Okay it infuriates me that Meier is placing all of the blame on the other species here for not changing enough in the course of 20 something years when for at least the past decade, humanity has been spending all of it’s time doing basically nothing in their effort to placate everybody. They’ve proven time and again how strong they are and yet have barely pushed back against anything the aliens have done, and now lambasting them for not changing enough over the course of like a quarter of a single lifetime. Humanity has been complicit in everything this organization has done, and the UN refuses to trust anybody aside from the Venlil, and Meier is just ignoring that fact. Like he says, trust is a two way street. How has anything Jones and the rest of the UN done actually been them trusting anybody? They can’t just put all the blame on everyone else, not this time

John

That’s why I live by the policy of nuked city for a stubbed toe.

Ghandi passed away in 1948... It hasn't been barely 3/4 century... Much less "centuries". Pedantic part aside, yeah, you're right. The older idiom is millenia old.

Ezekiah Kane

A wise man once said "An eye for an eye makes the world go blind."

Thrownawaz

That's because it's not the rest of the idiom. 'eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth' was stated thousands of years ago, meaning that a punishment should fit the crime. 'eye for an eye makes the whole world blind' was coined by Ghandi a couple centuries ago, declaring forgiveness to be greater than revenge. Technically it's own idiom, referencing an older one.

pogman

Listening to the ending of Barber: Adagio For Strings, Op 11 was fitting while reading Korajan's break down.

I have to say - Meir really surprised me! Reading the first paragraph I thought he would be back to "lets preywash humans", but no, he finally has the balls to stand up to the Fed-rotten SC and tell them the right thing! It is only unfortunate that this new attitude comes with the desire to make peace with Fed remnants. It's one thing to forgive a faction like the Consortium, who did heinous things but are willing to atone and make peace, and quite a different thing to deal with a group that had over two decades to change, but chose to double down on the very ideology that led to the previous war. It is suicidal to think you can obtain peace when only one side wants it! As for Korojan - a sad story for sure, but than again the NoP universe is full of such sad stories. It does not give him any extra privileges.

EliasArt2Life

I note that when everyone thought the mysterious enemy were Remnants of the Sivkits, no one was this mad at the Sivkits. Yet when it’s human remnants, everyone’s up in arms. “We’ve stuck with you, in spite of what you are.” What did Kaisal say? That the SC would never see us as anything other than predators? Guess the Arxur understand the herbivores better than they understand themselves. Korajan seems to miss that the Ark humans are the same as the Duerten; they had (or at least have all the reason to believe) their planet and species bombed to near extinction, and want revenge. In fact, they were left with an even smaller number than the Duerten. If it’s just for them to be exterminated, the Dierten should have to be exterminated too, for the same crime. I remember something by from the Justice League show; “the problem with an eye for an eye is that everyone ends up blind”. Korajan would do well to hear that. And possibly read some old human revenge stories (like Frankenstein).

Wholesome Redditter

From the sound of it, some members didn’t put their hearts into the commitment with the murmurs. Also dealing with a UN with a spine is much better than getting involved with the fed remittent, the Arxur, or just surviving on your own

Neu5Ac

I'm fairness, "an eye for an eye" is thousands of years old, whereas adding "makes the whole world blind" was added rather recently.

Neu5Ac

That is a very solid and quotable line. Well done, SP!

Michael Halpern

i want to see them go "Operation: Preying Mantis" on the Remnants,

Boingus Doingus

I think Meier got the point across regardless. Korajan certainly seems horrified enough by the mere idea of reciprocal eye gouging.

Roscuro

I honestly kinda want some of the members of the SC to leave, just because I don't believe their hearts are in the right place. Plus drama. Enjoy your well deserved and overdue break!

Greg Gougeon

It bothers me that the rest of the idiom was left out. It's. " An eye for an eye. Leaves the whole world blind." It adds that revenge is a never ending cycle.

Michael Halpern

yeah Jones does what she thinks is necessary, and it's hard to argue with results when no one else in positions of power were being effectual, the problem is more she shouldn't have had to resort to it

Michael Halpern

its publicly available but rather niche, until now

Gumcel

“Many leapt to their feet, clamoring for more details on what these ark ships even were, and why we’d sent them out” Do they not know about the arks? This is publicly available information.

