🕑 Added 2018-05-21 19:23:07 +0000 UTC After turning in my thesis, I spent this week in New York to attend a design writing fellowship. I'm extremely excited to begin writing full time which hasn't even been a thing the entire time the blog has existed, as I started it when I first began grad school. I want to thank you all so much for your patience during these stressful last few months. Your continued support really means so much to me. As the blog enters its 3rd year, I'm excited to present some new ideas to my patrons to get your input before I roll them out. First, I want to use the blog as a curation space for the next generation of design writers. My idea for this is to have a regular competition open to high school age design writers where the winner is featured on the blog and wins a small cash prize ($250). It would be shitty of me to sit here and have all this viral clout and not offer the same opportunity to young people just getting started or are interested in writing about architecture and design. Second, after the 50 States ends, I want to find a fun way of selecting new McMansions to be featured on the blog. If anyone has any ideas, let me know! Third, since I will be writing McMansion Hell full time now, I plan to reconfigure the Patreon rewards to pivot to wholly digital content, including Good House of the Week, regular Crowdcast live sessions, and bonus roasts and essays taking on new subjects like celebrity houses, architectural theory, and houses in film and literature. Kate, first, thanks for keeping this blog going. I've learned an enormous amount about architecture from you, and you've given me some good laughs which we desperately need in these dark times. How about featuring a "worst of" McMansion for each particular feature? Most egregious nubs, most horrible mismatched windows, most obviously pasted-on trim, etc.
I think McMansions across the globe could be fun, and a good gauge or the impact US culture has on architecture globally...
