A brain device that replaces psychedelics?
🕑 Added 2024-11-22 20:08:45 +0000 UTCDr. Michael Persinger was a cognitive neuroscience researcher and professor at Laurentian University in Canada known for his work on the effects of electromagnetic fields on perception.
Persinger's research was quite broad, but he is perhaps best known for his work on the ‘God Helmet’a controversial experimental apparatus that he developed.
The God Helmet was designed to stimulate the brain with weak magnetic fields. Some subjects reported experiencing visions of God, out-of-body experiences, and other mystical phenomena during these experiments
Persinger's work has been both influential and controversial. His findings have been seen as significant by some researchers who argue that they provide a scientific explanation for religious and spiritual experiences. However, others have criticized his methods and interpretations, arguing that his findings are not reliable or that he overstates their implications.
In addition to his work on the God Helmet, Persinger also conducted research on a variety of other topics, including the effects of geomagnetic activity on biological systems, the neurological basis of fear and anxiety, and the potential for telepathy, remote reviewing and other parapsychological phenomena which he claims have been proven in his experimentation
While I'm not particularly interested in having psychic or out of body experiences for the sake of it, I have been looking into some methods that can help me deepden and improve the quality of my meditations.
The Mind to Mind system (from Musuel of Tarot) is a replica device to the ones that persinger used in his experiments. You can build your own instructions are online from museum of tarot) or you can purchase it from them directly (link below)
If what many have claimed about this device is true, I think this might be a really awesome way to replace assisted psychedelic therapy for things like PTSD and depression.
As promised when I initially wrote about this for my old IG (now patreon subscribers), I wanted to give everyone an update on how these experiments went.
Will I didn’t experience any of the wild claims purported by Persinger in his experiments (likely because I’m slightly adverse to the idea of actually wanting to have an out of body experience), I definitely feel like the device (the mind to mind system) has a noticeable impact on the quality of my meditations. More lucid, more focused, and a generally improved mood and outlook on life following routine meditation.
If you’re interested in meditation, this may be a device worth looking into. The instructions that come with the device make use fairly clear. Personally, I like using the device occasionally at night before bed
Are there other benefits?
Michael Persinger's work on PTD and similar techniques often highlights a range of other reported benefits beyond just inducing lucid dreams, out-of-body experiences, and enhanced meditation. However, many users often do report profound altered states, which can facilitate introspection and personal insight as well as.
Beyond this, I don’t think that the benefits of altered states stop with the simple subjective improvement or enjoyability of the altered state of conciousness itself. These experience may actually be a means through which we can chance the benefits of meditation for things like healing
In a previous article I wrote on placebo, I delve deep into some the mechanisms of positive expectations and their similarities with meditation:
Robert O Becker was a researcher in the field of bioelectromagnetics, who delved into the intricate mechanism of action through which direct electric currents controlled by the a ‘primitive’ part of the brain and nervous system could elucidate fascinating phenomena such as the placebo effect, regeneration capabilities as well as some of the benefits seen in advanced meditation.
Becker's research on the intricate relationship between direct current electric currents and healing processes hints at a scientific mechanism underlying the role of electric signals in regulating physiological responses and promoting regeneration. Becker's pioneering work elucidated how DC electric currents play a pivotal role in facilitating cellular communication, tissue repair, and regeneration, providing some wild insights into the intersection of bioelectricity and biological processes.
At the core of Becker's investigation was the concept that DC electric currents serve as crucial mediators of cell-to-cell communication and coordination within the body. These electric signals, generated by the brain and other tissues, play a massive role in transmitting information and regulating various physiological functions. By manipulating and studying DC currents in experimental settings, Becker discovered that these electrical signals could modulate cell behavior, influence tissue growth, and contribute to the body's healing responses.
If meditation produces similar, profound results to the placebo effect via tapping into the DC or ‘electric’ control networks in the brain, could device like PTD enhance this? I think it’s possible
