Chapter Four
Without his phone or watch, Derek didn't know for sure how long it'd been since his last, but by his best guess, his next contraction hit some fifteen minutes after Baxter and Emily went inside. By then, the now very red and sweaty (despite the cool, early morning temp and his lack of clothing) laboring thirty-four year old, had gotten used to the “build up” that came before so initially, the involuntary tightening of his bulbous midsection didn't take him by surprise.
“Contraction…” he said aloud. “To be expec, oooh fuuuuuck!!!” He suddenly groaned as his belly's latest bout of clenching ramped up, soon far exceeding the intensity of the last. “OoooOooh!!!” Derek groaned again as he tore his hands from the pockets of the robe, leaned forward and placed them on his knees.
In the process, the robe spread wide open, exposing almost all of his now heaving belly. Derek didn't have the time, energy or wherewithal to worry about that though… This contraction was intense.
Same as before, the pressure and pain started at his lower back, but quickly worked its way all around his bulging midsection. Derek tried his best to put the breathing techniques he'd learned to use, but for the next twenty or so seconds, all he could do was loudly moan and groan as he felt his big baby boy being wedged deeper and tighter between his already aching hips.
After a minute of painful clenching, Derek's belly finally began to relax again. Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for the rest of his body… The latest contraction had taken a lot out of him, so he remained hunched over, with his now shaking hands still braced on his knees for another minute before gingerly straightening back up as much as he could, not quite reaching his full height.
While the contraction had ended, Derek found himself groaning again as inexplicably, the pressure within his bloated form continued to increase… He worried for a second that he was about to have another contraction already, but then he realized that the pressure he was now experiencing felt different, yet oddly familiar at the same time.
“OoooOooh…” he shakily exhaled as both of his hands went to his lower back, the palms pushing deeply into it, thrusting his now low-hanging belly further out in front of him, slightly more than it had come to reach before it'd dropped. In the process, his robe opened, falling behind his pregnancy, fully exposing it.
Despite all his pain and discomfort, not to mention the fact that he was showing off a lot of bulbous skin, Derek remained hard as a rock. Speaking of his erection, it suddenly twitched, smacking up against the underside of his belly with such force, he heard the contact it made with his taut skin even over his latest, loud moan. The twitch was so strong, it caused his son, whose head he'd inadvertently knocked, to kick hard. Very hard, right against Derek's left lung, knocking what little breath he had in it out.
“Jesus!” He grunted as he leaned forward again, almost losing his balance as the new yet familiar pressure continued to build. “Sorry, buddy… Didn't mean to, oooh!” He moaned. “Do that, I swear!” He breathlessly assured his son.
When his honesty was “rewarded” with another strong kick, Derek decided he'd waddled around the yard enough. He'd yet to be summoned back in by Elaine, but he wasn't about to let that stop him now… He knew something was happening, what exactly, he could say, but whatever it was, Derek didn't want it to finish happening out in the yard, so as soon as he caught enough of his breath, he slowly straightened back up again and started lumbering towards the house.
With his soon-to-be born (relatively speaking, anyway) son now lower than ever, his large head wedged tightly between his hips, Derek moved at a very slow and pronounced waddle. Each and every small and slightly unsteady step he took, seemed to work the baby that much lower as the pressure within continued to increase.
The new pressure seemed to be coming from his actual stomach, which suddenly gave a loud and long rumble, making it sound (and feel) like he really needed to use the bathroom again. The need to vacate his cramped and constipated bowels grew stronger and stronger as Derek continued his arduous trek, his house, and more importantly, the bathroom, not seeming to get any closer, despite the (very slow) progress he was making.
The actively laboring thirty-four year old honestly didn't know if he was going to make it back inside? Derek really hoped he would, because unlike Baxter, he was not OK with “doing his business” in the backyard, which he now very much feared was about to be the case…
Just when he thought they never would, finally, the stairs leading back up to his deck were in literal reach. Derek had just taken a firm hold on the banister and raised his left leg to begin his return ascent, when he suddenly grimaced in pain again as his stomach really cramped… With his leg already in the air, now wasn't the time to stop, so he pushed on while tightly squeezing his ass cheeks together, trying desperately to not push from between them.
Despite how tightly he was squeezing, a loud, long and shrill fart still managed to work its way out between his cheeks from his now loosened hole. The release helped dissipate some of the great internal pressure he was under, but not for long… As what remained of the trumpeting toot left his hot, tired, aching and bloated body, Derek felt something move inside him and this time, it wasn't his son.
