i mean the thing is that one interpritation of his rebellion is that he disagreed with Gods plan for Salvation where God wanted obedience, Lucifer wanted man to be free and earn it by good deeds alone. also the fact that if folks see the snake as lucifer tempting mankind to eat the fruit of Knowledge. he becomes more like Prometheus. As was stated in the movie, knowledge is evil in religion.

One of the reasons The Exorcist holds up so well is that they at least pay lip service to ruling out physical causes for the “possession.” The priest even talks about psychic abilities, which was a thing that science was still kinda working on at the time (MK Ultra, etc). I remember the book actually going way more into that and being more agnostic about the conclusion. But it’s been a while.
