This programme takes in everything from the formation of the old Upper Volta state by French imperialism to Sankaras radicalisation, rise to power and ultimately his downfall. It is a heroic but flawed example of a sincere man giving his life for his nation but can teach us much the revolution he led and the wider implications of the radical officer movements of the post war world.
Outro music is from 'Underground System' by Fela Kuti

Thanks for this episode, Alex, I thought your discussion of Sankara's downfall was very insightful. I was especially interested in the role of feudal chieftans that you discussed. Could you recommend some sources to learn more about that specifically? And generally sources for understanding more about politics in post-colonial Africa? I'm especially interested in Nigeria
