No. If an “I” went there, that would mean Marcel is looking for redemption alongside Sovlin, but “myself” is singular, not plural. “Help Marcel an redeem myself” means to do two things: A) to help Marcel B) for Sovlin to redeem himself. I understand the confusion, though. It took me a couple rereads to make sense out of it.

Nul Atlas

Veln is 100% a federation plant lmao

Pleaseandthabkyou

I have a feeling this links into their materarcheal society

Wickerwood

Racist grandpa is trying hard

OrbitOnHigh

I think you missed and "I" in" This wasn’t only to help Marcel and "I" redeem myself—it was personal."

PhycoKrusk

This does open up some questions about their use of firearms. I mean, you don't necessarily need thumbs, as long as you stick to rifles, so maybe it doesn't matter....

Greg Gougeon

We know he never gets better thats why his memory transcript got messed up at the end his brain was fried

PhycoKrusk

Hand grenades as we generally think of them are a relatively new invention. They have existed at least since the Age of Sail, but rather than being thrown from the deck of one ship to another, they were reserved for after boarding: If the defenders retreated into the hold, rather than taking the risky route by going down after them, the boarders were drop a couple grenades down first and then go after them. Kolshians clearly have a past of warfare (this, why they have the advanced weaponry they do), so it's hardly a stretch to think they developed grenades. Grenade launchers are a more effective form of the rifle grenade, and the rifle grenade was originally conceived of as a more portable alternative to the mortar, which was itself an iteration of the cannon to allow for indirect fire over obstacles that would otherwise block cannon fire. Kolshians clearly developed cannons in the past, so it's not unreasonable to think they also developed mortars. It doesn't take much thought to combine a grenade with a mortar, especially if they don't have the shoulder torsion necessary to really throw a grenade. Do you suppose that maybe we're thinking about this too hard? Or at least that I am?

Adam Myers

Two observations: I am increasingly suspicious that Sovlin's racism is turning into a subconscious self-imposed demand for him to stay on brand. My earlier claim that calling Onso primitive is an anchor to the new reality he finds himself in seems to be gaining more and more support. As far as the Kolshians, I really don't think they developed that technology in secret, they most likely are mimicking humanity. Indeed, while I want a Kolshian to be taken prisoner, I suspect that rather than my initial thought that they were there to gas the place, that the prisoner will reveil that the Kolshians are desperately trying to copy Terran successes without fully understanding how they worked. I can't think of a good reason for Kolshians to develop grenades. I could see concepts that are similar to grenades, but not actual grenades as that would require the arm torsion that is, as far as we know, unique to humans. No other race would really have a use for actual grenades. It would be like us humans drinking a Gojid concoction that made spines extra sharp, it really wouldn't do anything for us, given the noticeable lack of spines. Without the ability to properly utilize the technology, the tech is largely useless. So, rather than the Kolshian's master plan involving biowarfare like I predicted, it appears that the Kolshians are playing 1D checkers. It looks like rather than making the Kolshians more prone to killing humanity, Slanek has actually crippled the Kolshian strategic thinking by removing Nikonus. Interesting. So, I think I am either 2 for 2 or 3 for 3 in my predictions being wrong. Not gonna lie though, I am pretty happy that I was wrong, I don't like my predictions coming true.

Gogid philosophy getting mentioned a suspicious amount

DemonVee

When they get to Slanek, I kinda hope the Kolshians try to present him on live Television. Showing off how they "fix" people. Only for all of it to blow up in their faces as the rescue gets broadcast for everyone to see and Slanek manages to fight through whatever conditioning they put him through.

PhycoKrusk

I'm a little sad now too. We haven't seen Sovlin do any really gangster shit since Chapter 66.

DemonVee

I mean it was made pretty clear that she was eaten live on camera, Sovlin mentioned how he saw it happen... But that would be horrifying.

PhycoKrusk

The sense I have is that it's not a "full-size" warship; it's optimized to go unnoticed, and in the event it gets into trouble, speed is how it gets out versus trying to shoot its way out. More like a PT boat than a destroyer, and probably smaller than that, even. I assume that they have someone on the inside (Kolshian or otherwise) telling them where Slanek is, and that he is not actually on Aafa, which is why this stealth approach will even work. Or, Slanek is on Aafa, and they have a plan to spoof their way past security. Or, Slanek is on Aafa and they don't have a plan to spoof past security, in which case we should all buckle up, because they're about to do some gangster shit.

