Upon receiving such a question, naturally Tobimaru Tsukiji frowned. "Of course we are not getting it on. Are you stupid?" He knew his longtime friend was most likely trying to get a rise out of him...
And he was very much succeeding. You see, maybe it was his face that always looked confrontational, or maybe it was his tone of voice that always sounded bored... in the end the reasons for it didn't really matter, the results were that Hajime Wada naturally pissed people off.
Thankfully these two were friends, so one knew how to pacify the other. "I was just joking. No need to break my ankles."
And like that all hostility left Tobimaru's face. As always, the key to getting in his good side was honesty. That's why if one wished to approach him, they should try to avoid any and all misunderstandings.
It just so happens that Hajime was really good at creating misunderstandings. Really, one could say that he was a social failure... The only step he hadn't taken towards becoming a black sheep yet was committing a crime.
And Tobimaru naturally knew all of that, so he waved his childhood friend off. "It's fine, I shouldn't have snapped at you anyways. It's just that those rumors are getting on my nerves." They were bound to break his will eventually.
Since Tobimaru currently occupies the seat of the vice-president of the legendary School Council his actions were naturally looked at with more suspicion than usual. Normally he would be able to shrug off any rumors of course, he had thick skin...
But this one bothered him quite a bit. Maybe because the transfer student in particular was quite innocent, and getting him involved in the school's gossip party left a bad taste in his mouth.
"Anyways, Sono-G is a weirdo alright. It ain't his fault though, he grew up in a place without any electricity." That was enough to make Hajime gasp.
The bored looking teen wasn't a TV fanatic, a game fanatic or whatever, but even so he couldn't imagine living without electricity... I mean, how the hell did his guy survive so many years without the comfort of a fridge or something!?
After a bit of shock, Hajime regained his composure. "That's pretty nuts... for this guy everything must be alien." He could now see why people were calling him an extraterrestrial, he might as well be one.
"Still, Sono-G? I didn't think you were the type to give someone a nickname, selfish as you are." Hajime almost felt jealous, he had know his friend for quite a few years, and yet he had never received one.
He didn't think much of it until now however. Tobimaru wasn't a affectionate person after all, he was cold and serious all the time, someone who only became friends with you if you had something to give to him.
Really, these two should never have become friends, because Hajime didn't have any interests in giving anything. Nonetheless their fathers knew each other, so a friendship ended up blooming one way or another.
"I agree, I'm not the type to usually do that." Tobimaru never tried hiding his ugly nature, that combined with the fact that his father was the vice-principal had earned him the common nickname of royalty, or your highness, or... you get the idea.
Tobimaru very much liked those nicknames, and that probably didn't help his case. "Sono-G is a unusual guy though, so he merits unusual treatment. If you two ever meet then you will understand what I'm talking about."
There is a decently high chance they wouldn't. Hajime and the transfer student were from different classes after all, their only real link was the vice-president.
That's because Sono-G naturally needed a handler with his unique circumstances and all. Since the president of the School Council was avoiding him, that duty fell onto poor selfish Tobimaru.
Hajime took a cola from the table, after taking a sip from it to quench his thirst, he shrugged. "Why don't you invite him to one of our slacking sessions? That way we could get acquainted." The boy was almost getting excited.
After some time to consider the idea, Tobimaru shaked his head in denial. "Nah, he would probably get angry at us. Well, as angry as Sono-G can get." The transfer student wasn't a lazy person.
And these slacking lessons were the definition of laziness. Tobimaru would abuse his power to call Hajime to the room of the Student Council, and the two would just talk shit for an hour or so.
Since Tobimaru was the son of a very doting vice-principal, nobody dared to speak up against it. Furthermore, Hajime didn't have many friends already, so he could care less if his classmates disliked him because of this.
Still, there is no denying that Hajime had solidified himself as a social pariah. Not only because of his previous stated traits, but also because he wasn't a full-blooded Japanese.
His blond hair and green eyes made that very clear to anyone... Well, as per school rules he had to constantly paint his hair either black or brown. Due to personal preference he usually sported black hair.
Tobimaru clicked his tongue. "But I'll probably find some way of introducing the two of you..." He wondered who would get on each other's nerves first. Either way it would be fun to watch. "After all, you're probably curious about his life in the mountain and all, right?"
