"Every cycle, the five weakest performers face challenge. This cycle, those five are the Crimson Scale Consortium, Whiteshore Traders, Evernight Exchange, Dusk Caravan, and Saffron House." => face a Challenge / face challengers / face off all challengers

Samantha Lane

"House Sylla." She repeated the name. "I wasn't aware the Syllas* had commercial interests." => Sylla's

Noah

If I were him I would say his Dad found a stash of Dungeon Gold or something. That way his partners wouldn’t want to cross him for fear of his dad’s retaliation. That should be a realistic threat, seeing as his Dad personally sieged this very city a few months ago over his son’s safety. He can probably trust Cass, but he should only tell her the “real” secrets in a secure location after he’s known her for longer. Also once she’s more financially bound to his enterprise.

Josh Cothran

Idk, seems to me if he’s going to trust her he can at least tell her he has a mountain of gold and show it to her lol

guipe

No leverage? She has the most important leverage someone can have : Trust

Andrew Wells

She's also basically going to run it. And you want the person who runs it to have a personal stake in whether or not the business does well.

I did like it - the set up is well paced and written - I am looking forward to her reaction when she does discover the extent of his wealth - but the merchant guild is a great method to get that money into circulation and use - as if it were to come out that single person (not to mention a 13 year old) suddenly having that amount of portable wealth would paint a huge target on his back for people trying to take it from him. This way - it moves into banks and investments with her being the face of it. Can't wait for the next chapters.

All the politics and mercantilism is interesting. I don't think the percentages are terrible considering that Cass is putting in all the actual work as well as setting herself in the position to be a priority target. Especially considering, as far as she knows, she's going in on behalf of a 13 year old boy. If anything I'd say it's more like Cass' venture with Sylas as an investor/silent partner.

I was thinking the exact same thing. She has 0 leverage, up to 5% equity would be considered extremely generous.

Scion

I do think from my personal knowledge of business that 7% is a bit high considering he is paying for it

Rick

Since the chapter is meant to be a preliminary discussion with Cass, not everything important can be covered; but I think it served its purpose in an entertaining way. Obviously, Adom doesn't need money: He needs an information network, and I wonder if he'll just be milking the merchants for information or pepper their ranks with actual spies! One big issue, "House Sylla" is supposed to be backing the new guild: Do Adom's parents know this and give permission? Will people even believe the Syllas have enough money to start a guild? Will Adom be putting a target on his parents' backs (not to mention his own)? And I love how this chapter has delayed his inevitable confrontation with Sam!

I'm a little confused how Cass has any leverage. She's bringing in no capital, but is asking for equity and performance-based equity at pretty high levels. 7 + 12 percent equity seems just way too high.

Thank you

I think this chapter was engaging because the politics were easy to follow and the violent undertones kept it exciting. Id like to see more of Adom struggling to keep his newfound strength in check though. I think that would be a laugh

John Koor

I liked it. I'm excited to see the interactions between these two as she starts up the company. I was wondering how he'd handle showing her the hoard of treasure and expected a magical NDA with much drama. Makes sense he's not revealing it and just saying it's family money, though a bit disappointing. They'll definitely need to hire on staff and protection, which should have been mentioned as well, as you'd need to spend time looking for those of good quality.

BenjiVoid

Honesty, I love Zuni, but I'd be happy cutting half his time in this chapter for more politics, economics, and planning. Showing her the capital (either numbers or gold pile), mentioning defenses against sabotage (hiring his underground friends?), mentioning some info he has about opportunities (the stuff he mentioned about resources being discovered?).

Hey everyone, First off, I'm really sorry about the recent lack of updates. Life happened, as it tends to do, and then to make matters worse, my cloud storage reached its limit and didn't save some of the chapters I had. I didn't notice until it was too late that they never actually uploaded. *facepalm* Anyway, I've been frantically rewriting everything from scratch, which took longer than expected and hopefully still good quality wise, as I tried to write as fast as possible, but still took a few days. The good news is I'm back on track now! You'll get another chapter later TODAY, and then TWO MORE chapters tomorrow to make up for the delay. Quick question for you all - I'd love some feedback on the pacing of this chapter. It's essentially just Adom and Cass talking in the park, setting up the merchant guild plot. I'm a bit worried it might read as boring economic/political exposition rather than engaging story progression. Did the Zuni moments and character dynamics keep it interesting, or should I be mixing in more action with these setup scenes? Sleyca seems to have a way with that on SS that I always admired, but she's kind of an outlier... As always, your comments and support keep me going! -ME