Michael Halpern

Onso will probably be happy, seeing it as a return to form

Kevin Quintana

Why do i get the feeling the eye for an eye saying is gonna spread but not its meaning so there's gonna be a big misunderstanding, possibly with the SC members saying 'that sounds like a good idea!' and the other factions saying 'look see! I knew they were evil!'

Schnitzelsemmel

I know what Meiers speech was about my dude, I’m just joking around. Or maybe I’m not, anyways I hope you enjoy your break and remember we love you and your stories

Space Paladin

Meier’s speech was about not giving the Aafa treatment my dude!

Schnitzelsemmel

Burn the Xenos

Xilacnog

#Elias Meier for Imperator!

Space Paladin

73 is a nice relaxing chapter on Ivrana. Can’t start right off my break on chaos, one warmup chapter 😅

Space Paladin

Always love your feedback Red! Excited to show what comes next for our final act 😅

Space Paladin

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed this, I wanted to end Act 2 on quite a note 😅

Space Paladin

Thank you! I’m taking it now, a NOP breather is nice 😅

Space Paladin

That’s why I’ve always admired him and adored writing him!

Matthew Mclemore

I think they were like the one shield member that came through after Meiers speech. But yeah I don't see them actually offering much

DrewTheHobo

ELAIS, LET’S GOOOOO!!! Finally someone’s saying what needs to be said. Curious how Onso and the other Yotul will react to the UN shift in policy. Next stop, Tinsas!

DemonVee

Why are the Leshee even there, aren't they Shield? I can't see them genuinely wanting to join up to the SC like the Duerten.

Dookus Maximus

Yeah! Wait no

Dookus Maximus

Man, fuck the Remnant. The rogue Farsul are probably working with or even guiding the Remnant. I want to see the SC, Shield, CA, and KC gang up to wipe out the Remnant.

Willy

Loxsel is the perfect embodiment of, “Some men aren’t looking for anything logical or reasonable, some men just want to watch the world burn..”

Daru Arura

I agree, but I don't believe her actual personal objectives have ever been spelled out in any kind of detail other than humanity's survival.

Wesley Rigg

Loxel abridged 4: “Cursed Tinsas!” Loxsel cried, flailing his paws at the ceiling. It seemed he had finished interrogating our generals. “I even fooled myself until I stood at death’s door, tricked into believing the forever-walkers were gentle and peaceful! What a lie, indeed! We representatives are packed into this place they call a reception hall, right where they can assert their dominance. No wonder they half-heartedly tried to reclaim Tinsas; it was humans who stole our love and homes! They were killing without mercy here—slaughtering ten million defenseless Sivkit explorers—while pretending to be our protectors.” “Curse you, predator! Your vile presence is a stain on our land, one that must be wiped clean!” Loxsel cried. “Remove your filthy hands from our world; tell us what you truly want! No more lies from the so-called peaceful ones.”

Schnitzelsemmel

He said it’ll be a week

Quiidek

Elias Meier is officially my favorite human character. I like seeing the UN take a stand for radical peace among worlds.

Sci-fi reader

Love this line; "... Remember that we are all the products of our circumstances, until we decide to be the products of our beliefs..."

Wingit98

The big piece of advice I give to everyone is that all relationships are transactional. If you feel like you're getting a raw deal or the other party isn't living up to their end, it's time to renegotiate or get out.

Matthew Mclemore

The Venlil, Zurulians, Tilfish and Krakotl are steadfast. The Harchen, Gojid, and Paltans are misguided but chilling. The Mazics, Leshee and Sivkits seem the most flighty.

DDDragoni

Also, enjoy your well-deserved break, SP!

NextMan

With all due respect: it’s Onso, a Yotul intelligence officer on the same level of wit and subterfuge as Jones. Of course it was on purpose.

PhycoKrusk

The problem with Jones is that the "better direction" she sees is the one that is most conducive to achieving her personal objectives.

