That's a lil tid bit about Jones' involvement in the cult, which he at the time doesn't even know is a cult at all. He writes the experience of as weird and Max as far kinkier than her sweet & pure exteriour let on.
It's basically Jones' first taste and partial initiation. The cult tests his virility and how well he's suited to either join, be deemed unfit to join, or better yet, become a worthy sacrifice.
The cult deals in extreme forms of emotion, thats how they summon entities and powers and all that. The emotions can be anything really, but the stronger they are felt, the more power is gathered/emitted.
