I've only watched this once as a kid. The death of the horse traumatised me so much I've never wanted to see it again. I'm 43 now. Maybe it's time to get over it!!
This is a German made move from a German novel and doesn't translate very well to our sensitivities I think. Also the movie doesn't keep the message of the book in mind. The book speaks to the sorrow and loss that Bastian carries with him much more than the movie does. The movie also ends where the novel hits the mid point of it's plot. The sequel somewhat takes over at that point but strays quite a bit from the novel after that. Still this movie was also one of my favorite movies from my childhood and I also was scarred when his horse drowned in the swamp. Never have gotten over that.
