I just re-read the edited chapter. This felt way better than the previous version. Great job, ace! Two things that stood out though: there are 3 mentions of the fourth crystal that feel disjointed. It felt like saying the crystal was just destroyed three times at different times. The other that after using the hatch and the fight moving above ground, the intervention by maria & co still happens in the corridor instead of above ground. Great work overall! The golem now felt appropriately strong, making it a wave of specters instead of just 6 feels like the power scaling is better, and Vex being there, with a team that is fighting above ground (i only reread family time and this chapter, so i didnt see the new start of the conflict) makes it feel so much better.

@Ace_the_owl In the trials you showed him leading soldiers (when is mother died), so I just assumed he was also in the army and able to lead soldiers effectively.

Ace_the_owl

Those are good points. I'll be changing those few plot points in the edits in the coming days. Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it!

Jason Chang

I think you're missing the point. What we expect is not perfect composure under pressure in fast-moving high stakes situations. What we do expect is wisdom, not just knowledge. We expect him, as someone who has lived a life through an apocalyptic world already, and who understands the nature of his own position, to have forethought in his actions, and to be risk-averse where he can be. If he dies, the world takes roughly the same route as his last life: he should be trying to avoid his death at all costs. That wyvern heart? It should've been something he asked his father, who certainly has the resources to arrange for the killing of a wyvern, given what we now know about star knights (and which he certainly knew since the start of the story). He should never be solo infiltrating an enemy position to rescue the professor. He should not be in a position where he has the might of the iron wolves behind him, and does not leverage it. He should be playing his cards right on the large scale, which minimally means he shouldn't be putting himself in danger without a good justification. This professor rescuing operation should have involved a full squadron of star knights to crush all resistance. This should have been obvious to his father who is supposed to be a commander, that you don't match an enemy star knight with one star knight if you want to guarantee success. It should have been obvious to him if his father somehow missed it. Panic is acceptable, naivety and lack of planning is not. It's acceptable for things to go wrong, but not because he didn't prepare properly. It's precisely in this phase where he hasn't come into his own power yet, where his best way to gain agency in the story is to be orchestrating events in his favor. If you want to force him to take risks, make sure he has less to work with.

I'd genuinely be interested on your thoughts on what could have been done better Max, and why it was a letdown. If you don't mind, of course. Just editing the chapter, and if it's possible to enhance it, then I'll definitely do it

Simon Hoerder

The reduction in power level and the more theoretic background of Adom's live were quite clear to me. I am a bit surprised that his parents didn't help more with the final planning, seem to be quite impulsive themselves (an experienced commander threatening a revolution without a good plan out?) and haven't put contingencies in place for situations like "can't reach the headmaster".

Simon Hoerder

I'm a little surprised how many star knights they've been able to slip into the city anyway despite the guards at full attention. Gale I can see as he's had his ways in for a long time. Adom's parents and a few other iron wolves? Either special infiltrator skills, smuggler connections from their pre-iron-wolf past or both. That's sort of what I figured between the lines. But if it was easy to access for all iron wolves they wouldn't have needed to camp outside the walls and the city would have a bigger and more fundamental security issue.

Thanks for the explanation! I get it, sort of. In my head, I realize a slow burn usually leads to a satisfying climax, but I really enjoy the fantasy of a lead character holding a nearly unbeatable trump card right from the get go. Actually, from a realism point of view, it feels like Adom gets away with a lot of things no sane adult would let a 12 year old do in our world, but which might be normal for a magic student in the storyverse. Still, cold blooded murder from someone at that age ought to have been ringing horror bells for bystanders lol, unless child soldiers/young killers are somewhat common and/or socially accepted. Also, thanks for the Adom lore summary. The rune magic researcher bit came through, but I also thought he had a lot of experience with pure magic combat— especially cause he is so okay with dealing death.

