🕑 Added 2021-10-23 16:01:01 +0000 UTCDear Patrons,
Today’s Book Review comes from UK sculptor, Poppy Field, a graduate of the FAA Sculpture Program, and former Art History lecturer and instructor of Art Business, at FAA. Poppy also graduated from London’s Courtauld Institute of Art where she studied Art History. She has selected the exhibition catalogue, ‘Bronze 2012”, produced by the Royal Academy of Arts, London, that features an introduction by the exhibition’s curator, David Ekserdjian, and essays by leading experts.
Recommended to anyone seeking a complete guide to the world of bronze and brass artworks, Poppy explains that the beautifully written essays, the artwork images, and relative historical and geographical context, make "Bronze 2012" an important source of knowledge. To quote the Wall Street Journal in its review of the catalogue: “The discovery of magnificent ancient bronze sculptures that spent millennia on the seabed and emerged unscathed is just one factor to have fed the continued fascination with this prized artistic medium. This sumptuous book examines bronze’s earliest beginnings in North Africa, the Middle East, and China, celebrating its durability and variability."
The catalogue is exhaustive in its overview of the periods in which works of art in bronze flourished: ancient Greece and Rome, the European Renaissance, and the late 19th century through the modern era, and its inclusion of all the major artists who worked in the medium, from Ghiberti, Donatello, Cellini, and, later, Giambologna, to Rodin, Boccioni, Picasso, Johns, Giacometti, and Moore to Beuys and Bourgeois.
We hope you enjoy this review!