“Oooh, shit…” he moaned as something moved within his guts. Something substantial… “Liv! Elaine!” He shouted up at the house as he stood there frozen in place on the bottom step.
When neither his wife or midwife came to his aid, Derek didn't know what to do? He worried if he took another step, he was going to shit himself but that if he didn't take one, he might anyway?! So with a mighty roar as he forced all the strength he could down into his legs, he continued his climb. Just two more steps to go…
“Come on, man…” Derek grumbled to himself. “You can… do this!”
Even as he said so, he had his doubts… It took nearly another minute for him to get back onto the deck but eventually, he proved himself right. Once he had, still holding super tightly onto the banister for support, Derek let out a big and deep sigh of relief. As he did, he also released his tight grip on his ass. Big mistake…
The second he unclenched, another massive and massively loud fart burst from his hole, which was quickly followed by another and then another. All of a sudden, gas that was increasingly warm, was blasting out of Derek at an alarming rate, causing him to moan, both in relief and concern.
“Jesus!” He said again as he looked down at his belly once he'd finally stopped farting.
As he did so, he heard a door opening so naturally, he looked up. Very much to his chagrin, Derek's backdoor (his home's, anyway,) remained closed, so with another groan, he looked to the right and saw Charlie stepping back out onto his deck again.
“Everything OK, big guy?” His neighbor asked as he quickly and easily descended his steps and then rushed over to his side of their shared fence. “I heard yelling…”
Derek smiled and nodded, knowing he wasn’t fooling the older man. “Everything’s… fine,” he just managed to get out before he grimaced as his stomach churned again. “I just, oooh!” He groaned, right hand flying to that side of his pregnancy as it clenched fiercely.
Before he realized what he was doing, Derek was leaning forward again. If ever he felt like he was about to explode, it was at that very moment.
“Fuuuuuuuck me!” He moaned as instinctively, he took his right hand from his belly and reached behind him, lifting the back of his robe, fully exposing his pregnancy-fattened ass to his bewildered neighbor. “I think I… Think I’m about to…”
Derek had never been more embarrassed in his entire life, but he would be soon. He thought for sure he was about to shit himself right there on the deck, in front of Charlie, who looked as shocked, confused and concerned as he did. As Derek “stood” there moaning, groaning and panting, another series of farts, now staccato, started blasting out of his hole.
Charlie grimaced. “Fuck, dude… Are you OK?!”
Derek rather needlessly shook his head. Obviously, he wasn’t OK! He was far from it!
“Need…” he grunted out. “Liv, or…”
Before he was able to get his blasted midwife’s name out, more hot air blasted out his backdoor and this time, the expulsion sounded slightly juicy… Charlie’s eyes widened even more as he took in his bulbous, laboring neighbor’s awkwardly hunched over form. He tried not to stare at Derek’s ass but he couldn’t take his eyes off the pregnancy-fattened rump, which continued to produce some rather unpleasant sounds and smells.
“Lemme help!” Charlie said as he grabbed onto two posts and proceeded to easily jump the fence as Derek watched.
“What're you…” he groaned. “No! Just… Just stay over…” he tried to get out.
But his less encumbered neighbor was already there. “I'll go get Liv,” Charlie said as he bounded up Derek's steps, having to squeeze past him on the top.
Derek groaned and shook his head as he lowered his gaze back to his belly. Somehow, it looked even bigger now.
This couldn't be happening. Charlie wasn't actually coming to his “rescue,” was he? Derek was mortified then quickly became even more so as his belly audibly churned again, louder than the last time. Loud enough to be heard over Charlie knocking on the backdoor.
“Just open it!” Derek shouted at him.
“Are you sure?” Charlie called over his shoulder as he continued to knock. “I don't wanna scare the ladies…”
Derek groaned as the pressure within him continued to ramp up, as did his annoyance. If Charlie was there to “help” him, why was he worried about “scaring the ladies?!” Screw them!
“Yes, I'm sure!” He yelled as he cautiously tottered forward, finally releasing the tight hold he had on the banister as he just barely managed to start gingerly making his way across the deck under his own power.
“Liv..?” Charlie called as he slid the door open. “It's Charlie… Derek is, um… I think he could use some help!”
“No shit!” The laboring thirty-four year old muttered as he cupped his pregnancy to keep it from rocking which it very much wanted to do despite how slowly he was moving.
“We're coming!” Liv called.
“About fucking time…” Derek muttered again.