BenjiVoid

I think you're doing a decent job already, though improvements are improvements. I do think the system seems to be much more of an influence on his power level than a reflection of it as it claimed earlier. Also "boxing mastery" seems to be a massive overstatement of skill for a 12yo with a couple weeks experience.

BenjiVoid

The second part about the emperor was more of a comment than a criticism. I was just thinking about where the story could escalate to. Especially after gale said someone higher than the prince was involved. The options for escalation are either the emperor himself (unlikely based on what we knew before this chapter) or a foreign power. Though I did realise, I think the assassin being able to (almost) kill gale so quickly, but a group of them struggling with the students might need more explanation. I chalked it up to surprise and him already struggling really hard with his fight+injuries. But could use something more explicit imo. I'm very excited for how this concludes.

Ace_the_owl

Coming right up! lol

Ace_the_owl

Thank you! hopefully, it'll head the right way, almost done with the editing, and writing of the new epilogue, and then, book 2 will start, too

Ace_the_owl

Haha, yeah, there are plot reasons indeed, but they also did not expect gale to be a two star hence not needing more than one elite knight, which, now that I think about it, is also plot related, lol. I might have to come up with a more logical explanation to this one.

Ace_the_owl

Thanks for reading, Gopard!

Ace_the_owl

Ah, my bad, this was originally in the first version, and the logical inconsistencies slipped here. I'll correct that as soon as I deal with that other plot hole about the crystals. > Also, we don't know about the emperor (king? I don't remember), but the one thing other than him that would have been higher than the prince is foreign interference and treachery, which we got. Oh, right, I am planning of having the emperor show up in book 2, but yeah, some questions will be answered in the next chapter I am editing

Ace_the_owl

Oh yeah, according to google, a normal human body takes about a week to heal small cuts, 2-3 weeks for deeper cuts needing stitches, and 6-8 weeks for broken bones. So with healing that's 5 times faster, Adom would heal small cuts in about a day or so, deeper cuts in 3-4 days, and broken bones in about 1.5-2 weeks. It's definitely better than normal human healing, but not anything close to superhuman regeneration lol, but he'll get there. Also, Doom? I see that you're a man of culture Michael

Ace_the_owl

Hmm, I think I understood what you mean. While most regressor stories show that past-life experience dominating right away, I kind of wanted to explore something more grounded. I like to think of it this way: if you were suddenly thrown back as a 12-year-old, tasked with preventing WW2 and all that entails. Even with all your future knowledge, you'd be dealing with adults who won't always take you seriously, physical limitations of a child's body, and the crushing pressure of knowing what's coming. Now add in that most people around you have lived for centuries and possess overwhelming power. And now, mutliply the WW2 scenario by, let's say, 10? 20? And you've got Adom's situation. Looking back, this is largely my fault for not emphasizing enough who Adom really was in his past life. While yes, he was a Circle Mage, his true task and daily life revolved around research and experimentation. He wasn't the battle-hardened warrior leading armies - he was the guy buried in ancient texts, conducting experiments, trying to understand the fundamental nature of magic and apply it to help in the wars and battles. Now he's lost even that power(Circle mage), starting completely from scratch, and having to learn combat arts for the first time. About his impulsiveness - i believe it would be weak storytelling to just blame it all on teenage hormones, so I won't. But even at 79, with a timer hanging over your head and everything you built stripped away, staying perfectly composed isn't always realistic. I get that the primary draw of these stories is escaping reality, watching heroes face impossible odds and triumph. This story aims to be that too, but I want to build up to it in a way that feels earned. It's going to be a long journey, watching Adom build himself up brick by brick, from a researcher forced into a warrior's path to someone who can actually change history. I want that transformation to feel satisfying without relying on convenient power-ups or deus ex machina moments that make you roll your eyes. Which... is a bold statement I might regret later as I'll probably stumble along the way - writing is always a learning process. But I'm more than happy to get feedback when things don't work and correct course. I want this story to be enjoyable for as many readers as possible. Whew, that was a long text! Reminds me I really need to finish setting up that Discord channel so we can have more discussions like this. Your point is completely valid, btw, and I understand where you're coming from. I'd say the Adom you're looking for will come - it's just that this story was always planned as a slow burn.

