she found danger instead... That wouldn't happen, Fuyuki was a pretty safe place.
Yato squinted his eyes. "I barely know magic, how would I even—?" He shook his head. "Nevermind. I..." How was he supposed to ask what he was about to ask? It was kind of embarassing...
"What do you mean you barely know magic!? I thought you were super special and all that!?" Had he been lying to her!?
Yato's eye twitched. "I'm a physical fighter okay!?" And his magic lessons were temporarily on hiatus for fairly obvious reasons. "Now let me talk! I... need your help..."
"Hah?"
"Concerning my relationships, I mean. It's clear that you are seeing things that I am not. So even if it's embarassing, I have to ask for your help." A blush appeared on his face. "Feel free to ask for a favor in exchange... just not for my hand in marriage."
Her mind immediately came to an answer. A jokey one. "I want one million dollars." The reason why it was a joke was obvious. She wasn't seeing anything special about his mistakes... because his mistakes were clear for everyone to see!
But to her surprise...
He nonchalantly gave her a thumps up. "Done." One million dollars wasn't even a lot, baby money. He was surprised she asked for money in dollars though! Where was her pride for her country!?
Ayako sputtered. "Just like that!?"
He nodded. "Yeah, I mean... I probably shouldn't say this, but one million dollars isn't a lot." He grinned. "Actually, it's kind of adorable that you think it is."
She started fumbling. "W-well...!" If she knew he was serious, then she would have asked for something bigger! "Whatever! Look, I'm just gonna come out and say it! When you do something like taking only girl as a wife, you're implying the other ones are worse!"
He rolled his eyes. "Yeah, that I get. Duh. But it can't be helped." Maybe he should take his million dollars that he had yet to give back!?
Ayako was basically growling. "It can be helped though...! Just... just marry them all! There you go! That's your easy solution!" It was clear that Yato was about to object, probably with something very stupid.
Which is why she gave him no chance to speak. "And before you say something ridiculous, like this being immoral, what kind of man doesn't do immoral things for the people he loves!?" Lots of them, actually.
At this point however, she was just desperately trying to get through his very thick skull, no matter what she had to say.
Yato's eyes widened. "Um..." That was... a good point, but he had a good counter one. "I'm a Campione though. I don't need to leave my comfort zone for anyone!" The world worked as he wished!
That's why he got a harem in the first place!
"Okay then." Hah? "If you want to be a bad boyfriend, that's up to you to decide. In the end, it doesn't matter how much advice you receive if you are so unwilling to compromise about everything."
He... had nothing to say to that.
Was she just right? Was it about time that he swallowed his ego and accepted the circumstances...!? Was there really no other path outside of marrying all the beautiful girls inside of his harem...!?
He grasped his head. "Damn it...! I need to consult more people before I make a decision!" M-maybe she was just biased.
Who could he consult though? Anyone on his harem was obviously biased...
Three names came to mind. First, Kirei, since priests were wise and stuff. Second, Waver, because mages were wise and stuff. Third, Gilgamesh, because three was a better number than two.
Ayako rolled her eyes. "Ugh, you're just running away again, but do whatever you want." She extended a hand. "Just hand me those million dollars already." She still didn't quite believe he would give it to her.
Yato looked at her like she was an idiot. "You... you do know I don't walk around with a million dollars on my wallet, right?" W-well... "And it's not like I can just transfer a million dollars to your bank account out of nowhere, I will need to contact some people and—."
"I get it, okay! Now stop making me feel like an idiot when you're one!" She was just a bit too excited over money! Which was understandable for a teenage girl who struggled to buy pretty much anything.
He laughed. "Sorry, sorry... Thanks for the help though." First the thing with Laeticia and now this... He really was way too lucky.
"One more thing before I leave though... I don't know how to say this, but..." Ah, it was definitely awkward. "I killed Shinji! My bad, I think you two were friends, right?" Knowing Shinji, there might have been something sinister there.
She waved him off. "Friends, as if..." And then it finally registered. "Wait, what did you just say?"
"I killed Shinji. He was a rapist, so eh." He gave her a peace sign. "Anyways, see ya!"
