This may be writing a better movie, but I think you're misinterpreting the way the ghosts work. The way I see it, the ghosts are enslaved on several levels - they are trapped in the prisons of their deaths, such that their appearance is tied to the trauma that created them. The wife has the IV because her death in the hosiptal takes her away from her family (but if she's the withered lover, why doesn't she die of cancer - lung cancer caused by smoking if you want to make it her fault), the torn prince has the bat because his future was cut short because of a crime, the princess has the blood because it's related to her suicide in the bathtub. The ghosts themselves are all over the spectrum (I think Matthew Lillard's character says something like that), but they are all angry because they have been enslaved and forced to power the machine. However, as slaves, they have their own agenda. That's why some of the ghosts want to murder the people in the house and some want to ignore them. They're also not that good at planning, which is why some of them don't figure out they can go around the glass. The spells make them do things that they don't want to do, so when they're broken, they get to do what they want. When the house is destroyed, the wife is no longer a ghost because her trauma's been resolved, so she isn't trapped by the circumstances of her death anymore, so she doesn't look the same way. The other ghosts still are, but now they can pursue their own agendas.

I think I know why they included the glasses: The original 13 Ghosts (1960) had a gimmick where the audience had to use a 3D-glasses like viewer to see the ghosts. This is probably a call back to that.