Hajime nodded, though he seemed a bit confused. "Yeah, I am, there's no way I wouldn't be." After all, it was natural to be curious about how the transfer student had survived for so long.
Obviously it was possible to survive without electricity and other modern conveniences, Hajime understood that, and humanity existed like that for most of its existence, but... C'mon! This is the modern era!
Hajime continued. "That said, why do I feel like you mean something more when you say that?" Normally the black sheep of Private Misaki High School would not be able to read someone like this, but since he knew Tobimaru for so long he knew his mannerisms like the palm of his hand.
And it was now Tobimaru's turn to be confused. "Isn't it obvious? Sono-G's experience would totally help you achieve your dream, wouldn't it?" Ah, yes... that dream.
Hajime was even more confused now. "Why would..." And then he finally realized. "Ah, I see what you mean. I'm not giving up on electricity though. There is no way I would be able to live-on." Admittedly it would be hard.
You see, his dream was very simple. After graduating from high school... or college... Hajime would amass enough funds and move to the middle of the mountains. After that he would live his life as a hermit who talked with almost no one.
Hajime got easily tired of people... That isn't to say he disliked them, or that he didn't need contact with them, he is very aware that humans are social creatures. It's just that he got tired very quickly when he interacted with people.
Even now, after a short talk with Tobimaru, Hajime wanted nothing more to close himself up in his room for a few days. That's why his dream was the perfect ending for him, he could live alone and occasionally... say once per month visit the people he knew and cared about.
This is why Hajime wasn't particularly bothered about how he essentially had zero bonds with his classmates. Of course, such an attitude ended up making him even more of a social pariah. It was a miracle no one had started bullying this loser yet.
Tobimaru, who was aware of his friend's stupid dream, crossed his arms. "How are you going to get electricity in the mountains?" It's not like Hajime planned on simple living close to the mountains after all, he was truly planning on abandoning civilization.
Hajime looked away. "I'll find away. By that point I'll be rich after all... My plan has more steps than just teleporting to a mountain and living like a caveman." He was city boy, so he couldn't truly cut off his ties with the civilized world.
In that way Hajime was a parasite. He grew up with the resources of his father, who raised him alone, and now he planned to abandon it all. In a way he was far more selfish than Tobimaru could ever be.
And as always, Tobimaru found that annoying. "Your steps can be even more stupid than your goal." At this point the vice-president knew them all by heart.
1. Hajime would finish high school, and then maybe college. He needed to do the first due to the law, and he most likely needed to complete the latter due to the second part of his plan.
2. Hajime would become rich. It wouldn't be easy, he understood that, but he really had no choice. And he would do it fast too, because he wasn't going to move to the mountains in his nineties or whatever. Hajime truly believed he could become rich in his twenties.
3. Hajime would find a beautiful woman and throughly steal her heart... After she could not bear to live without him, he would cut off all contact. Like an ephemeral dream, he would completely disappear, making her wonder if he ever even existed.
4. Mountain life! Peace! Victory!
It goes without saying, but Tobimaru hates each and every one of these steps. "So, let's start with the first one... That's easy enough, I guess. Your grades are great."
Hajime grinned. "At least you admit I'm already succeeding." The boy would definitely graduate at the top of his class.
Some people thought Hajime was a genius even, though the truth was a lot less exciting... He simply had way too much time in his hands. As previously said, he quickly grew tired from human interaction, and so he didn't really leave his house much.
And so he did one of the few things he could do to pass his time, he studied, a lot. Due to this, all of his grades were insanely good, and his teachers all agreed that a bright future was in store for him. As expected of his son they said.
Tobimaru closes one eyes, grimacing. "The problems start with step two and onwards. How the hell are you becoming rich? Everyone can tell the economy is about to crash... And it's not like you have rich parents either."
"The second step relies completely on you getting lucky somehow, and I say somehow because you don't even have a plan. Are you funding a company or something? Winning the lottery?" To that Hajime couldn't say anything.
He really didn't have any plan. His father was a good man who was loved by his community, but he wasn't rich, so Hajime couldn't become rich by leeching off him. He also didn't have any crazy ideas that could change the world and quickly make him money.
