Cheryl wasn’t familiar with the business whose garbage Ethan was busy rummaging around in; the building itself was nondescript, a boring brickface office that blended in with the other small tech companies situated downtown. The ‘No Trespassing' signs that were displayed on the walls were pretty clear, but as far as high-value targets went she doubted there was anything worthwhile for thieves to steal besides a copy machine and a water cooler.

“Look, they can’t all be winners. But it was fun, right? Didn’t it get a little exciting at the end there?” His hopeful tone didn’t do much to convince his friend, who just tapped her foot with an unchanging expression.
The pair had known each other for years, growing up on the same street as kids, attending high school together, and eventually graduating from the same university just a few months prior. They had moved in together to ease some of the burden of living on their own, and aside from a few of the normal hiccups that came with cohabitating their friendship hadn’t suffered in the slightest. They were similar in a lot of ways; introverted but passionate about their hobbies, Ethan had a slightly more adventurous streak than Cheryl did… which meant that he should have known she wouldn’t be onboard with tonight’s activities. Ethan frowned and let his shoulders drop before offering his friend an apologetic look.
“I’m sorry, okay?” He said while he fiddled with the taped-up box, the only thing of interest that he managed to haul out.
Cheryl sighed and pushed her glasses up the bridge of her nose.
“We’re not teenagers anymore, Ethan. I have an interview for an internship at ZatebaTech in the morning! Do you know how competitive those positions are? I can’t exactly phone in from a jail cell.”
Her job prospects post-graduation had been much more promising than Ethan’s, the disparity between her computer science degree and his digital art degree showing itself in spades now that they had to make it on their own. Late nights spent breaking the law wasn’t something she could afford right now, but to Ethan it was all harmless fun. Still, he felt bad that he could have jeopardized his friend’s interview if things had gone wrong. He could tell that Cheryl wasn’t mad, just annoyed, but his nerves were making him pick away at the tape that covered the box in his hands while they talked.
“Yeah yeah, I get ya. No more late-night theft. Next time we can play it safe and stick to misdemeanors, how’s that?”

“The most I’ll go for is some light vandalism,” she said as she finally took a seat on the couch opposite Ethan. “Nothing worse than an egging.”

“Designation L4MP. WARNING! Contents include one (1) anomalous entity,” Ethan began to read aloud. “Properties are as follows: Finished statements must begin with the words ‘I wish’ in order to yield results. Three (3) wishes per day, per user. Wishes made by the user cannot target the user. Wishes cannot be used to reverse the effects of previous wishes.”
“Sounds like a gag gift,” Cheryl said.
“What? A D.I.Y. genie’s lamp?” Ethan scoffed while holding the cube up. “It doesn’t even look the part. This is something that a kid would make in shop class.”
