Hopefully between cloning and reforestation efforts, humanity will manage to repopulate the animal populations of Wriss eventually so that they’ll be able to hunt on their planet again. Course I doubt they’ll start those efforts any time soon considering especially at the point this is happening, they’re playing apologists to every ex-Fed alive while blaming them for themselves not trying harder. No way they’d be willing to risk some bad blood to restart the dead ecosystem that is Wriss

Aerowarrier

I mean Raza, he does come from one of the hyper-capitalist races. That’s like the definition of a predator, so it makes sense that they would still have a lot of those tendencies and skills within them. I still have no idea why the Feds would’ve let a system like that exist lol

Human sniper from Cradle

Sci-fi reader

Please remind me of who is Maya?

PhycoKrusk

I cannot remember where it was mentioned or if I hallucinated it, but I recall that Raza is also young. This story is set just shy of 18 years since first contact between Human and Arxur, so it's entirely possible that Raza is as comparable well-adjusted as she is because she was too young to really comprehend what she was doing (if she had even been born before the Collective War ended). It is very possible that this is her first eyewitnessing of just what life under the Dominion was like, and that while she'd heard of that or even seen pictures or videos, she never actually connected what that meant. I dunno, just guessing.

“This was also the clearest look I’d gotten of just how monstrous my people were, something that made me understand why diplomacy with the prey species was such an uphill battle.” Honestly, I wish MORE Arxur (like Kaisal) were forced into a situation like this. Too many Arxur deal with their difficulties entering into diplomacy with other species by calling it hatred for who they are, but almost none of them every recognize that said hatred isn’t fully undeserved. Raza hates Hossat, and has threatened and planned to do away with him multiple times, but that tiny connection that exists was enough for her to recognize how horrible the treatment the Betterment Arxur were giving Hossat was. Imagine how she’d have felt if she LIKED the Nevok. It’s good that she’s realizing that this behavior is all the rest of the galaxy saw of them for half a millennia. If she can keep following that train of thought, she might actually become a diplomat worthy of taking Isif’s place. “That was nothing compared to my father’s beatings; I can take much more.” I don’t know if the beatings led to Hossat never fully developing proper empathy, or if his father, trying to beat his “predator diseased spawn” pushed Hossat towards his hyper-violent lifestyle, but you can bet those beatings had a major impact on who Hossat is today.

I hope that you enjoyed your binge reading!

It's clearly Maya's evil sister Kaya. Or her daughter Naya.

PhycoKrusk

@Alekss Too risky. Besides causing moral damage where you really would not want to cause moral damage, it's only a matter of time before Isif decides to do something about it, as has happened here. Now, you have his assets getting tangled up with your asset, possibly escalating the conflict in new directions. Never mind that if they manage to find out that it's _your_ asset attacking them, you will irreparably damage any relationship you might have with them, complicating diplomacy in the future, assuming it doesn't just become impossible. Any intel you might recover is going to be of virtually no utility because you can't use it yourself (since you can't get more involved in the conflict without attracting attention), and you can't pass it along to Isif because he's going to wonder and be suspicious of how you got it in the first place. Furthermore, Isif is not going to go along with any plan that involves the regular sacrifice of his own people to collect intel that he might be of no real utility to him either: If he has this sniper available, it would be a much better use of that asset to send it all around the region to terrorize Ilthiss' forces. Knowing the Seftuna Sniper could strike anyone at any time, but leaves noncombatants alone, would severely damage recruiting efforts, forcing Ilthiss to use more threats and brutality to keep his forces operating until the people under his control finally have enough and take him out themselves. You don't win wars by killing your enemy; you win wars by removing their capacity for combat, and you don't need to kill them to do that.

PhycoKrusk

Look, I don't know about you, but I personally am not in the habit of addressing somebody by their full name every single time.

Gumcel

“She” nooo I swear if it’s actually maya I’m gonna turn into venlil jonkler :venlil_joker_baybee: “That was nothing compared to my father’s beatings; I can take much more.” Sorry bozo, still don’t empathize. And more English wordplay! I WILL NEVER STOP BRINGING THIS UP! THE ENGLISH TAKOVER OF THE GALAXY IS REAL!!! WAKE UP VENLIL!

CountryClub

That would be crazy dude! I seriously doubt it, its probably just a human who doesnt want to be a cannibal But that would be so wild!

Elliott

Human merc's motivation isn't the problem here. I'm saying Betterment wouldn't allow it, no matter if they were a psychopath or not. The only arxur faction that accepted humans was Isif, it doesn't make sense as to why they'd suddenly change their mind even in desperation as it's pretty clear their emphasis on ideological purity trumps all.

Elliott

The issue doesn't lie in the willingness for the human, but the arxur. Betterment never fully endorsed humans nor did they seem particularly keen on allowing them. Isif was pretty much entirely humanity's advocate. I don't know if this Betterment remnant/loyalist faction has some more progressive views but considering they wanted to start a civil war over killing detectives I doubt they'd even consider letting a human mercenary into their ranks.

DreamEnvoy

Felra getting revenge on Isif for not responding to messages? Jk Honestly kinda hoping for anything aside from human just to subvert expectations.

