I've had the same thing happen, really. It's a habit I picked up and I've got all these collections of books I won't ever read again, miniatures for wargames I'll never play again, and countless bits of paper with notes and scribbles on them, as well as some old computer stuff that I need to go through as well. But I've slowly started whittling it down. I tend to use "If I'm moving to a new place, is this something that will be displayed or used? If not, it needs to either go to storage, or be tossed out. 90% of the time, it can be tossed out or turned over to recycling or Goodwill (Especially the glassware and plates.. Gawd.. My parents got SO MUCH OF IT XD )

I also have family members that gathered sooo much interesting stuff. I fear it rubbed off on me as I currently have a stack of boxes that once contained electronics, and ancient computer parts stuffed under an old desk. Good luck decluttering, and hope you might have some advice about it later.

My father was a Chemical Engineer but his interests spanned virtually any field of study. In later years he became fascinated with home computers, starting with a VIC-20. Since I worked as a Systems Analyst, he frequently asked me for help with hardware and software he wanted to learn. He had no fear of the soldering iron and would build interfacing devices he had heard about. He took over my bedroom when I bought my first house and my sister's old bedroom after she moved out. He also enjoyed puttering in a workshop attached to the garage. When he passed away in 2004 he left literally tons to excavate and sort. It took my brother, sister and brother in law months to winnow away the wheat and the chaff. Books? He and Mom were both heavy readers. I brought home as much as I could and put more in a storage unit (that is costing me too much a month). My attic now resembles their place. (* sigh *) I'm glad I'm retired now to start my own excavations...

Watching old shows that were outside my normal interests was something I did while recovering from a breakdown. Everything from black and white Sherlock Holmes movies to the Brady Bunch variety shows. It was only one piece of a complicated plan, but it worked surprisingly well, and so I hope it does the same for you.