Of course, if Hajime was a normal person, he could just tell Tobimaru to fuck off. Dreams were dreams for a reason, they didn't have to make sense, and most were not achievable. That's what made them dreams.
Hajime was not a normal person however, and he would truly consider his life a failure if he failed to achieve his. "I'll... come up with something eventually." So he had no good counterargument.
Tobimaru rolled his eyes. "Make sure to tell me when you do, I'll be waiting." If Hajime didn't come up with something before college ended, the vice-president would mock him for the rest of his life.
"And now let's get to the third step... That's really the most... It's just..." He got up from his chair, knocking it backwards. And then, with decent force he slapped the table. "It's just awful! What the hell is going on in your head!?"
The third step didn't contribute anything, it just seemed as if Hajime wanted to toy and hurt someone for no reason. Even Tobimaru found it messed up.
Hajime took another sip of his beverage. "It's complicated..." That garnered him a scowl from the vice-president.
Tobimaru fixed his chair and sat down again. "If it's complicated, then explain it to me. We have the time after all." The truth is that this conversation had already happened in the past.
And to this step, Hajime had always refused to explain. Today... nothing changed. "Sorry, but I find it hard to explain." He really did.
Hajime wasn't a sadist, he didn't enjoy human suffering in any way, shape or form. He cried when people got hurt, and if he could help someone without putting too much effort, he would typically do it.
So why do it? Why make a step involving around breaking someone?
What he felt towards this step wasn't sadism. It was curiosity.
It all tied back to his mother, the woman Hajime didn't know anything about. She was some otherworldly beauty that had met his father in Europe, and then supposedly the two fell deeply in love.
After some time, she got pregnant with Hajime. Supposedly it was a miracle, and she didn't expect it all.
Hajime's father is a dedicated and responsible man. So once the news reached him, he married her, and the two started living together in Europe... Both were supposedly happy.
Until his mother told his father that she was bored of him, and their son. She then left without any explanation and never came back. Just like that.
The truth is that Hajime was never even supposed to learn this story, but his father got drunk two years ago, and let it slip it out. After it, a curiosity... a wish to understand his mother was born in Hajime.
And so a new step of his plan was born. He didn't know how to arculate this however, it was more instinct than anything else. "When I pull it off though... I'll at least leave something for her. Like money or whatever." He wouldn't.
It would ruin all meaning if he did. His own mother only left burdens behind, and if Hajime wished to understand her, he had to take the same steps. Nonetheless, he wanted Tobimaru to stop scowling already.
But since Tobimaru wasn't stupid, he still found this messed up. "Whatever. It's not like you're getting a girlfriend anytime soon anyways." That much was true, Hajime was a social pariah after all.
However... "I can totally get a girlfriend. I just haven't started working towards that because it's too soon." It was the third step for a reason. Once the time came, Hajime would swallow his distaste for interaction, and seduce a woman.
Tobimaru snorted. "Right... You know, social skills are something you're supposed to cultivate through years of effort. You have not put any effort at all... Can you even talk with a woman without trembling?"
A blush appeared on Hajime's face. "Of course I can! Do I look like a creep to you?" Since his plan was seducing a woman, and then breaking her spirit, Tobimaru's answer was very much yes.
He kept that to himself however, for he had a plan. "Well... maybe under normal circumstances you could. There's no denying you're super handsome." He didn't feel emasculated for saying that, it was just a fact of life.
The sun was hot, Aoko Aozaki will one day kill someone out of uncontrolled rage, and Hajime Wada was beautiful, hauntingly beautiful, almost as if he was a fairytale vampire. It must have come from his mother, because his father had average looks, below average even.
"But being handsome isn't everything. In fact your... achievements are impressive specially because you're handsome." His tone was dripping with sarcasm.
Hajime pouted, such a sight would be enough to capture the heart of even the dead. "What are you trying to say?" The fact that his relationship status might as well be dead, one could guess.
Tobimaru snorted. "I'm saying you're so rotten, even your good looks aren't enough to get you a girlfriend. It's sort of pathetic, really. Like seeing everyone drop a diamond on the ground, because it stinks." This wasn't just a theory constructed by the vice-president either.
He had proof, he had seen it happen.
