Lol, I wish I could reply to any of this, because you're going after some interesting points of discussion. The hazard of it being so late in the story is that everything that's left is Very Big Stuff. That said, death flags have been pretty devalued in this story thus far - look at Vernon! We'll have to wait and see how Mike does.

Welllllll fuck. There's a moment I look for at this point in the story, and I think it's here. Michael know's what's right and he knows what's 'necessary' - not yet understanding the impossible nature of what Luc and he can do, fully, not yet having tried again to meld the more esoteric Spark and Stanza the way Luc has Smoke and Star, and he has Vincent's and the Lucigentes souls. Presumably, he has the tools to win already, once he has the final revelation, and it will make the struggles and losses he is about to face very much bittersweet at best, relying as it does on Leire's understanding of the world and the benefit to Michael of bearing Sofia's soul, which is not Michael's understanding of souls and the world anymore (and that epigraph is as clear a warning on this decision and the type of loss it'll make as Leire could give). Anyway, ramble aside, this feels like the moment where Michael is going to make the 'wrong' choice. There's something I saw on youtube once or in a book, and it said that the character must have a truth and a lie, and near the end of the story he is mostly living in a 'true' way, a way that is appropriate to their improvement and what they needed to learn to live their life in a way they never could have at the start of the story. At the climax, the 'lie', the flawed model of the world is employed or almost employed and it is insufficient to achieving the objective they need. They have to either succeed and fully and ultimately reject it, or accept it and fall. I'm worried about your huge death flags at the end of this chapter, and Sobriquet's role in warning Michael, coming back to bite him through her. The way that this plays out to me, if Michael doesn't pull back in time, is that Sibyl's soul will be a hindrance to him, it's everything he feared and he gains nothing. Or else, he'll try and fail to obtain it, Sobriquet will die, and he'll find out that her half of the axis holds the truth that he needed to consciously learn, that he's been subconciously Jeorging all this time. What's worse, it'll be something Sobriquet didn't have to die for him to learn or achieve. Something about the greater nature of souls - the way Sword is Division, What is Spark? What is Stanza? What is Sobriquet? I think he needs to learn that to fuse them into one, and that 'my soul to the one' is going to be instrumental in beating Luc's chaotic zeitgeist of souls trapped in hell.
