Welp. Looks like every fic where they’re like “The Arxur could’ve used the organ cloning tech that came with the botched uplift to solve their food catastrophe instead of terrorizing the galaxy” is either canon-divergent or wrong now. This chapter shows that that tech didn’t exist at the time of the Arxur’s uplift

Quiidek

Bro Nilrie is a dick.

TheDudeAbides

I've just been wondering where their pod was hidden for two centuries.

PhycoKrusk

Memory serving, there was never any evidence to indicate that anybody who was not either working in or confined to a PDF knew what happened inside a PDF.

PhycoKrusk

One person goes in for the operation, three people die as a direct result of it. 19th century medicine was wild, man.

Gumcel

Fed alien try not to be an stupid prick challenge (1851 degree of difficulty: impossible)

Hello There

Probably an open secret but With Nilrie having a memory transcription, they are definitely going to be frozen

TheDudeAbides

I've gotten as far as him learning about bloodletting and immediately my mind jumped to the story or Robert Liston performing an amputation that had a 300% mortality rate so I had to double check and yep, Liston died 4 years before this takes place. I don't see how but I'd love to see Nilrie rafts to hear about a single surgery with one patient that ended in 3 deaths lol

Not-so-fun fact: slavery was never actually abolished. The 13th Amendment prohibits slavery EXCEPT as a punishment for a crime, essentially making legal slave trade the exclusive privilege of the justice system. If you're familiar with how the US' prison system functions, you'll see the government is quite aware of this and exploits it quite thoroughly.

EliasArt2Life

The irony here is that Nilrie fails to recognize the hypocrisy in him being so scared of humanity’s worst parts. They mirror the Federation. The Federation’s treatment of Pre-FTL civilizations is practically Imperialism and Manifest Destiny 101. Why are you taking control of their world? Because they’re primitives and we’re showing them the right way. They say that they don’t want you there? It’s not their choice; it our right. Whether a “divine right” or the “right of the enlightened, civilized species”, the outcome is the same. Executions are barbaric and predatory, but locking up Predator Diseased patients in torture facilities isn’t? I’m not even going into things like having to break away from an empire by force (Nilrie didn’t know about that, anyway). Also, with how much Nilrie is repeating and reaffirming how is worst nightmare is humanity getting ti the stars, I’m almost SURE now that he’s going to wake up from cryogenic freezing in a human building in the modern day.

PhycoKrusk

Critical thinking is predatory.

Mike Rees

Surgery is kind of a last resort though, so it wouldn't be considered primary. Bloodletting was the first thing Blake went to when prompted for what constitutes as medical treatment.

Some Lvm

"I shuddered to imagine a “doctor” that used a cutting instrument as the primary treatment tool." This is a weird way for Nilrie to phrase it, since in the next paragraph he goes in to explanation about surgeries...

Now, what would Nilrie think about predators putting smaller predators in their wounds? And what would the sheriff think about putting maggots in the flesh of someone who isn't dead yet? Yap - that is a thing in modern medicine! https://www.chelwest.nhs.uk/your-visit/patient-leaflets/tissue-viability/maggot-therapy (no pics, just info for patients)

Yannis Morris

Okay well at least we can see that there was some technological development in the Federation. At this point, Cryopods were known but cloning organs wasn't. So they invented their cell cultures later and conveniently forgot they ever relied upon the sacrifices of organ donors

Logan

Its is a bit rich to hear Nilrie think of less of humanity for not 'respecting the autonomy' of a horse considering how the federation colonization process starts within killing all native plant/animal life via orbital bombardment.

Space Paladin

Mental health treatments before recent days on Earth were, sadly, pretty barbaric as well. It might not floor him as much as a more modern human

REDemon14

So Nilrie is a medical Robin Hood and they even hear that humans have such a figure. I never really thought about how organ transplant would be perceived by our ancestors. I was wondering when *slaves* would pop up since it's pre-civil war. Not a good introduction to Feddies. (Arxur might think otherwise). Don't worry, Nilrie. In a little over a decade, slavery in the US will be abolished! : ) (A decade too long...) Nilrie learns about wars of conquest. I feel myself cringing at our past, but all borders of Earth were made by war, so it's not abnormal. Unfortunately Someone should explain to the Feddies that nonsapient animals don't care *too much* about autonomy. They care only about four things. A modicum of comfort Protection from predators Food and water Um, *making more of themselves* That's it. Give them the first three, with the fourth being optional, and you have a healthy, happy friend. You can open the gate to their pins and they'll: walk out, look around a bit, nibble on grass, turn around, and walk back into the pin. Why? Cause they want not of anything else. I don't remember if the feds actually execute people. The end of NoP 1 tends to indicate that they either put you in a PD facility or (if on Aafa) experimented on. I might prefer the execution.