PhycoKrusk

Honestly, someone getting kicked out for not complying with organizational requirements is probably what needs to happen. Not right now, but in the future when someone visibly fails to comply with those pledges. One of the reasons why no one's really being engaging the way they agreed to is because there don't appear to have been any consequences for noncompliance. If noncompliance carries no consequences, then there's no incentive to comply (except when compliance is convenient).

Daru Arura

"Feed 'em to the fishes!"

Daru Arura

I don't hate on Jones for similar reasons. If someone who is predispositioned to subterfuge sees an ineffective approach happening and has the perspective that open opposition won't improve the course, they are going to create things in the background that could help push the direction to one they perceive as a better direction.

TheBlack2007

If anything, the fate of the Jaslips should be sufficient proof there's literally no difference between Predator and Prey other than internalized biases. I really hope the UN puts their treatment by the (mostly) herbivorous Krev in the spotlight at the SC to hammer that point home. Neither the Bissem nor the Jaslips deserve to suffer for something the Arxur committed. But in regards to the Arxur, it should be clear that there can be no forgiving them as long as they don't show even the slightest bit of remorse for their own actions. Countless of species have been hunted and eaten by them for centuries. That's a collective trauma that wouldn't just go away. Therefore, the UN should have pressed for their continued but somewhat softened isolation at least for another 50 years to at least have the generation who grew up with the real threat of Arxur raids and ending up as sapient cattle dying without ever having to see an Arxur again.

REDemon14

Can't believe I forgot to mention the Zurulians! Good bless those Medi-Teddies!

DemonVee

It's a risk, but honestly if they wanted to most could probably just jump into the Shield's open arms, without even skipping a beat from the two parties. There's also the fact that Humanity seems to be the front runner of technological advancement in the Orion atm, right next to the Yotul who are more "extreme" than Humanity and didn't let themselves to be pushed around the same way up until now. I assume that those who aren't real friends to the UN and are just taking advantage of the alliance will realize that this is the point they either get with the program or take themselves back into a more conservative by their standard, but less prosperous alliance. One's who are hammering to get back to war with the Arxur at that... For better or for worse, I think friend or not they'll all stay. Maybe someone will get kicked out for not complying with their pledges at most.

DDDragoni

Not the angle I was expecting Meier to take, but one I'm glad to see he did

Apogee

Awsome! It only took bringing in a dead man to tell everyone what’s what! Finally! I hope this gets the UN out of the pattern of licking everyone’s boots, and start to heal the galaxy more deeply.

PhycoKrusk

Unfortunately, this still leaves a rather large issue: Of the assembled representatives, how many are staying because they agree with Meier, and how many are staying because they're afraid to leave. Because the second category would be the "cheaters"; they'll empty the bank accounts and jump ship the instant they find another partner that they think is more on their level.

PhycoKrusk

It reads more to me like Onso missing the point of the analogy. Running off to join the Remnants would be ill-advised and impossible for Humanity because the Remnants would just kill them. When Meier immediately then explains what he meant, I imagine an edge of exasperation in his voice because he's uncertain if Onso's obtuseness was deliberate or not.

Daru Arura

Holy hell! This feels like the best chapter yet. SP, you are fantastic.

DreamEnvoy

"If we had to pretend in perpetuity to retain a friendship, could those allies even be called allies, let alone friends?" "in trying to stand with everyone, we stood for nothing!" "Are you with us to the end, or with us because it’s convenient?" "If you do not want us in our anger, at our lowest point, and in the rebuke I am giving you right now, you don’t want humanity as a friend. You want some perfect ideal that doesn’t exist: that never existed to begin with." All of these are thoughts I'm glad Meier is having. It's time to see who are humanity's true friends. And the reaction from the diplomats ended up a mixture of every reaction one would expect. Well, a Korajan opening up about survivor's trauma feels odd when he, not too long ago, stormed off demanding genocide in retribution. As for the rest of the meeting, I say "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind".

Shajenko

Meier going beast mode. Diplomatically speaking.