Last year, Aoko Aozaki had joined Private Misaki High School, and had captured the hearts of a hundred students. She even had a stalker, who she had to kick in the face.
This was the most well known romance story in Private Misaki High School, because it had an explosive finish... However, there was another one, one that was silent and dark, sad and pathetic.
When Hajime Wada joined the school, he immediately became an idol. It was probably due to a combination of his insanely good looks, good grades, and even his aloof personality not seeing too bad from afar. It also helped that his father had been popular in his age, and Hajime ended up inheriting some of that popularity.
Hajime Wada stole everyone's hearts just by existing, even the fierce Aoko Aozaki would sputter when near him... And then he lost it all. How you may ask? Just by being himself.
There was no great event, people just started talking with him, and realized they didn't want the torture of dating such a man.
That's right, he fumbled the bag... And not just one bag, a entire school worth of bags. So for Tobimaru, Hajime finding a girlfriend was impossible.
Hajime wasn't completely unaware of what he had accidentally done however. So he simply gritted his teeth and denied his friend. "S-shut up, I'll prove you wrong one day." Yes, Hajime Wada didn't even know he had once fumbled the bag.
That was probably a good thing, because he would have most likely taken his own life if he knew. As it was expected of a teenager.
For a moment, Tobimaru simply laughed at his friend. Laughing at Hajime's pain was a good thing after all, and most of the school would agree that he deserved such treatment.
And then Tobimaru had an idea. A devious idea. "Why don't you prove me wrong right now?" This would be amazing. At least if Hajime was foolish enough to take the bait.
And he was, of course. "What do you mean? Because I'm totally willing to do it."
The vice-president was giggling to himself just by thinking about it. "Just find a girlfriend, as soon as possible. Then I'll have to eat my words."
Hajime looked away. "It's the third step. I don't want to..." I don't want to get too attached, so the relationship needs to be the last thing I do. That way it will be easy to break it off. Those were Hajime's thoughts. "It's the third step, okay?" And he didn't have the courage to say those thoughts outloud.
Tobimaru didn't bother arguing, he just nodded. "Sure, that's fine. This doesn't need to be that legendary relationship though, people have multiple relationships throughout their life after all." Only in movies would someone only date one person their entire life.
But Hajime was actually a romantic, surprisingly enough. "No, I want it to be my first relationship if possible." He didn't mind if the girl had previous partners, but she had to be his first.
To such logic... Tobimaru could only say one thing. "Sounds to me like you can't pull it off." He was slowly breaking Hajime's walls. "I mean, you don't even need to date this girl. Just get her to go out with you for one date or something."
The truth is that Tobimaru didn't just wish to laugh at this friend's pain and embarrassment, though he would gladly do that. In his mind, maybe if Hajime went out with someone he could change for the better.
Basically, convincing his friend was a win-win. Either he got a good laugh out of this, or he could finally stop worrying about his loser childhood friend.
Hajime looked down, staring at the table. "That's..." And then his gaze shifted towards the ceiling. "I can definitely pull it off. Yeah. I'll ask one girl out, and when she says yes I'll tell her it was just a prank."
This way he could keep both his stupid pride and his stupid romanticism.
Tobimaru smiled. It was full of evil. "That's what I like to hear! I'll give you a time limit though, or else you're just gonna stall until the Sun explodes." His plan was going well. "Let's say... you have one month. Use it well." That should be enough.
However, Hajime thought that was more than he needed. "Screw waiting a month. I'll make the next girl I see into my girlfriend." Soon Hajime would learn that pride comes before the fall.
But for now he was safe. "Okay, sure, suit yourself." Tobimaru predicted a disaster of epic proportions. "Anyways, about the last step... You already know why it's stupid." Tobimaru had needled this step countless times in the past.
The discussion about Hajime's dream was over. The two ended up changing topic, conversing casually about needless things as they usually did.
That lasted until they heard footsteps coming their way.
Tobimaru clicked his tongue. "Tch. I guess our fun time ends here." If someone was coming, then he would need to kick Hajime out. It was a shame, but the latter really needed to return to class already.
Hajime got up from his chair without complaints. "It was fun while it lasted." But the time for fun was over. He had a mission after all, a mission that would forever prove Tobimaru wrong.
However, both of them didn't realize the apocalypse was coming.
