Like, I’ve obviously experienced periods like this, where you’re just sitting there staring at the blank canvas out of ideas? However, this one made me feel like I’d forgotten how to draw, anything! Felt so useless and scared because I’m a very ‘assignment’ oriented person and I just wasn’t fulfilling any items on the list of responsibilities I’ve given myself.
So, what did I do? I literally mentally prohibited myself from drawing ANYTHING for two weeks (hence the inactivity). Not even the 30-60 mins anatomy classes I’d been taking in the mornings, nor Still life.
Nothing.
Focused on journaling with the ‘Stream of consciousness method.’ Since I really can’t function or go a day without manifesting anything, even if it’s a doodle, a list, anything! on a piece of paper. Which really, helped get my uncensored feelings and thoughts out there. BUT ANYWAYS LETS NOT GO DOWN THAT RABBIT HOLE RIGHT NOW!! (￣▽￣;)
Basically, the fact that I wasn’t allowed to draw anything made me want to? This sounds so toxic, but I swear it literally did the trick for me!
Suddenly, I had so many ideas of things I wanted to draw and create. This didn’t happened right away, tho. It was a gradual itch that literally took me around 5 - 6 days to fully creep out. At first, it was just the feeling of wanting to doodle on a blank canvas. Then, since I didn’t give in... boom! All the ideas of what I could be drawing if I was allowed to. IT DOESNT MEAN I’m able to all of a sudden finish my pieces, because let’s be real... I still take forever to finish anything but I’m back at it again!
Honestly, I wanted to share this because I know there are so many ‘generic’ posts out there on how to overcome art book; ‘make yourself a cup of tea, take a bath, make yourself a happy playlist... etc.’ and it’s like bish, I already do these things without having to have an artblock. Wtf. Yeah, some of the tips might work for you? But personally, they just don’t for me.
Guess I really just felt like letting y’all know my honest mental process on what was going on and how I dealt with it; hopefully it’ll be somewhat useful.
Also, I don’t want this update to be super depressing, so I want recommend a few things that I’ve watched during this self art quarentine, LMAO;
I binged watched on Netflix —
♡ Crash Landing on You ( Korean Drama ) ; hella long, but so good. I love when the female protagonist is a bad boss bish.
♥︎ BeaStars ( Anime ) ; I finished it last night. I cannot explain... it’s so good. ALSO, Harus voice actress in English is the same as Kairi from Digimon and I was like feeeeelsss.
On Disney +
♡ Lion King (Live Action) - I actually loved it. I was very true to the original, and the feels hit home!
♥︎ Lion King (original) and Lion King 2. - Well, ummm... was already down that rabbit hole. Lol.
♡ Waking Sleeping Beauty ; it was entertaining but I found it SO Misogynistic. It’s a Disney documentary on the journey of their films but there were literally no women in the documentary and I know for a fact that there are so many women in the animation industry, it just made me a bit upset.
Anyways, I hope everyone’s safe!
& thank you forever for still sticking around! ♡
(& feel free to give any recommendations on, films, anime or even how you beat the artblock monster!)
