How Trailer Music Tricks You

Endgame, Game of Thrones, that new Godzilla movie, I really liked Hellboy, Shazam! was awesome, and now there's a new Star Wars trailer.
It's a lot to digest, but after doing some googling, the world of trailer music can quickly become a MASSIVE rabbit hole. I actually ended up cutting things out of this video just because I didn't want it to go for too long.
If you have a favorite trailer, I'd strongly suggest that you check out some of the links in the description of the video, because there are a LOT of pieces of music that just get recycled over and over and over and over again. It's really is fascinating!

That's FASCINATING I've been looking up copyright law for other countries/places, like the EU and Japan and China, and it's amazing how much of a difference there is across the world. Like I just couldn't imagine a place where copyright law didn't exist, and writing a piece of music that was successful would immediately mean that a giant company was seeing ALL the revenue from that. Do you have any clips of the examples you mentioned? I'd love to check it out!

So here's something about music licensing that's Quite Interesting in a useless way. In Japan, from what I can gather, when a channel licenses a movie or TV show to broadcast, they also end up having the broadcasting rights to the soundtrack associated with that property. This means that shows made in house by the channel will draw from a catalogue of music that INCLUDES the music from movies or TV shows. So you'll be sitting around watching some kind of variety show or light news show and suddenly "Beauty and the Beast" music starts playing, or something else so ingrained in you head that it will elicit a specific reaction to the segment. These types of shows are made on a weekly if not daily turnaround so this happens a lot. There isn't time to compose original music for every segment, so they just pull from the library in a "throw it at the wall and see what sticks" kind of way. And then there was "Yuri!!! On Ice", which was broadcast on AsahiTV. AsahiTV is the main free-to-air broadcaster of figure skating in the country, and the producers were able to get the okay to use a lot of logos and set-ups that are hallmarks of figure skating broadcasting to the general public in Japan. Flash-forward a couple of years, and now AsahiTV is using music originally composed for the "Yuri!!! On Ice" show is being used by AsahiTV during the skating season in their programming. If it's used subtly I guess it can be effective like the trailers you mention, but for someone who listens to enough soundtrack music (or hell, even just something from your favourite movie happens to be used that day) it can throw you out of the moment pretty much immediately. Obviously this is not at all how it works in Western countries, so it's something I find curious. Thanks for all your hard work!
