Some Lvm

Sounds like Aafa go off easy... Sure, violent regime changes are never easy, and the isolation is the mother of all sanctions, but it sounds to me like they got their shit together pretty fast. They could have ended up a lot closer to Mad Max than Russia or Cuba.

Space Paladin

Good news then; it's arrived! I'm glad you're enjoying the story

Xilacnog

Humanity's place in the Consortium? That's easy, it'll be brains for the Tombril's Cyborg suits.

Jack

Wish I could read the next part already, well done

Space Paladin

Thank you!

Space Paladin

I thought it’s a story that’s important to tell! Kelvanis deserves the world 😅 he just needs to find that one person who seems him for who he is

Ellen

I was thoroughly disinterested in the story of a kolshian… and now two episodes in AND YOU BEST NOT HURT A HAIR (er… what would a Kolshian have on their head…) ON KELVANIS’S HEAD!!! Seriously though, this hadn’t been anywhere near the top of my list of side stories but truly, I absolutely adore it already!

mitsos_pr

Awesome story!!

Ron1990

I like your side- stories very much. They bring so much more "fluff" and lore to the setting. I must confess, I'm addicted to fairytales, foremost modern ones. But beware fellow readers, this is not a sign of infancy. Since to the late 18th century, fairiytales were one of the most widespread form of literature read in the aristocracy. I hope, Kelvanis will get what he wants in the end of this arc and the situation of Aafa will get better. Imho it's unjust to imprison a whole planet. In analogy to real world history, the SC seems stuck between the trials of Nuremberg and the foundation of the Ferderal Republic of Germany. It feels like the plan of Henry Morgenthau to fully deindustrialize the German Reich is in full effect on Aafa. I'm of the second generation after the war, my parents born around the end of WW2 and it's unsettling to think about an outcome, where Germany were not needed in the Cold War and where we all, my parents, me, my children and grandchildren would pay the price of our ancestors deeds.

Guardian

Most policies are indeed written in blood, after all. But if your theory is indeed the outcome, that would be awesome. Moar wholesomeness FTW.

Guardian

While I pity the plight of Kolshian civvies, I would also argue this is a fairly realistic outcome. It's why I less-than-three'd the Gojid Refugee miniseries so much: wholesomeness in spades. I would also argue that SP is deliberately weaving allegories/parallels of real-world events into his narratives, which I think is awesome. The best stories are those that make you think.

Guardian

Heh, well, when there's a chance of bioweapons/germ warfare, I doubt you'd find many soldiers/rebuilders willing to take the risk.

KC

only had kelvanis for one chapter but I love him and if anyone hurts him in any way, I will find a way to hurt them.

Neu5Ac

I was kind of hoping the first Kolshian she encountered would be a red herring. Oh well, it still looks interesting.

RaptorRed

This is neat, interested to see where this will go. I will give kelvanis a chance, would I have without the memory transcriptions though? Maybe not.

Diosjenin

Not exactly running a Marshall Plan 2.0 down there, are we...

George Smith

And have access to biological and chemical weapons

Alekss Žukovskis

I don't think Kolshian common people deserve this kind of treatment. They were never a democracy, so its expected that they couldnt have controlled their government.

Gumcel

“There’s no reason to have those irrational fears. I’m only a little afraid of them” Lmao “Did they really think I’d come here just to do as much damage as possible to their station?” I don’t think it’s unreasonable to have measures to prevent attacks. Especially true when, as he said himself large amounts of kolshians see humans as nonsapient.

DrewTheHobo

I wonder if Kelvanis and Chloe are going to start a real movement to open Aafa back up, at least for more humanitarian aid. Also, I bet the defenses on the station are there because some have actually tried to bomb it before.

Space Paladin

Their biosphere definitely isn’t in a good state, so that would affect the farmable land/crop diversity

un_pogaz

I like very much Kelvanis. He's got that mix of optimism and realism that keeps things moving. Optimistic enough to try crazy things, but tempered with enough realism to know it's going to be tough. On the other hand, poor Kelvanis, his great good will his swept away by all the Kolshian assholes and fanatics who came before him. I wonder how he will react when he realizes that all his precautions, and other details like the audio message about cultural differences, were *not* unfounded.

