TBH, I've only recently been introduced to the dog-people version of gnolls. Just powered through (and deeply enjoyed) the four volumes of Pirateaba's The Wandering Inn available on audible. I still think of Gnolls in the Terry Pratchett sense. The wiry-muscled, stone-goblin variants with giant rubbish heaps on their back due to their tremendous hoarding and OCD tendencies. Now that I see them drawn, though... I'm pretty sold on hyena gnolls.