The footsteps got as close as possible. The door to the room was opened, and through it, entered the legendary Student Council President, Aoko Aozaki.
For a second she glanced at Hajime with a glare, but soon after it that glare shifted towards Tobimaru. "Yo. That guy needs your help again. Go check on him."
Hajime immediately felt nervous at her presence. They had stumbled on each other occasionally, since he came here so often, but they had never bothered to talk. They simply ignored the other's existence.
Why? Probably because they were incompatible. Since Hajime was awful at social interaction, he liked simple people, he was simple himself. If you treat him nicely, he will like you, if you treat him badly, he will dislike you.
Aoko Aozaki however was a hurricane of confusing emotions. She could fall in love with her murderer, and she could hate her savior. For Hajime Wada she was a headache he never wanted to speak with.
Tobimaru sighed. "That guy... you mean Sono-G...?" Aoko would typically throw that problem at the vice-president for some reason. "Sure, I can go talk with-." He suddenly chocked on his own spit as a shock ran through his body.
It took him sometime to realize... probably because most of the time he even forgot Aoko was a girl at all, but... she wasn't. Aoko Aozaki was a woman. Which naturally means his friend should...
A shudder of terror ran through Tobimaru. Perhaps he should let his friend pull back just this once.
Hajime was the first to notice his mental state. "You okay, man? You're looking pretty pa-." The bond between these two is truly strong.
Just one look was enough for Hajime to understand the situation... And so he naturally became pale too. He was not ready for this, not a single male human being on the planet was ready for this.
Both Hajime and Tobimaru slowly began looking at Aoko. Right now their stares were filled with the emotions of despair, as if they were a soldier staring down the barrel of a rifle.
Aoko scowled. She did that a lot. "What? Is there something on my face." She didn't like these two, not one bit.
Tobimaru was Tobimaru. That's all the explanation she needed to give to justify her dislike of the vice-president.
Hajime was Hajime. That's all the explanation she needed to give to justify her dislike of the cocky aloof bastard.
Maybe Aoko was simpler than she appeared to be.
Hajime took a deep breath. "Well, you see... the thing is..." He was slowly building the courage to ask her out. He wouldn't back down even in the face of a demon.
Aoko put her hands on her hips. "Spit it out already. I don't have time for a slacker." For such a hard working woman, a guy who skipped classes was the devil himself.
Hajime could only look away, scared of the abyss. "I just wanted to say that today you look really c... cu..." Cute. Though Aoko looked beautiful any day of the week.
If Hajime was undisputedly the most beautiful guy in Private Misaki High School, then Aoko was the most beautiful girl. She even went through a similar experience to him in their first year after all.
She didn't fumble any bags however, she tore them open with an annoyed frown.
Tobimaru, upon seeing this disaster, ended up closing his eyes. "He's actually going for it...!?" Out of solidarity, he would pay for his friend's hospital bills.
Aoko was looking at Hajime like was living scum. Which he was. "Going for what? Stop wasting my time." She was a bit surprised to be honest, since Hajime usually never talked to her.
Hajime took another deep breath. "I'm going for it...!" He lost. "Sorry, I gotta go!" With surprising speed the boy ran away from the room, leaving a surprised Aoko behind.
A pathetic display, but just this once Tobimaru would cut him some slack. Facing a demon was just too much for a newbie after all.

"I can't believe Tobimaru was right..." He couldn't help, but mutter to himself as he walked through the streets of Misaki.
In the end his childhood friend was completely correct. Due to his way of life, Hajime didn't have the necessary attributes to talk with a woman, much less completely seduce one. So in the end he embarrassed himself.
That was a few hours ago however, and now Hajime was aimlessly roaming around at night, hoping to clear his head.
Misaki Town was a interesting place, mostly because it was so uninteresting, quite a interesting contradiction. It was a place that had gone through many changes in the recent years, in hope of reaching modernity.
Money eventually ran out however, and so the city reached a state where one could comfortably live-in, but that wasn't anything special. A couple steps behind Tokyo, a couple of steps ahead of some random village in the mountains.
The city was quiet this time of the night, specially around the residential district. Hajime appreciated that, because he had a feeling a noisy place like Tokyo would drive him insane.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
He passed through a dark alleyway, immediately a strange smell hit nose. It was enough to put a pause to his walking.