Alekss Žukovskis

"crawled onto a rotting log to let maggots eat his decayed flesh, saving him from gangrene" WHAT THE FUCK??

PhycoKrusk

It's always Frankenstein with you, isn't it? (Also a bit sad to see that Blake doesn't quite understand Robin Hood, but I get it; I didn't understand Robin Hood for a long time, either)

Neu5Ac

Man, it's really aggravating to read Nilrie's line of thought. Why does it seem like everyone in this setting thinks "I'm going to ask all of the questions that will get the worst responses, but I'm going to bite my tongue on all the ones which have much tamer explanations." For instance, if he just asked a little more about horses, he'd find out that killing a horse could get you equivalent charges to a murder of another human, or that there are farriers: people who've dedicated their lives just to taking care of horses' feet. Also funny how the irony is totally lost on him: "bloodletting and manifest destiny is so barbaric! We civilized Feds do organ transplants and uplift/subsume every species we come across instead." On that note, a lot of ancient medicine was actually quite effective. For instance, using bloodletting to fight infections was a bit like sledgehammering a nail, but draining blood that passed through an infected wound was quite effective at slowing the spread of infection. There were other things that also worked even though we didn't know why, such as trepanning and inserting a silver coin over the hole (they didn't know silver had antimicrobial properties, but they knew people were less likely to get brain infections if they had a coin over the hole in their skull), or letting carrion insects eat decayed flesh from a festering wound to halt infection and promote proper scarring. In fact, the Sheriff has probably heard of Hugh Glass, a fur trader who was mauled by a bear and left to die by his comrades, and after waking up several days later, crawled onto a rotting log to let maggots eat his decayed flesh, saving him from gangrene. I also wonder how Nilrie would feel about prosthetics; I suppose we'll know if he they ever come up.

Yannis Morris

I wonder how Blake would react to PD and its treatment. On the one hand, it’s probably still some monstrous s**t. On the other, I’m pretty sure we’re definitely in or before the era of tossing folks in the looney bin

Dookus Maximus

Well, at least Nilrie speaking his mind shows he now fully trusts Blake not to kill him. He is beginning to think more critically without the immediate fear of death.

Sci-fi reader

Dude, people still doing the same. There are two wars going on right now because someone thought it's their right to restore ownership to lands their predecessors presided over.

un_pogaz

Nilrie's motivation was expected, even if he's a lot messier than I'd imagined. Like, breaking into a lab to steal an experimental cure? I hope Nilrie's only been doing this for a short time, otherwise the Federation is really full of incompetents and I can't understand how we could have been run over them in 8 months. Else, for Black, right... Different times, different customs. It's hard to judge him with our modern eyes, but glad it's our past. Else, Nilrie a was a real pain in the ass this chapter with all his condescending remarks. It had to happen at some point, but it wasn't pleasant to read. Please that nothing else will triggerd him like that again, it will be hard to not punch him.

Pineapplepilot

I fucking told you the WILD west was a bad place for first impressions, jeez. "Oh yeah we believe it is our God given right to take everything we want," "yup we do, in fact, go to war with ourselves over things like land and slavery," you bet when we catch a criminal we drop them off an elevated platform with a rope around them to violently snap their neck." Whoopsy daisy Ha ha, I love this story so much. I remember the vote SP did on future miniseries and seeing this one and just thinking "hell yeah."

Alekss Žukovskis

now that i meantion it, i also recall Krakotl extermination group to have an AI assistant on board that recommended actions, but when i reread this part a year later, it was wholly different? am i the only one?

Alekss Žukovskis

wait, i loosely (pun intended) recall someone in NOP1 saying Recel would be swinging or deserving to get a noose around their neck. and here we hear that such an execution is a novelty? Did Kolshians like our methods?
