The trading activity is slightly easier to comprehend if you realize they aren't buying and sellings goods on hand, but future commitments to buy and sell. So Louis and Billy Ray can enter the market by "selling," because they are promising to sell a quantity of Frozen Concentrated Orange Juice (FCOJ) in the future. After acquiring a sufficient quantity of "sells" at the inflated high price caused by the Dukes' run on the market, they stop selling and just wait for the price to turn around. After the crop report kicks off the selling panic, they can match up their "sells" with offsetting buys at the deflated low price. Once they've "bought" off an equal number of "sells," they're out of the market with a huge profit, because they sold high in the early going, after which they bought low at the end of trading. The crop report indicates whether the crops had been damaged by winter weather, leading to a scarcity which drives prices up, or whether they came though undamaged, in which case there should be plenty of supply, and thus a lower price. By feeding the Dukes the wrong info in the fake report, they made them think the crop was damaged, thus scarce (and higher priced). Once the actual report comes that the crop was not damaged, the true price is much lower, thus the panic to sell.
