Tutorial: Twisted Rope
🕑 Added 2022-04-24 14:22:12 +0000 UTCHello! Thanks to everyone that's stuck around during the lull in content. I was busy with a few different projects at work that were overlapping on deliveries as well as moving. Hoping to have for time going forward and get into some similar topics such as yarn, knitting, knitting, knots and other techniques.
Step by step tutorial showing the process of creating a highly detailed closeup of a rope.
Procedural modeling of the twisted curves using sweep SOPs, extra detail achieved through a displacement map generated using COPs. Stray fiber strands created using KineFX for curling and twisting as well as some VEX to dial in noise and randomness.
This ended up being a longer recording than I planned as quite a bit of aspects are covered. Please feel free to look at the chapters and break up the viewing of the tutorial.
The duration hopefully isn't intimidating and you can think of this as a 4 part lesson:
1) modeling the twisted rope
2) rendering, lighting, shading
3) creating the stray strands hair system
4) texture map creation in COPs
