Coming soon! printed 5015 fans - and symmetrical version
🕑 Added 2024-03-01 06:51:29 +0000 UTCThis uses a 3 wire brushless motor meant for micro drones, so does complicate things a bit, but will simplify it all down for you.
Weight about 22~23grams (including screws), so about the same as a 5015
There is a small downside this is not as quiet as a 5015, even at similar air flow. but does allow a LOT more air than a 5015 6K rpm ( like gdstime), like 4~5times more, and symetrical setup
The large opening version should have less pressure but more airflow and totally non-standard shape (inspired by 4020 blower fans)
The smaller outlet model is based around a Delta fan case shape, and fits in the Apollo as is.
I did reduce the mounting holes size to M3, but will make an M4 hole size as well (standard on 5015)
ONE PSU (20~40USD)
Does need a 5V PSU, right now testing one I had on hand that was 25watt, but to play safe will likely need a higher one to run more than one fan
per motor: count about 20watt (4amp) to play super safe, 3amp/15watt is still safe, 2.5amp/12.5amp is borderline.
- meanwell LRS-100-5 about 20USD
- meanwell LRS-100-5 about 40USD
I'm currently testing one fan with a 25watt PSU and nothing melted yet, only short 30seconds runs so far, will test longer run eventually
One ESC per fan (2 USD per ESC)
This needs an ESC (electronic speed controller) per fan, which will be powered by the 5v PSU, have one wire go to the printer board, but I'm thinking a dedicated Pi Pico ($4) will be better to put ESC, pico and PSU in one neat enclosure. Pico would be connected to the pi via USB or UART (I assume that's possible, but not 100% sure yet)
Motor (3~5USD per motor) and Screws
this small motor is perfect, but has tiny screws, and to keep the fan case compact, you'll need to get extra screws, four M1.4x2 or M1.4x3 (not yet sure) and four M2x3mm (best would be M2x3 countersunk screws )
Will require soldering wires to the ESC.
Motor rotation is defined by the wire orders, swapping two of the three wires will reverse it, so a symmetrical fan is possible.
I have grand plans for much later, and that is build a shroud with the fan integrated into the body.
In the shorter term will make an Apollo with symmetrical duct output (this will be on a request basis initially.) which was until now only possible with 5020 blower fans
also forgot to mention this at 30% power provides the same cooling power as 6K 5015 (average fast 5015 models out there). there is a down side is that even at 30% it is noisier than a 5015 at 100%, But you can push this to 100% power.
On my precision/jewelry scale a GDStime 6K dual ball bearing 24v at 3mm away was doing roughly 3grams of pressure, and that fan at 30% doing the same.
At 100% this was doing about 15grams of pressure (of course sounds like a small airplane, but that's a lot of cooling power), so a single fan is plenty enough. but two fan at lower rpm will be quieter and providing similar cooling.
The fan is almost ready, but want to make a few more test before posting all the final hardware.
if you don't care about waiting and want to get the stuff, and possibly have to get a different better ESC (though the one linked below does work), everything else should be fine
- motor aliexpress - (1 out of 4 didn't sound nice, small rattling, but was functional, so keep that in mind that QA is not great)
- ESC - aliexpress, cheap but works, this one is programable: ESC XP-12A clone
- M1.4 Screws - aliexpress M1.4x3 or M1.4x2 OR M1.4x3 countersunk TORX (or any other M4.x3 countersunk) not sure what will be best yet (waiting for deliveries)
- M2x3mm Hex Socket Countersunk - aliexpress OR M2x3 Flat Head countersunk TORX - aliexpress or M2x3 Flat Head countersunk TORX - aliexpress
- 18amp meanwell - LRS-100-5:5v/18amp - amazon OR 60amp meanwell - LRS-350-5 - amazon
edit: finally managed to read the current usage, spikes at 2.5amp with a single fan (then settles at 1.6amp), going from 0 to 100%. so to play it safe I would consider 3amp per fan. if I add some friction it spikes at 3.5amp, so 4amp per fan to play super safe. If I add even more holding power it just stalls and ESC goes into safety shutdown (I guess).
I wouldn't recommend it, but if you want to risk it, meanwell has a 5amp 25watt PSU, LRS-25-5. Which now I know is totally fine if running a single fan, but very borderline for two fans