Neu5Ac

Sovlin having peace of mind? We can't have that. I wonder if his daughter survived the Arxur raid and wound up becoming cattle breeding stock?

Some Lvm

So, Hunter was left with Vysith of all people? I get that she is "out of time" like him, but still... That is totally a bonus story I would love to read! Or at least a one shot - can we please have the "60's kid and the lizard lady" one shot? On a separate note: Shouldn't that warship have a security detail? Or a marine detachment? Why is the bridge crew left fending off most of the boarders on their own? I get that NoP humanity is new to deep space combat, but if they are clever enough to land full size nuclear subs on another planet, they can figure out basic space navy stuff, they sure have the history for it... Don't get me wrong - the action is great and a joy to read, but still...

architectural engineer

can someone please translate this into a better script i can't decipher whats this supposed to mean or what it is saying

S1nsational

Solvin is obviously the primitive one, on the grounds of not having opposable thumbs, or any thumbs at all.

PhycoKrusk

I'm still putting my space dollars on nobody's going to die; SP is just screwing with us because it's funny

Ondram05

Sovlin im bored im- im gonna kill you *classical music* UAAAAH *classical music continues* *insert brain damaged Sovlin Gosling here*

GeneralLDS

well that’s ironic. just the other day i was having a conversation in patron chat about pretentious and snobby the word ‘atavistic’ makes you sound

Youre a swedekisser arent you

Did you miss the part where -only- people can be as evil as the Kol-sul or Arxur? No animal could hope to do what any of them did.

se05239

The most dangerous beast is one cornered. The squids got something more in stock.

BigSneppy

Sovlin’s gonna owe a fortune to the racism jar

PhycoKrusk

Oh, Sovlin. "Was Onso responsible for that ambush? Well, that doesn't make any sense, he's just a Yotul! But you know what? Nothing makes sense. I'm surrounded by predators in the middle of space while heavily armed fish-men are trying to kill me, I've basically adopted one of these predators as my son after pulling him out of a chest freezer, and a completely different predator whose species I have a Gojidi blood feud with treats him like she's his mother, and I can't get enough of it, so sure! The Yotul is the smartest one on the ship, why not?! I'm going to bed...."

PhycoKrusk

That's basically all he's ever wanted. He really only did the Captain thing because, well, he needed purpose in his life. And when a man feels he no longer has purpose as a man, he can almost always find purpose as a weapon. Then along comes Hunter, who needs a lot of help understanding the world around him; like a child in many ways. And suddenly, Sovlin feels like maybe, just maybe, he doesn't have to be a weapon anymore.

PhycoKrusk

Grenade launchers are actually a pre-industrial weapon; on Earth, rifle grenades started appearing in the 1700s. After hitting their fourth world war, it seems unreasonable that the Arxur had not independently developed dedicated grenade launchers.

PhycoKrusk

Is it? Cuz for someone who hasn't read that many fanfics, it just seems like a grenade launcher. ETA: I reread the comment, and now I get the joke, and I'm a little bit mad at myself for having missed it, because it's great.

Danny Luca

Between Sovlin talking about retirement and the line about this being personal…… we have a new candidate for the not making it home team

astatine

He's like an RPG character, leveling up his wisdom from the XP of killing his enemies

Roscuro

It makes sense the gojid don't have thumbs, I just never thought about it before.

Byron Ritchie

I Like how sovlin puts the dots together and realises that kolshians are the true predators

Jonathan Cardoso Mota

ATAVIST! He called him atavist! At this point he isn't even being racist against yotul, he just has it out for *Onso* in particular. It isn't even racism, it's just Onso. Also aww... The fact that talking to *Vysith and Hunter* made him think of children's day with his daughter. Goddamit, Sovlin just wants to go back to being a caring dad, he doesn't want none of this :<

Bbobsillypants

Dont let sovlin do the interogation lol

Bbobsillypants

Very ironic ending considering his tragic backstory

Bbobsillypants

I misread the intro to this chapter and thought sovlin was telling his kids about gojid christmas mid raid. Which would have been on of the most gangsta thing in this whole series.

