or slip into cognitive dissonance

John

The Gojids were explicitly scavengers before being ‘cured’, a bit loosely since they ambushed predators that were tired and distracted by eating after a successful hunt and then took whatever prey the hunters had killed but still fits the technical definition. They also called Krakotl scavengers but that seems to be inaccurate since they hunted the prey themselves.

Ethan Rappolt

Y'know, it just dawned on me: the feds didnt even know about omnivores. What would they have thought about scavengers? Sure they eat meat, but only after its died naturally (and been that way a good while)...

Ethan Rappolt

Fun fact: herbivore mammals can get rabies too, but i behaves a fair bit differently. Enough so that its often called "dumb rabies" since it mostly.makes them just stand about listlessly.

Apogee

Nice! Loved the longer interaction and explanation with/about a companion animal. Even though the fact that any animal can be dangerous didn’t seem to hit home with the castaway.

Space Paladin

There’s certainly some irony on that, especially with how social media has turned out!

Charming Cobra

Let's hope that the sheriff is careful enough to keep slaughtered animals and cooked meat out of Nilrie's sight, but once they leave the farm that might be even harder. I can only dread how that will turn out.

“It’s not like people would wanna document every moment of their lives, instead of livin’ ‘em right now. That’d be awful vain. It’s bad enough how obsessed some folk are with gettin’ their pictures taken.” Oh Blake if there is afterlife you have no idea what’s in store for you

Space Paladin

Thank you! I’m glad you’re having fun with it 😅

Neu5Ac

I forgot to mention! Blake hasn't been brushing his horse down after a day on the dusty trail? For shame!

Kevo

Not gonna guess how this goes but I hope for a laugh or two

Gumcel

He’s gonna see someone’s dog and lose his damn mind.

Tobias Sumrall

This isn't the south, this is the Frontier, I'm guessing Arizona/Nevada/New Mexico.

EliasArt2Life

Glad that this sherif is quick to catch on. How long before Nilrie finds out? I’m guessing the next chapter, but I’ll give it 2 chapters tops. Not enough people know what to be careful of, and Nilrie could see cattle or a dog or something similar at any moment. Marlo’s sounds like quite the incorrigible troublemaker. He’s probably going to make his move soon. It sounds like he’s got something of a posse backing him up, too. Is this going to end up in a shootout, like in High Noon?

EliasArt2Life

Fun fact; by 1851 (when this story takes place), there are some forms of “video”, although animation based, not photograph based. The Zoetrope is an example of this, and was invented in the 1830s. Granted, these frontier settlers likely have never even heard of this device, so it doesn’t impact the story much, but still interesting!

Assailant

Given that this takes place in the antebellum south, I wonder if Nilrie is gonna come face to face with slavery. This seems more like a desert area (I don’t recall if we’ve been given an exact location), so there’s a strong chance he won’t (at least in person), but still… I wonder what Blake thinks about the institution…

Neu5Ac

American Midwest frontiersmen often had quite a fair share of meat in their diet, IIRC. One of the major reasons for going out west was for cattle ranching (primarily for leather), so there wasn't exactly a shortage of meat. That said, it seems quite likely that Blake and Kitty know what Nirlia is saying and are staying mum about it.

DrewTheHobo

Really enjoying this side story!

Neu5Ac

Great story so far. I wonder if the topic of predator disease will come up? I hope when it does, someone says "oh, you mean rabies," and then Nilrie can really be thrown for a loop when he hears it simply kills humans rather than turning them into ravenous monsters. Also, I think it bears mentioning that flying machines actually did exist in the 1850's, in the forms of balloons, parachutes, and early gliders. The former two would almost certainly be well known to American Midwesterners, and they may have heard of the latter through telegraphed news. Of course, that still means that a flying machine that's bigger and more powerful than a locomotive or a paddleboat would be mind-boggling.

Neu5Ac

Humans have had low cost solar powered calculators capable of lasting for years since the 80's. It might be possible that the Feds have photovoltaics, high density solid state batteries, and high efficiency displays for their tablets that grant them effectively unlimited battery life.

Some Lvm

Depending on how out of the way that town is, Nilrie him self could fetch a pretty penny, being sold to a traveling carnival... Also, just how long does a battery on a holopad last? Unless they meet up with doc Brown, I have a filling our narrator is about to loose his voice. Also, the memory transcript format sadly means two issues for this story: 1) It spoils the fact Nilrie does get off the planet somehow in the end. 2) We are not getting the sheriff's POV, which is a shame...

Yannis Morris

Can’t wait for Nirle to come to the realization that bathing typically requires water, of which the supply is limited out in the frontier

Alekss Žukovskis

ill bet against. Marlow v Nilrie though, 110%

REDemon14

It ain't called the *wild* west for nothin', Nilrie. I kinda expected that reaction from the humans when arxur footage came up. Hearing how the Feds. indoctrinated the other species into "prey don't fight back" really good to show that they had no intention of ending the war. Absolutely tragic When, Nilrie finds out the truth, he is gonna *freak out*.

Stueymon

I'm betting money on there being an Arxur v Blake show down

Pineapplepilot

Yeah, the wild west was kinda a hellscape in a lot of ways, I'm not sure that time period is the best for first impressions on humanity. Then again, some of the greatest heroes come out of places like that. I'm not sure how this miniseries will end, but I trust it'll be entertaining to read :D

Bbobsillypants

Im wondering if the sherif and his wife are intentionally not mentioning that they eat meat, or if they are simply misconstriung his meaning and contextualizing flesh eating as cannabalism. Likely because they probably dont eat alot of meat themselves probably getting most of that from milk and eggs. That being said, thats not a bandaid thats gonna stay unripped forever, if thier trading thiers a good chance some of it is furs. And what happens when they need to explain the actual what and why of a cowboy.

Wingit98

Well, at least he's seeing some of our positive traits and acknowledging that they're by no means "predatory" traits thanks to this misunderstanding, but just wait til he sees the local butcher shop.

un_pogaz

In the first chapter, many theorized about how Nilrie's transcript was obtained, which, inded, raises a lot of questions. The most likely theory for me is that he will return to the Federation, be arrested and cryogenically frozen in the Archive (and thus later rescued with the others abducted). Here it comes my imagination: When Nilrie will be de-cryogenized, he will see humans. Very surprised, he'll ask them "What are you doing here?"... in English... with a cliché Far-West accent. After a moment of legitimate incomprehension from everyone (Who the Fuck a Takkan talk English like that?), it's going to be quite a moment as Nilrie explains that he crashed on Earth in 1850 and made great friends with the locals before finally leaving with his repaired ship. It could be a good final chapter.

un_pogaz

oh it's going well. There are a few misunderstandings that could prove problematic in the long run, but it's going well. Blake's the type who wants to remove the band-aid right away, which I understand, but stalling and using diplomacy and tact will be much more winning. But apart from the expected, I'm really curious to see how they'll interact with each other's technology. That little example was interesting, more. Else: Main Antagonist Located.

th3h4ck3r

I'd imagine they'll eventually go around back and find a couple chickens for eating the table scraps. He'll probably think it's for turning scraps into fertilizer for the plants, and the human will say "yeah but also eggs".

Youre a swedekisser arent you

Oh dear, he's misunderstood our diets. This can only end in extreme funnies.

Lentil time.
