🕑 Added 2022-01-02 17:01:02 +0000 UTCHappy New Year!
2022 has begun and it’s the start of Drawing Season at The FAA Collective!
We have very special content coming your way to celebrate the New Year, and we begin by releasing one of our favourite Art History Lectures for free.
"What is drawing?" Was originally recorded at the FAA Florence campus last year, and we believe it makes the perfect intro to all of our drawing themed content!
Click here for to view the Full Art History Lecture: What is Drawing? w/ Tom Richards!
Over the next couple months, we will be sharing with you:
- Exclusive Art History Lectures given by the Florence Academy’s Assistant Director and resident art historian Tom Richards, with the participation of FAA Faculty members from the Florence Campus: Vitaliy Shtanko, Nicholas Chaundy, Tanvi Pathare and Ramiro Sanchez.
- An informative Materials demo all about one of our preferred mediums by FAA alumna Jessica Keiser.
- Inspiring Spotlight on Art Newsletters featuring FAA graduates from around the world.
- A brand new Book review featuring Principal instructor Simone Moritz on what is regarded as a true Anatomy/Figure drawing bible!
At The Florence Academy of Art, drawing correctly from nature is a requisite skill to good painting and sculpture.
Learning to draw requires learning to see correctly. From the moment the eye is trained to see the subject before it, students become capable of rendering whatever they see or imagine. For this reason, the Intensive Drawing curriculum for first year painting students, the Advanced Drawing curriculum for second year painting students, and Sculpture Drawing are designed to strengthen the student's visual relationship with three-dimensional form, teaching them to render the human figure accurately, and eventually to paint, sculpt, or wok in non-traditional media, like digital. Drawing is also an art form, and many professional artists create finished works in charcoal, graphite and sanguine.
To cover such a wide topic we have reached out to several FAA Alums to speak on the subject and the result is an amazing variety of artworks, techniques and philosophies.
We hope you enjoy learning all about Drawing!
Materials w/ Jessica Keiser - Toning paper with charcoal powder
It wouldn’t be Drawing Season without one of our preferred mediums: Charcoal.
We had the pleasure of receiving our brand new Materials demo by FAA graduate Jessica Keiser.
In this video we learn all about charcoal powder as Jessica demonstrates how to hand tone paper and drawing techniques she uses while creating her own work with this versatile material.

Books are an immense source of knowledge and inspiration in our community. During Drawing Season, we will be releasing a brand new Book review by principal instructor of the intensive drawing program at FAA Simone Olivia Moritz, as well as a very special article featuring FAA Founder and Director Daniel Graves on his discovery of the original lithographs of the “Cours de Dessin” (Drawing Course) produced by Charles Bargue in the 19th century.

INTERVIEWS - Spotlight on Art
Featured artworks from above left to right: The Girl with the Black Fur by Marco Franco, Puzzle by Eric J. Drummond, Portrait of Camilla by Justas Varpucanskis and Jess by Phoebe Hicks.
Get inspired by the words of our artists as they explain the story behind their artworks!
This month we had the pleasure to interview FAA graduates of the painting program Marco Franco, Justas Varpucanskis, Phoebe Hicks and Eric J. Drummond about some personal drawing projects. Needless to say, learning about the work from the artists who made it adds a deeper level of appreciation for these portraits and their passion for figurative realism.
