Wes, The drill Dr does, work well. It requires a light touch. Aligning the bit in the chuck is important, misalignment will give asymmetrical results. After giving a light turn of the chuck in the sharpener back off pressure when grinding noise stops. If you continue to rotate and press you will hear a second brief grind. That is the bit getting mangled. After a few light slow passes check the bit. if it looks good you are done. I it needs more grinding then go through the chuck alignment process again, as the bit is now shorter, and repeat light sharpening passes.

I share your thoughts and feelings about the drill doctor. I purchased one years ago and basically had the same experience as you. Been sitting on the shelf ever since. I guess when I'm gone my boys can figure out what to do with it... Great video. At least I know now that it just wasn't me not being able to get that paperweight to work.

I wrote off the drill doctor ever since I watched a welder youtuber, ChuckE2009 , throw his in the trash and declare if its a bit big enough to sharpen on the grinder, good, small bits just toss and buy new. That was enough for me not to buy one. Think that guy got cancelled for being a white nationalist or something. Anyway, great vid as always. Sucks the last vid didn't do well. It was right in my wheelhouse.

They're basically just like AliExpress or BangGood, but with a basic supply infrastructure in the US. They don't make anything, and I don't know how they handle warranties. I'm sure a lot of their stuff is junk, but there are some gems.

I've been pretty impressed with their stuff and their prices. I got a small Vevor welder to keep in my truck, it's tiny but I've been incredibly impressed with it's welds, It can get good penetration on stuff it has no right being able to effectively weld, it weighs like 2 lb, runs off a small Honda gen set and it was dirt cheap.

Another great video Wes, I've never used a drill sharpener, but that vevoir one looks pretty slick. I love Barn Swallows and Dragonflies they're like little fighter jets and helicopters that eat mosquitoes.

Ive used a drill doctor once, it did not work well, the whole negative cutting angle thing really is an unforgivable design failure.. I could forgive a lousy geometry issue that makes oversize holes or even tends to walk a little when starting, but a sharpener that makes bits that don't cut? no thanks. clearly if you have 200 bucks and a ton of dull bits you should buy the vevor. if you only have less than that then get a bench grinder (frankly anyone who does enough drilling to have dull bits probably already has one) , and I really don't see a use case for buying a drill doctor.

I think both videos were great, thanks Wes. I, err, didn’t think you could sharpen drill bits, I’d always presumed they were hardened or tipped, and once that was gone they were scrap. This is where being a software engineer gets you in life…

Most of Texas is a "Three Crop" State. Markets determine which ones, but also how quickly they can be harvested, too. Cotton needs high, dry, heat for the best fibers, and everyone plants the "early boll" varieties. Winter Wheat is pretty common for the October to February span, as the stalks can be cut back into the soil after harvest.

Wes, I'm writing this before reading the other comments so I didn't get biased by them. I've had 2 Drill Doctors. The 1st was used in original box from a renovation job. It looked brand new and absolutely useless. It couldn't grind a 118° or 135°. The 2nd was a Father's Day present. I tried my best to .make it work. Nope the bits came out as bad or worse than they started. I had a entire toolbox 14"×6"×4" filled to overflowing with worn, dull, and chipped bits. It weighed around 20# (10kilos). I bought the Vevor drill sharpener and spent a week just sharpening bits, because after the 2-3 coming out better than factory, I wanted to get then all into the drill drawers. Thick web, thin web split point, 118°, 135°, it didn't matter, they came out good-great. The only bits that I couldn't do were spade bits, which is completely understandable. The Vevor isn't designed to sharpen those. A small triangular file, vise and patience. I haven't tried doing masonry bits, but I only have ~15 or so that need attention. Easier to buy a new one if I need one that I don't have.

I have used a chinese drill sharpener just like the Vevor but another brand for about 5 years now. I have a small machine shop, so i have sharpened thousands of drillbits on it. And its really good, its a heavy quality machine. I never used a drill doctor but it seems very light and plastic.

I know I watched and enjoyed it and the comments said the same. I am wondering if, instead of relying on the YT algorithm to drive views, that the 1000 Patreon members here post some links on their other social media apps to attract attention to the channel on YT. I've been eyeing a drill doctor for a long time. BUT...back when I worked in a machine shop, I learned to sharpen bits by hand...so my bits fall into two categories now: bits too small to hand-sharpen that I just chuck...and larger bits I do by hand just good enough to get by.

My Nephew bought me a drill doctor a long time ago. It sat in the box under my bench for a decade unopened. I'm a DIY guy but to the extreme. I admit, if my drill is shot, it usually gets cast into a box full of them, and I buy a new one. Having a pretty full box of dull bits collected over several years, I decided to break out the Drill Doctor. I sharpened every one of them. Not being a Wes, I have zero idea how good these bits are. Lol, I haven't tried any of them. They look OK to me but I suspect they suck. Not sure. Thanks for the information Wes. I love your content what ever it may be. God Bless.

That other machine looks like it was meant to be used by people used to precision in the thousandth, and not in the sixteenth or eighth. It seemed quieter on the bench, too.

I tried the spit point function on mine once or twice and decided that was a terible waste. I mostly use it for 3/8 and under bits. Does ok. I only have one because I got it brand new out of the box for 20$ lol

My drill doctor did a great job making bits shiny, but that was about all. They were good for about 1 or 2 uses. But then again, I'm notorious for buying cheap drills

This video pretty much confirms the subject matter of a Wes produced video isn't all that important. It's Wes's style that makes it worth watching. We all learned way too much about drill sharpening in the last two videos but I was happy to watch them cause Wes was doing it.

They both use a CBN wheel, which is an abrasive bonded on a metal wheel. They do not have to be dressed, but they do wear out.

Love the drawing! Always wondered with the Drill Doctor, or the Vevor one, how the wheel is actually kept to standard. As you pointed out in the last video, dressing the wheel is essential to keep it usable. Sharpening thick web, split point quality drills, not ones for drilling butter or at best cheese, does the Dill Doctor wear out after the first few?
