The "value for money" point, though "basic" as Alex put it, is a good one to keep in mind. Over here in the US, the unions sink lots of money and labor into getting Democrats elected. In discussions about this on the left (at least in my experience) it is rarely pointed out that there are alternative ways those resources could be used, even besides setting up a third party, that would give the unions more independence.