Ace_the_owl

Wow, okay, this is a huge plot hole we got here. In the original version the crystals were used, but with my late-night edits, I removed that part but forgot to explain why. I'll be editing before bed to correct this ASAP. Thank you for catching this!

Max R

yeah so many things could have been done smarter. disaster of a plan and a letdown.

Aaron Johnson

I have to ask why after fixing or replacing (as suggested by sam bringing him the main cristal) the teleportion cristals does he not use them to bring his allies to him or to get the professor out?

ImBaroqe

I am kind of let down with the direction the story is taking. If Adom was just a mature and smart teenager, his actions and power level would make sense. However, he is in fact a returner of considerable (archmage) level, and has faced constant war, leading people over a rich lifetime. He can’t be as impulsive and reactive as depicted here. Really feels more like a teenager than anything else, not an old man, not a powerful person.

Michael

Marvelous, was listening to the Doom OST. I'm assuming that 5x healing factor is not yet wolverine/deadpool levels and not on the level of Helios's orginal healing, but where would that be? 100x, 1000x, 1e100x?

BenjiVoid

> Around them, faces peered from dormitory windows. Students in nightclothes gathered at the corridors How is the "after the barriers, minutes into breaking it, far enough that guards caught them" in the middle of dormitoriums? Like, students are closer to the meeting than they let students get? Also, we don't know about the emperor (king? I don't remember), but the one thing other than him that would have been higher than the prince is foreign interference and treachery, which we got.

Gopard

Thanks for the chapter! Mom comes to the rescue nice!

Gopard

I personally liked it a lot. I also really liked that the Magisterium got involved to solve the problem at last. Because it seemed that the plan was a bit too full of hopes to still succeed without some other assistance...

Hellnhavoc

Enjoyed this. Look forward to seeing where we go

Maze

There is something to that as well, yeah

Patrick Blatti

That has something. But I like this better than if he did it all by himself. Despite beeing a regressor he's neither all powerfull nor all knowing. He's in fact still pretty weak. For me it would feel like plot armor if he didn't need the help.

Chaz Baz

Liked the end of the chapter. But why send only one heavy hitter to help Adom? A team of starmages would have been smarter. Ahhh needs of the plot!

Broseph

Can't wait for the next one! I need it, to wind down.

Broseph

What a rush, right?

Maze

I'm a bit conflicted. On one hand, this resolution is good, and what would hopefully happen with some level headed thinking. On the other, this feels a little like deus ex magica. Both conflicts were not overcomable by Adom personally, but were resolved by his parents, teachers, bob and the archmage stepping in. For all his planning and being a regressor, he did not feel like the MC in this sequence, but rather the damsel in destress.

Simon Hoerder

The only thing that is missing is the POV switch where the Crown Prince hears that his spectres are dead, that the civil war has been averted and that Gale is talking.

Mike L

Love this arc

Simon Hoerder

I think it is good the way it was done. Not sure what people have against POV switches, they add perspectives. And I have no clue how this early morning could have been reasonably unraveled without POV switches.

Tynga Kpandang

Personally I loved it, so thank you

Max R

Confusing and anti climactic, but I’m still in love with the series.

Jason Petry

Phenomenal chapter.

Ace_the_owl

I know a lot of people do not like POV switches, which is why the original version of 17k was purely in Adom's POV and mostly fights after fights after fights. Which, to be honest, I did not enjoy reading much. I hope this method gave more context to what was happening, and why so far. Of course, a lot of things will be explained in the next chapter, but this was the most important, and hardest chapter i had to write. So i hope it is enjoyable. It was initially 17k, but I think we might be up to 20k with all the four parts put together lol