DemonVee

They are capable of respecting Humans as long as they show themselves to be ruthless, and the sniper is a she... SP is just teasing Maya fans, whether her being here is realistic or not XD

Alekss Žukovskis

that last joke sent tingles up my spine. somethings not right with this lizard.

Alekss Žukovskis

although, if i was a spycraft grand-master. i would see benefit of someone acting as my enemy (and acting well), and quietly picking off, or sending intel of, far more important enemy targets. its a human scheme were talking about.

Dookus Maximus

Just "Super Kami Guru" then? Because neither of our names are only two syllables.

PhycoKrusk

Na. Throws off the cadence; too many syllables. It's gotta be "Super Kami" followed by two more syllables; every other example follows this because it sounds best.

AnAbsoluteVillain

You dont need anything crazy there are soooooo many mercs in every war on Earth. You forget entire mega cities were bombed and the ones who did it keep living. Helping the Auxur win a war to take the fight to the prey? Tens of thousands might go if it was easy. There would be so many livid individuals that would consider the UN traitorous pascifists. They would be trying to get thier own slice of revenge.

Dookus Maximus

Actually I will revise my prediction. Given the evidence, the Sniper must actually be three - no, TEN - Zurulians in a trench coat. Prepare to shower me in honorifics! I also request that we append "Guru" to the title!

PhycoKrusk

I'll take that bet. For the week following the reveal, the loser has to reply to every comment (but not reply) that the winner leaves, and has to address them with the honorific "Super Kami" in front of their name.

PhycoKrusk

Well, the Sniper being neither Arxur nor Human is all but ruled out: The camp guards appear to have met her, and have a deal of respect for her, so can't be prey. Unless they tried something against her at the first meeting and she effortlessly stabbed so many of them in the face that they had no choice _but_ to respect her.

Dookus Maximus

Boy you're all gonna be embarrassed when it turns out to be a Zurulian and I'm the only one who predicted it 😎

PhycoKrusk

Na. Venom Nevok has too much discipline for that.

PhycoKrusk

No, at this point the Sniper has to be a Human or another Arxur. The camp guards specifically said they were waiting for her; that implies that have met her in the past.

PhycoKrusk

Doesn't make sense; ISR would be supporting Isif's government, not opposing it.

Dookus Maximus

There have been enough hints that the Sniper is a human throughout this series so far that I am now expecting a twist and they're a Zurulian instead. Ooh yeah! They're all about compassionate care but the Sniper has gone full angel of mercy and believes that killing is the most efficient way to end suffering.

Lupusam

The biggest problem I think with "predator-diseased prey" as an answer isn't whether Ilthiss is hypocritical enough to hire her, it's that the arxur of that camp have met her and show respect. She's clearly not an arxur, yes, but not human still seems a stretch.

craig spaulding

A LOT of signs point to a human merc, but an especially “predator-diseased” prey species might be possible still. In the interest of having a different answer than everyone else, I’m predicting an especially rogue Dossur.

REDemon14

Hysran is one of the three best Arxur to ever be hatched/born. The others being Siffy and Kaisal. Poor Hossat. If check to make sure he didn't get a disease from that. The Bloodsoak sounds horrible in every way. Sniper has excellent stamina, is female, gets paid, and eating prey (or Hossat at least) is seen as a hard sell. So her being a human merc is almost all but confirmed. I'm not sure they'd be prey species. Considering they are heading to the Betterment camp. Hossat is one tough cookie. I don't want to know what his father did to make him so resilient to his, albeit brief, treatment by the Betterment arxur.

Anthony Mears

just a thought

mildrey

We already saw examples when characters were saying specific words in a specific languages and they weren't translated (Sovlin asked to call onso a slur). Plus, guard understood what Hossat was saying, so betterment soldiers have translators.

Sci-fi reader

She is too old and too high ranking for field work. One of her subordinates or contractors.

kenneth Moore

I have no discipline… I saved up this side story so I would have something to fall back on during SP’s break. I just blew through them all in a single morning.

Lokyar

General Jones confirmed.

Sci-fi reader

Sniper is a human merc. Someone we know. Probably a CIA plant.

DDDragoni

Eurgh... I'm handling the concept of being dunked in a tough of blood much worse than Hossat did

Storewidesel

*“Hrrr. Yes, fair point; I would be amazed if the Sniper ate this creature.* Sounds to me like that sniper is neither human nor arxur. Maybe she's Hossat's mate and she betrayed him so he's after revenge? Just my theory.

un_pogaz

It was a plan like any other. I admit I was a little worried that it might be a bit too much for Hossat, but I more imagined him becoming deadly vindictive and promising a painful death to the guard. And it's good to see Raza finally considere Hossat. Friends, never ; Equals and respect, certainly and that all we ask.

Anthony Mears

Hossat isn't necessarily the only psychopath in this story.

Anthony Mears

I assume the guard doesn't have a translator otherwise they would not be able to convince him that Hossat means pray. the translator would have corrected that. I guess you don't need to be able to talk to prey

Elliott

If it is a human merc, gonna need an extraordinary explanation to why they're here and fighting for Betterment of all groups. I'd think they wouldn't accept humans after all of the events of NOP1, I mean they started a civil war over wanting to be able to cull defectives.

Sroni

I have a feeling the sniper is a human.

BiasMushroom721

Geuss that confirms it. Sniper is probably a Human merc
