This plunges us into a rather complex discussion about what death is, what consciousness is, and whether a soul exists, and where exactly is consciousness imprinted? I believe there's no such thing as a soul, while consciousness is something like a data file; it can be imprinted in a data medium such as a mana crystal, or in a brain (in the sense of a biological computer), or some other construct capable of processing data. Death should be understood as a state in which the brain loses the ability to write and read data. Plus, there's the system, which most likely cuts off its support for the entity when it deems its consciousness permanently incapable of functioning (just a reminder, statistics, etc., are constructs imprinted on the body by the system, but they don't require the system to function). Two important things: death doesn't involve the destruction of the consciousness data file, and having consciousness doesn't involve being recognized by the system and supported by statistics, skills, traits, etc. Recall the case of Brich (I hope I didn't misspell that name; it's about a guy who kept backups of his consciousness and, if necessary, regenerated his brain and uploaded the data back) and how Lis made an imprint of his consciousness on a brooch and in Hadwin's hand. Moving on to our demon case: his heart was ripped out, and his body, including his brain, lost its ability to function, but his body was strong enough to resist the effects of decay, and the consciousness file was preserved in his brain. And while Sophie & Co. began tinkering with the body, they activated the brain, awakening the consciousness contained within.