“Here we are!” His wife said as cheerily as she and Elaine stepped onto the deck, each holding a mug of coffee. “Sorry, we were just chatting,” she explained as she smiled up at Charlie, whom Derek now wanted to punch more than ever. “How are you?”
“I'm great!” Charlie smiled back. “Your husband on the other hand…” he chuckled and shook his head as he stepped back to give Liv a better view of Derek, who was still struggling to make his way across the deck.
“Oh, babe!” Liv said, her free hand flying up in front of her mouth. “Are you…”
“Need to… use the… bathroom… NOW!” Derek grunted out. “So either… help me, or… get outta my… damn way!”
“Tell me what's going on, Derek,” Elaine said as she came up beside him and “helped” usher him along by placing his left hand on his ass, which remained out in the open. “Tell me what you're feeling…”
“Like I'm about to shit myself!” Derek somehow managed to get out all in one breath, leaving himself gasping for air.
“Has your water broken yet?” The midwife asked.
He shook his head, sending sweat flinging off of it. He was about to say no but when Derek opened his mouth, instead of a word, another groan came out as he suddenly stopped waddling and hunched forward again.
“Oh God…” he moaned. “So much… pressure!”
“What's wrong with him, Elaine?!” Liv asked, clearly starting to panic. “Is he alright? Is the baby OK?!”
“Daddy and baby are both fine,” Elaine assured, offering the worried Mommy-to-be a kind smile.
“Ugh… I gotta… gotta go!” Derek groaned again as he forced himself back upright. “Help me, please!” He begged.
“Here ya go, big guy…” Charlie said as he rushed around to Derek's otherwise and wrapped his arm around his shoulders, locking his right hand under his right, sweaty armpit for support. “Lean on me… I, oooh!” He grunted as Derek did just that. “I got you!”
“Hold on a second…” Elaine said before they could continue forward.
They were almost to the backdoor. Just a few more hobbling steps, then Derek would be inside, where he'd then have to take several more before he got to the bathroom, but with Charlie's much needed (not necessarily wanted) support, he just might be able to make it.
“No!” Derek groaned. “Come on, let's… go! Inside, now! Pleeeeease!” He pleaded.
“Derek, you need to just let it out,” Elaine said from his other side.
“What?!” He scoffed as he whipped his head over to glare at her. “I am not about to shit myself in front of you and…”
“That's right,” the midwife cut him off in a condescending tone. “You're not about to shit yourself.”
Derek scoffed again. “Yes, I…”
“No. Your water is about to break,” Elaine continued. “That's what's causing the pressure you're feeling. Now go ‘head and let it happen,” she nodded.
“No way! Not out here on the deck! Not in front of… Charlie!” He huffed and rolled his eyes. “And Liv!”
“Someone's gonna see it happen, ‘cause I hate to break it to you, but I can tell now that you're not gonna make it to the bathroom,” Elaine shook her head. “So you might as well let it happen out here. The clean up will be easier,” she shrugged.
Derek's eyes went wide with indignation. “You're worried about the clean up?! I…”
“What're you worried about, Derek?!” Elaine cut him off with a huff of her own. “You're out here with your belly and ass exposed!”
She had him there, but still… “Yeah, but I…”
“Derek!” Liv cried. “Listen to Elaine and stop being so ridiculous!”
Ridiculous?! Derek wasn't being ridiculous, he was incredulous! He couldn't believe what he was hearing from either woman. As such, he whipped his head in the other direction to glare at his wife, further soaking Charlie, whose shirt was already absorbing sweat produced by his overheated, overburdened body.
It was very possible Elaine was right about him not being able to make it to the bathroom. In fact, it was likely, but Derek still wanted to try, and now they were just standing there arguing, wasting precious time…
He wasn't about to go down without a fight. Not if he could help it. Unfortunately, as it would turn out, he couldn't…
“Fuck the clean up!” Derek suddenly shouted. “I don't care about that! What I…”
“Come on, man…” Charlie chimed in. “No need to be embarrassed,” he shook his head. “It's totally natural! When Emily's water…”
“Respectfully, Charlie!” Derek interrupted. “As much as I don't care about the clean up, I really don't care to hear about your wife's water breaking! Since no one seems to get or care what I care about, please, just shut up and let me tell you!” He shouted again. “What I care about is not…” he suddenly paused for a second and then groaned.
The immense pressure he was already experiencing in his gut and bowels suddenly increased tenfold. Derek knew he'd missed his opportunity to try and make it to the bathroom. His water was about to break right then and there.
“No…” he moaned as he started farting again without meaning to. “No,” he repeated. “No, no, no!” He wailed over his increasingly wet sounding flatulence.