Sci-fi reader

Of course it's dumb. There is a word for it. Racist.

Michael Halpern

no worries, the Krev Consortium seem to have that covered...

EliasArt2Life

Does Kelvanis?

EliasArt2Life

I hope for all the possible success for Kelvanis. His family has been through enough. Orphaned with their mother being on Caato. The ONE Kolshian settlement that we couldn’t stop the Durten from bombing, and it had their mother on it… Regardless of if the Kolshians deserve it or not, Kelvanis and Volani do not. They were kids who lost everything to the war. Thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of others stuck on Aafa are in a similar spot, and they don’t deserve it any more than Kelvanis and his sister do. Hopefully, Kelvanis’ struggle can bring attention to the issue, and create a surge of volunteers and employees so that the UN can hire people who ACTUALLY care, rather than being forced to resort to the specisists who are willing to keep that hatred down for the most part. I also hope that Kelvanis can get a message to his sister, or something, and convince her to take the plunge as well. They shouldn’t have to be separate.

Tyler Ellis

Oh boy, we giving them the Weimar Republic treatment. I hope this doesn’t bite us in the end. Hopefully there are no aspiring artists on Afaa who just got rejected from art school.

Peter

I assume “Kelvanis, don’t get on that ship." is actually supposed to be “Kelvan, don’t get on that ship."

Bungus Grungus

That human totally thinks there's anthrax in that blanket now.

Anemoia

I wonder how well Aafa is able to feed their people. We know they remove all predators from their ecosystem, we know that that leads to severe ecological consequences, and we know Aafa mostly relied on imports. How much fertile agricultural space dovthey have left?

Michael Halpern

another answer, the station could easily be a converted warship, it'd be cheap and easy to set up, with how quickly tech evolved, the older Terran warships that survived would be very obsolete by the end of the war, and only so many can be museum ships, depending on how efficient production got, and the supply of salvage, it might have been cheaper to repurpose many of them than to upgrade or scrap them.

Roscuro

The meeting will be both of them confusedly tripping over themselves. Also, when talking to his sister he says "Kelvanis. Full name Kelvanis." Is he supposed to say a full name there, or is he stating Kelvanis is his full name?

Michael Halpern

I get the feeling some joker put some of the more interesting examples of Earth Flora in one of the lobby areas of the station, like Sundew and flytrap.

Michael Halpern

The Farsul probably have it much worse, they KNEW, and deliberately perpetuated the lies, because they didn't see anything wrong about what they did, the Koloshians hid what they did from their own people, demonstrating they had the moral awareness to recognize the problematic nature of their actions. edit at least the Farsul that didn't leave their homeworld

Danny Luca

Are the other Kolshian worlds also quarantined? If I remember correctly, they have multiple worlds which is why they had such a large industrial capacity. What about the Farsul? Considering they were one of the original founders, I’m positive they should have more than one world.

Danny Luca

Same!!!

Danny Luca

Sadly with the humans infestation that happened when they hunted the shadow caste, they left behind many particulates and infected the once pure populace. It’s all Maronis warned!!

Vladi Vladi

They simply in prison for centuries of cultural, biological and technological genocide. 15 years in prison for your specie being a dick is a pretty lax sentence (considering every single other sapient wanted to glass them instead). They aren’t gonna be kept for much longer anyway. Like two generations top at most (so around 40 years, even if Kolishians live much longer than that). Any more time in the box would lead to extremism and that’s no good. The UN has the massive boon of being the only reason the Farsul and the Kolishians are still alive, so they aren’t actually all that resentful for the dismantling, rather they are bored out of their minds because they can’t see what became of the Sapient Coalition.

Space Paladin

Kelvanis is not responsible for what his species’ government did 13 years ago!

Space Paladin

Thank you!

Space Paladin

They are warm blooded!