Vladi Vladi

“the grenade launcher was a weapon I’d only seen used by Terrans and by the Arxur before them. It shouldn’t surprise me that the tentacled bastards would replicate“ oh Solvin you naive old fool… Arxur are an uplifted specie. They were industrial when the Federation contacted them, but chances are Grenade Launchers were a Kolishian invention. Why do you not remember it? It’s not your job to be a warrior race, Gojids were canon fodder for external threats. If the Arxur could’ve survived on plant matter, they would’ve become the new bulwark of the Conspiracy. After all, actual predators make for much better soldiers than some simple Piscivore opportunists

PassengerNo

Finally! Solvin gets it. This whole thing is not Predator vs. Prey, it is Person vs. Not-Person.

Byne

I feel like he's becoming less racist towards predators and compensating by becoming more racist to Onso specifically.

Jacob Blankenship

It’s crazy seeing the Gojids remain the most brainwashed and zealous elitists despite the Farsul info leak

EliasArt2Life

The Kolashians come off as more and more desperate, the longer this series goes on. We’ll be landing on Aafa soon. Hopefully that’ll be when we get to see more from Aucel.

Wholesome Redditter

Sovlin: I may be a (former) predators but at least I’m not a Yotel.

sticksnstones

He's saved up some good boy-porcupine points. I think it's safe to let the war criminal have a little racism, as a treat. And I don't think it's genuine malice anymore, so that's a plus!

sticksnstones

I'm starting to think he's trying to keep it up as a joke. He's still pretty prejudiced, but slowly letting it go, and now he's the cantankerous old man that needs a cuff every now and then. After all, no one had to tell him that it was Onso that set off that trap, he considered it on his own this time!

HiMyNameIsFelipe

Mf still cannot let go that Yotul are smart

John Benjamin Cate

I hope that there turns out to be some Kholshians who surrender here. That would be interesting to see.

Pyroraptor

Thanks for the chapter!

dotnet

Nice to see Sovlin finally have that breakthrough about predators, although I feel like he's actually gone backwards on his behavior towards Onso compared to his previous chapters.

ArchitectOfTears

Paladin wrote: "The dazed Kolshians found their composure, and one crept forward with a canon-like object" Not exactly canon, but close. Fanfic weapon!

Anemoia

I wanna see Sovlin live through the war, marry Vysith, and adopt Hunter. Don't let me down.

XavHD

Sovlin: This isn't even my final form!

Kaiser Marcqui

Others might be more centered in the 'action' parts of this episode, but I absolutely loved the character development Sovlin's getting. He's slowly becoming less and less racist. His “I finally get it. Predators aren’t monsters by default, and Gojids weren’t either. We were just people.” line is just absolute fire. I love it.

Pariah Devalis

Ey! It only took a gunfight to make Sovlin realize being an omnivore doesn't make him inherently evil!

th3h4ck3r

What a surprise, Sovlin does a racism

Joe Mathew

It's going to be really interesting seeing the political aftermath of this. Humans if they win, could use this as proof of Kolshian brutality and also their predatory nature.

Joe Mathew

Perhaps they're screened for predator disease and chosen from there. "If you join us, we'll let you live a life of glory in the shadows"

Mylax Kindflame

Shadow Caste training must be absolutely brutal. They seem to have legitimate combat experience, and their disregard for life almost sounds like the Arxur’s eugenics. Maybe these Kolshians are specifically bred to be better soldiers? I would bet that they probably were “selected” by being pitted against each other in live fire exercises

Anthony Mears

1 Thanks for the chapter. So, Hunter and Vysith just hang together? I mean, it's not surprising but a lot has happened off screen between "sit down and talk to your enemy" to " Let me tell you and Hunter about Gojid-mas" Atavist, indeed. You know, if a primitive is defined by their level of technology at the time of their uplift, the Yotul had steam power and early industrial revolution. The real primitives were the dirt scratching, hut dwelling Gojids.