And then just as suddenly, Derek wasn't farting anymore. No, all of a sudden, Derek was spurting… Now, instead of air, hot, slightly sticky amniotic fluid was blasting out of him, spraying all over the deck far behind him, goaded further by how tightly he was still clenching his cheeks, further amping up the pressure the fluid was under.
“Jesus Christ, dude!” Charlie laughed as he leaned back to watch. To his credit, he couldn't help doing either. “When Emily's water broke, it wasn't like this!”
“Ohmygod!” Liv shouted as she started excitedly jumping up and down. “There's so much! Why is there so much, Elaine?!” She asked. “Should we be worried?! Ugh, damn it! I left my phone in the kitchen!” She groaned as she continued her ridiculous jumping.
“That is a lot,” Elaine needlessly confirmed as still more water gushed from Derek, who'd gone back to hunching forward over his slightly shrinking belly at some point during the mortifying process. “But no need to worry, though everyone does need to watch their step…” she warned. “This isn't actually water, and even though it's sticky, it's surprisingly slick, which helps mommies, or in this case, daddies get their babies out,” she explained.
Charlie was still leaning back watching the “explosive show” Derek was inadvertently putting on for all of them when he suddenly leaned over and in and scrunched up his nose. “It smells…” he paused. “Sweet..?” He frowned. “Emily's didn't smell,” he shook his head.
“It probably did,” the midwife replied. “But you also probably weren't this close when it happened, were you?” She asked Derek and Liv's “helpful” neighbor, who laughed again as he vehemently shook his head.
“No, thankfully, I wasn't,” Charlie answered. “I was in the bathroom when it happened so I only saw the aftermath, which…” he paused as he craned his neck back and turned it to the side to look back at the deck behind them. “Wasn't anywhere near as much as this!” He laughed some more.
While all this talk about him was taking place, Derek was hit by his next contraction. Once again, it was strong, but he didn't let anyone know what was happening yet and just remained hunched over his belly as his asshole continued to spurt. All he could do was moan and groan from the combination of emotions and physical sensations he'd never experienced all at the same time.
Once the contraction ended, physically, there was no denying he felt a lot better, for the moment, anyway… No longer did Derek feel like he was about to pop, because he just had, so he briefly allowed himself to enjoy that as there wasn't anything else enjoyable about what'd just occurred. Nothing at all…
To say he was mortified no longer came close to explaining how badly he felt about himself. Mentally, as his monumental release of amniotic fluid finally tapered off in another staccato series of wet farts, Derek felt like he'd just taken the most epic kick to his balls (aka: his ego) imaginable.
Following one last spurt (for now, anyway) of amniotic fluid, which trickled down his legs without the pressure to send it shooting out behind him, tears of pain, shame and embarrassment prickled at the corners of his eyes. Derek refused to lift his clouded gaze from his slightly smaller belly and the decking he could see beyond it.
“I appreciate all your… help, Charlie,” he managed to get out at just above a whisper. “But I think we can manage things from here now, right ladies?” He asked, hoping against hope he'd get the response he needed/deserved.
For the first (and more likely than not, only) time that morning, Elaine came to his rescue.
“We can manage,” she confirmed.
“Are you ladies sure?” Charlie asked, evidently more than happy to continue to help. “At least let me help you get the big guy inside?” He offered.
“We'll be alright,” Elaine said as she moved in to support Derek. Physically, anyway… That she was capable of doing so amazed everyone.
“No sweat,” Charlie replied once the swap had been successfully completed. “At least none of mine!” He chuckled as he looked at his courtesy of Derek, sweat-soaked shirt. “Since I'm all wet now and you ladies have your hands full, lemme grab the hose and wash down the deck.”
“Oh, thank you, Charlie!” Liv smiled at him. “You're just the best!”
“No,” Derek said firmly, before Charlie had the chance to respond. “No need.”
“Um, yes, there is!” Liv disagreed. “You made a HUGE mess, Derek and Charlie was nice enough to offer to clean it up since we do have our hands full!” She nodded as she set her empty hands on her hips, sure for the moment that she was about to win yet another argument, but she wasn't.
“Elaine and I do, but not you,” Derek replied. “You're perfectly capable of hosing down the deck yourself, Liv, so get to it,” he told his now pouting wife as belatedly, he reached behind himself and set the back of the robe back in place as best he could.