Byron Ritchie

Looks like we’re seeing the darker side of the SC and the UN in this series

Willie

From crown jewel to abandoned garden This will be very interesting I wonder how the puppies are doing in theyre cage?

Kevo

The kolashians deserve it imo

Alekss Žukovskis

are kolshians warm-blooded? or their blood is adapted for lower temperatures quite well?

Mark Baculna

Sci-fi reader

A SC or UN peacekeeping keeping force is needed to restore order.

Sci-fi reader

Ah. Remember Covid, when Asian looking people were voilently attacked in the streets of America? Remember WW2, when AMERICANS of Japanese ancestry were put into interment camps and had their properties and businesses seized by the government?

Sci-fi reader

"... puzzled me why they expected an explosion from the inside, unless their spaceships crashed or malfunctioned that often. Terrans wouldn’t have crushed a millennia-old empire with that kind of engineering..." Unless the name is Boeing, humans are that paranoid. Love the Kolshian civilian POV.

Piittis

It's dumb how the humans refuse to separate their views of the Shadow Caste from the regular citisens. It's also very realistic sadly. Hopefully Kelvanis can achieve his goals. Chloe is definitely the best person he could've been assigned to, at least judging by how everyone else there has been acting.

Mari

I was thinking the same thing!

TheDudeAbides

I really like this side-story, can't wait for the next chapter.

Swan

Here's to hoping the situation improves by the NOP2 era; the quarantine stuff for me feels like a blemish on the UN's otherwise (mostly) clean moral record, which just grows the longer it goes on for. I'm guessing part of why things aren't better is due to the rest of the SC being vengeful, but a quarantine this long, and this complete is starting to become monstrous; they are gonna have to forgive (at least somewhat) at some point, unless they wanna become monsters themselves. Side note: by "Clean record" i don't mean that every action was objectively "Right", but they could at least all be justified by necessity

Stueymon

Gives me Gaza strip vibes

Byne

Hearing how Aafa is, it kind of makes me want a series focused on either Aafa or Talsk thats just like a collection of one shot memory transcripts from citizens ranging from the fall of the Federation to the current day documenting the planet's decline.

TheBlack2007

"Through the veneer of politeness, I caught the thinly-veiled implication hidden in that automated message. The humans were addressing us like subsapient visitors that couldn’t exhibit decorum around other species." I mean, considering it was his species that once held a human Envoy at gunpoint because they believed he wouldn't be able to control himself enough to not lunge at the nearest diplomat and devour them I would say it's pretty rich to complain about it.

Paperclip

I got here 10 minutes after the chapter posted and you already had this typed out. You're fast as hell, man

Logos

Funny to see so much crime on Aafa. Isn't that predator behavior? Surely a good prey species would not get into fights with each other over accessibility to resources? That sounds like something a human or an Arxur would do, not a Kolshian!

Paperclip

Aafa's not gonna last much longer in the shape it is. The UN's "minimal interaction" approach is going to cause the destruction of the Kolshian homeworld if something doesn't change. Perhaps Kelvanis can shed some light on the average civilian's situation and convince the humans that they aren't like Nikonus, especially those managing asylum requests. The asylum seekers are probably the least brainwashed of the Kolshians and are getting treated like this, and I feel that the hatred is a bit unwarranted. Kolshian citizens were victims too, just in a different way.

Pleaseandthabkyou

Oh god this is sad

Youre a swedekisser arent you

I really like this chapter! Kelvanis is a pretty noble figure, wanting to show the galaxy that the Kolshians are not the same species as they once were. Speaking of that, the Kolshians have really been brought low by the restrictions put on them. It really brings into question if they deserve to still be quarantined now that many of their people were barely old enough to have even remembered a time before their current state. The bond between Kelvan and Volani seems really sweet from the little we get to see if it, and it also gives us some info about how he's pretty resilient and quite different from the stereotypical ex-Fed. His strength of character is definitely going to be a surprise for Chloe, who's expected a more exactly what he isn't. I get the feeling that it's gonna be oddly funny to see the two interact!
