If you're looking for historical perspectives on the war, It might be worth covering the history of Crimea's relationship to Ukraine and Russia. The annexation in 2014 is often presented as Putin's original sin against Ukraine, but in fact the Crimeans had been wanting to break away since the early '90s. The history of Ukraine as a state would also be interesting. My understanding is that it was basically cobbled together in the early Soviet period, but would be helpful to know more.