He didn't worry about the front. There was no point. Almost everyone had already seen just about everything by then, anyway…
“No, Derek, I can't do it!” Liv continued to protest. “I need to be there for you and the…”
Derek cut his wife off with a loud groan. Liv was really working his last nerve, and as much as he hated to admit it after everything he'd already been through so far that morning, they (he) still had a long and trying day ahead of them, so he needed a break. A break from his wife, much like the one she and Elaine had taken in the kitchen over coffee…
“Olivia…”
Derek only ever used his wife's full name when they were arguing, he really needed to get her attention, or he had something important to say, all of which proved true at the moment. He didn't know where this renewed confidence had come from, or how long it was going to stick around, so he wasn't about to let it go to waste…
“After everything I've done for you, for us…” he said as he looked over at her. “Which needless to say, includes going along with all of this!” He huffed and rolled his eyes. “Please, for the love of God, just do this one fucking thing for me without turning it into another one of your big fucking productions! Do you think you can do that for me?
To say Olivia looked taken aback was an understatement if ever there was one. For the next several seconds, she just stood there staring at her husband, hands still on her hips, honestly not quite sure how to respond?
By then, it'd been some time since Derek had “put her in place,” and while she didn't appreciate him doing so in front of their neighbor and midwife, she belatedly realized that after everything he had in fact done for them, aka, mainly her, maybe she did deserve it? As such, she nodded.
“I'll hose the deck down myself,” she said quietly.
“Really though…” ever helpful Charlie chimed back in. “I wouldn't mind. I…”
“I've got it, Charlie,” Liv smiled at him again, her expression forced this time. “Thanks again for all your help.”
Satisfied for the time being, and not thinking for the moment about how embarrassing the last few minutes had been, Derek turned to look up and over at Elaine.
“I'm ready to go in and get checked again,” he told her.
The older woman smirked back at him. “Sounds like a good idea,” she nodded before adding quietly so Liv wouldn't hear. “And it sounds like Daddy's finally finding his voice!” She winked.
*****
“Seven and a half centimeters and seventy percent effaced,” Elaine announced once they were back in the kitchen and Derek was leaning against the island again. “Not bad…”
“Over halfway there,” Derek said, more to himself. “Are you sure I don't need to go to the bathroom?” He asked again. “Maybe I should try?”
“I'm sure,” Elaine said again with a roll of her eyes.
As they'd slowly made their way back inside, Derek had told her twice that he still felt like he needed to poop. The midwife had given him the same explanation both times: explaining he felt that way because after his water broke, the baby had moved lower.
“Don't think I don't know you had another contraction…” she also said. “Given how… excited Liv was, we can keep that one between the two of us.”
“So now what?” Derek asked as he slowly straightened back up, wincing as he did.
“Now, you keep having contractions and we wait till you're ready to push.”
“How much longer do we wait?” He frowned as he rubbed the right side of his belly, which he found to be slightly softer now that it wasn't packed with amniotic fluid. It was, however, still packed with baby, obviously.
“You're a first-timer,” Elaine reminded. “You're doing better than I anticipated,” she admitted. “But I think it'll still be several more hours before you'll be ready to push.”
“Several?” Derek groaned as he frowned harder.
“If you're lucky, it might only be a few,” the midwife shrugged. “If you want to speed things up, I'd keep walking, or you can go back to bouncing on your ball, or give nipple stimulation a try,” she suggested.
Derek shook his head. “I don't wanna walk anymore or bounce. It feels like the baby's head is right between my hips.”
“Because it is,” Elaine replied. “But it still needs to get lower.”
“It feels like I have a bowling ball between my legs!” He groaned again.
“That's because basically, you do,” the midwife chuckled.
“Bouncing won't hurt the baby? Won't like… squish its head?”
“Do you think I'd suggest it if it did?”
“Probably not…” Derek grunted.
“You really don't want to give nipple stimulation a try, do you?” Elaine chuckled and shook her head.
“No!” He grunted again.
“Aren't you planning on breastfeeding?” She asked.
“Liv wants me to try,” Derek rolled his eyes.
“Well then something tells me you're going to, so I suggest you start getting used to it. Honestly, you should've started sooner,” Elaine shook her head. “Your poor nipples are going to get all raw and chapped.”
“That's possible?” Derek frowned again.
“Oh, Derek…” the midwife sighed as she shook her head some more. “Poor, poor, Derek…”
“I'll be fine!” He scoffed.
“Uh huh…”
“I'm gonna go bounce some more,” he grumbled as he started waddling out of the kitchen.
“Good call,” Elaine replied as she headed over to the coffee put to pour herself another cup.
