Okay, Eli, I hate to be "that guy who has watched Kindergarten Cop and retained any information from it," but there actually WAS dialogue in that film where one of the kids asks him why he talks that way and Arnold's character tells him that he's from Austria.

An excellent desecration of an execrable film … with one exception. Ryu has neither a long 'e' sound nor an 'ai' sound. The only vowel is the (long) u at the end. If you want to know what it is supposed to sound like, plug リュウ into Google Translate and click the speak icon. Good luck saying that, though: I studied Japanese for years and I still can't completely suppress a vowel sound between the 'r' and 'y'. (It's an odd name to be sure. In the original game, it was written 隆 [filial piety], which would ordinarily be pronounced 'Takashi'. But the furigana indicate it should be pronounced like 竜 [dragon].)

I worked (wardrobe) on a made for TV film (for HBO) with Raul Julia in it. He was very intense and focused. It was a dreadful shoot and no fun at all so I don’t know if he was a nice guy or not. Nobody knew who he was then. But I knew him from theatre.... from a televised “Shakespeare in the Park” “King Lear” where he was GREAT as the bastard Edmund, and from an equally amazing performance on B’way as Macheath in “Threepenny Opera”.  “Florida Straits” is the title of the film. It’s so bad! I don’t even think it’s on disc. First off a couple quick notes. Sagat is played by a Native American (not a bad actor he's been in Avatar and Dances with Wolves), don't get me started on the Hawaiian playing a sumo wrestler that should be Japanese, Zangief isn't played by a Russian, Ryu is played by a Chinese American, and of course Cammy isn't Brittish. Bison isn't Thai, he's either British or Irish depending on the story. That is the nationalities they fucked up. Fey Long is trademarked by the Bruce Lee family so he can't be represented by any actor. And the actor who played T-Hawk was actually a Native American, Cherokee to be exact.