If he had just kept walking, everything would have turned out okay. Hajime Wada however, was a person filled with curiosity. The cat took a few steps back.
And entered upon the alleyway.
It was too dark to see for a few seconds, but soon his vision adjusted.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
In there there was a beautiful woman. Clearly a foreigner of some kind, her pink hair was as unnatural as it was beautiful. And even though she looked as old as his oldest teachers, her face was flawless, devoid of any wrinkles.
Not that this mattered, what mattered was the corpse in her hands. The corpse she was sucking the blood of.
Drip. Drip. Drip. The blood fell upon the ground.
A vampire. "Ah." Hajime didn't know how to react, but he knew what the mystical creature was. There was no way he could mistake her for anything else.
Like a startled animal, the woman dropped the corpse and looked at him. No words were said, but Hajime immediately understood his predicament.
He turned around to run and then...!
The woman appeared behind him with unbelievable speed, grabbed his neck and bit on it. The end. Hajime Wada barely felt anything.

It couldn't truly be called a living being. It was empty, the only thing it had were its master's orders, and those orders were simple.
"Go collect some blood, avoid the church."
It would do as she asked, because it couldn't do anything else. Whatever remained in this corpse was long gone.
It walked a bit around the streets of Misaki, looking for fresh prey and then suddenly... It felt itself burning from the insides.

It became a bit more, and a bit less at the same time. It couldn't think, but it could feel. It had to feel, it was nothing, but feelings.
His insides, from his brain to his heart had all melted away after all. Perhaps the only thing left of Hajime Wada was his soul, and even that had been tainted with the Moon's curse.
It stalked the alleyways, desperate for blood, desperate for warmth... It felt oh so cold, and it felt oh so thirsty. No longer did the dead man hunt due to orders...
It hunted due to instinct. It needed to hunt. But before he could find any meat, he felt himself remembering...

That his name was Hajime Wada. That he had a stupid dream... a cool dream that some stupid people called stupid. But he had wandered across an alleyway and paid the price for it.
It would have been better if he had found a common murderer, but no he found a vampire instead. And now he didn't even know what was happening.
He felt no pain. He felt nothing really. It all felt like a dream which he would never wake up from.
The sky was spinning, the streets were spinning, everything was spinning. Everything was hazy. Everything was a blurry. It made him want to throw up. Perhaps this was less due to a dream, and more due to a nightmare.
Eventually however, as the hours passed, he woke up.

Immediately he put his hands on his neck and screamed. "W-what's happening...!?" It really felt like suddenly waking up from a dream, like everything had just coming crashing down on him at once.
His breathing was erratic. "I... I... I...!" He was shivering, the extreme cold from before was even worse than before. It felt like he was walking naked during winter, and hugging himself didn't help at all.
That wasn't the only problem either, his mouth was dry, he was parched. Before, when he was... dreaming it wasn't such a problem. Now however, he couldn't ignore it. And he knew exactly what he needed.
He had watched enough movies to understand what was happening. "What do I do now...?" If a human gets bit by a vampire, and survives, that can only mean he has become a vampire as well.
He couldn't hold it in anymore, he vomited.
And as he did so, he began feeling strangely better. It was like he was pushing sickness... panic itself out of his body. He was still cold, and he was still thirsty, and it was all still overwhelming, but...
"At least I can still vomit."
That's right, even as a vampire... assuming he really was one, he had survived. This sucked for sure, but hey, it was better than death, right?
He looked around. "This isn't where I..." Got turned? Died? "I... I guess I need to find my way home." He didn't know where he was, but Misaki City wasn't a huge place anyways.
He looked to the skies. "And I should probably move fast..." The night was beginning to end, and going by the myths he knew that the Sun would spell out his end.
How would he live his life like this? How would he explain this to his father, who was undoubtedly sick with worry? He didn't know. He was just glad he was alive.
And so he returned home, unaware that he had evolved through four ranks in one measly night. He didn't even know these ranks existed in the first place after all.
Nonetheless, without a doubt this was a monstrous feat, a impossible feat. A monster of the night now lived in Misaki.
And he would grow faster than anyone could imagine.
