Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy? It was on cartoon network where two kids befriend (enslave) the Grim Reaper after beating him in a limbo contest for Billy's pet hamster's soul. It's a really good show, really funny and not afraid to push what was allowed on TV at the time.

I am so glad I'm not the only one that immediately knew the song from Eli just saying "pea beneath your bed". Voltaire has a song titled "Riding a Black Unicorn Down the Side of an Erupting Volcano While Drinking from a Chalice Filled with the Laughter of Small Children" and if you think that's weird that's fair, but also he's extremely cool and a genuinely charming guy* who's kinda just the final evolution form of a theater kid. He has a YouTube channel where he just talks about cool home decor stuff for weird goth people, which again, weird - sure, but the wholesome kind of weird. I'm sure Eli would get along with him, at least until he tried to lick him. What I really enjoy is the twisted wonder and joy that Jack takes in the discovery of something new that he doesn't understand and the peril that leads him too. One thing that makes me feel less goth is the fact that I feel like a lot of the "decorating with Halloween stuff" and "everything is black" aesthetics can be a bit tacky, but on the other hand, it IS better than that modern "everything is simplified and off-white" that's annoyingly popular.

There are also a bunch of sub-subcultures based on aesthetic and what music people listen to, at least in terms of punk and Goth (like rivet heads, romantic goths, pastel goth, cyber goth) . Not sure about how much emo branches out.

Nah, I've listened to a lot of musicals. Nightmare Before Christmas is pretty mid. Like, I don't actually think it's HORRIBLE, but I do think it's wildly overrated, especially when it comes to people who want to be a bit darkly-counterculture. Same with a lot of Tim Burton stuff in general, which Nightmare Before Christmas BARELY IS, by the way. We need more people crediting Henry Selik for directing when a lot of people think it's Burton.

I don't know how I feel knowing immediately that the opening song must be "When You're Evil", because I spent so much of my childhood/teen years listening to Voltaire. I am not wealthy or in a convenient enough social centre to be full-goth, but I've always been a bit goth. HOWEVER, I despise Nightmare Before Christmas just because of how boring yet over-rated it is. GET BETTER TASTE IN MOVIES.

Okay, song that must open this movie is When You're Evil by Voltaire, and that track (and about half his discography) is NOT meant to be taken seriously, it's comic goth. He has one on the same album where he tells you not to out your fellow goths by saying their real name at the vampire club. He has a whole album of songs about Star Trek and Star Wars called Bitrekual.