Shajenko

Nothing can be allowed to happen to Loxsel, he's too entertaining.

Dale

Meier daddy let out his big voice today

REDemon14

The SC finally gets the talking to they deserve. "In spite of what you are. " and that's the problem! Treating humanity, not the arxur,as the exception. The Bissem and the Jaslip prove that. I'm not surprised that the ex-feds seem confused about the concept of "Arks", considering that they've been molded into caricatures that put all is their eggs in one basket. So to speak. It's dishearteneding to hear some of the SC members still call for genocide, but I'm happy to hear Meier lambast them for it. Meier showing that humanity leads by example by pointing out the fact that humanity accepted the same species that sought their extermination. We've seen the initial reaction the SC has to finding out about the Ark humans. I wonder how they'll react to how these humans were treated over the past few decades and the other KC aliens. And then theirs Loxsel. Can't say I'm surprised by his reaction. I also like how Meier handled it by pointing out the info about the rouge Farsul that he's been withholding. I feel like we're gonna see "Sivkit-Brain" be thrown around in the coming chapters. Very happy to see that Korajan didn't leave outright. He reveals the source of his ire and pain. Trauma clouds a good amount of his thinking, but he should know that asking a "friend" to kill thousands of his own people is unacceptable, not to mention a very dangerous precedent to set! Looking forward to what is to come from these developements. Enjoy you break, SP. You've earned it!

Luiz Henrique Alves

The true cruelty of the next chapter is how long will be the wait, SP 15 is taking a break after this chapter here, a very deserved break, and this is a very satisfying chapter before his "vacation"

Charles Hall

Fucking thank you, I was so worried Meier was going to give into them. It was refreshing, it's why I'm such a Jones Stan. The U.N was waffling in the wind and she was the only do anything while everyone else just gave into every demand or fell into depression. Those fuckers needed screaming at, also Venlil stay winning.

Alekss Žukovskis

yes. this feels like normalcy. let if flow through you. the next chapter is a cruel one isn't it?

Byron Ritchie

Agreed it what makes both of them so based

Rod

Pure emotional catharsis with Meier's speech. it's unbelievable that even after two decades these mongoloids still think that joining an organisation created by a "predator" is somehow enough to justify their inaction. The Thafki, Leshee, and Mazic diplomats can go pound sand, Onso needs to get humbled, and Loxsel needs to go on Jones' hit list asap.

Elliott

Always love the divide between the species' governments who predictably cower in fear at revelations vs. those who simply reply "GOOD, THEY HAD IT COMING" like the Harchen.

DemonVee

I don't like Onso's first line. “We’re hardly worried about that. Running off to join the Remnants would be ill-advised and impossible, even with your efforts, Elias Meier,” Right after Meier making an analogy about cheating. I could be viewing this through a cynical lense after seeing their rivalry, but it sounds like a "What would you do without me?" type comment to extant on the abusive relationship analogy. The Technocracy already knowing that Humanity is basically trapped in the SC, and that they could use that as leverage against them in their political clashes. (At least up until now since Meier is trying to make themselves less meek) ------ As always, great chapter Paladin. Enjoy your time off ^^

DemonVee

Adore the two, and I'm glad that the Yotul could be trusted with a briefing before the meeting too, even though they still have soured relations.

Swan

"An Eye for an Eye, and the world goes blind" Glad to see Meier hasn't lost his touch regarding speeches, but I'm still worried how the Fed remnant will react to this Enjoy your break/planning time (or what ever you wanna call it) SP :) Edit: Also hope the Yotul-Human alliance recovers under Meier's leadership, considering him and Onso seemed to have similar complaints about the UN/SC's conduct

Byron Ritchie

Huh I was right about the duertern coming around after all, I guess the outburst in korajan’s previous chapter caught me off guard (although it is understandable with the new info in this chapter) despite me expecting it to take at least a few chapters for them to chill

Anthony Mears

Zurulians and Vinlil are ride or die.

Willy

Afternoon people.

Rohn Carver

Schnitzelsemmel

First. Yeah Fuck all those so called Allies they can get the Aafa treatment as well
