Here it is, the long awaited Doggerland update post.

“The inhabitants of Doggerland called themselves the Ingwine. This name was drawn from the earliest surviving references to their forebears, notably Tacitus’ Germania and Pliny the Elder’s Natural History, which describe three broad Germanic groups living in what was then Germania: the Ingvaeones, the Herminones (Irminones) and the Istvaeones. The Ingvaeones were the North Sea Germanic peoples, forebears of the Danes, northern Germans, the Dutch and the English, along with other communities around the North Sea. Ingwine is a de-Latinised rendering of Ingvaeones.
The name Ingwine is also attested in the earliest Old English sources, most notably Beowulf, where it serves as an ethnonym for the Danes, meaning the “friends of Ing”, lending the name further legitimacy. Unfortunately for the modern descendants of the Ingwine, they did not meet the UE’s definition of indigeneity and so had to fight tooth and nail for their independence.
In their struggle against the UE, the Ingwine took unexpected turns, most interestingly a sizeable return to heathenry, prompted by their reclaimed ancient name of Ingwine, ‘friends of Ing’, with Ing being short for the fertility deity Ingvi-Freyr.
Worldwide, growing resistance movements of peoples seeking self-determination and homelands of their own forced the already strained UE to make concessions. The Ingwine were granted a fraction of their former homeland. These new borders rather romantically mirrored Anglo-Saxon migration maps, this was enough to bring peace.
As the French independence movement faltered, leaders in Hauts-de-France sought survival through alliance with their neighbours. The region’s native Germano-Celtic populace had long ties to England and Flanders. Though the area was settled chiefly by Istvaeonic Franks, from whom France takes its name, Saxons also settled there as part of the wider Germanic expansion into the former Roman Empire. The Ingwine embraced them and counted them as kin. With Ingwine backing, the leaders of Hauts-de-France secured territory and joined “Ingland”. The move gave Ingland ports on both sides of the Channel and thus dominance over the North Sea.
By securing the Strait of Dover, Ingland controlled the narrowest reach of the English Channel. Hemmed in by the UE, it could not expand outward, so it turned inward. A vast land bridge was built across the Dover Strait and large-scale land reclamation began along the eastern side.
With Britain linked to continental Europe, a vision dawned in the national consciousness: their destiny was to raise the lost land of Doggerland from the North Sea and connect their coasts once again. More land bridges were built between the nearest points along the shores and with each new patch of reclaimed land, Doggerland slowly emerged. So many archaeological discoveries were made in this golden age.
With the North Sea wall completed, so too was the multi-generational project. As an act of friendship, what remained of Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Manx and Cornish dissidents were gifted Gaelic and Brythonic cultural zones in the north of Doggerland after their bids for self-determination failed. There, their culture, language and peoples could be preserved.
From above, Doggerland may appear artificial with its sea walls, canals and washes, but the view from the ground was quite different. Much of the land between farms was set aside as nature corridors. There was a law that every settlement had to be bordered by a forest equal in area to the settlement itself, which created vast wooded swathes across the nation. Set against the straight lines of the great canals, smaller streams were encouraged to meander through the countryside, creating meadows. The governing principle driving these decisions was that “life is an aesthetic experience”. As per this philosophy, official state buildings were constructed in a revived neo-Gothic style and the streets of new towns were lined with crow-stepped gable buildings. In rural areas, villages with thatched-roof cottages were most common.
This strain of romanticism is why, when Deicide discovered the remains of fallen warriors on the moon at the beginning of his rebellion, some of them resembled Vikings; these were Ingwine from Doggerland.”

Oh absolutely dude, that stuff is super fascinating though. I know that most of the south are made up of Scottish, Irish and northern English borderlander settlers and the “yankees” in the north were primarily from southern English stock, it’s quite compelling that old rivalry’s from the British isles were carried over into the new world to inform the battle lines of the American civil war. You can hear the influence of the old country a little bit in the regional dialects that formed too. There’s a book I keep hearing people mention on this, I’ve read snippets and extracts from it online that I found quite interesting, I haven’t read the whole book or anything so I can’t recommend it or not, but it’s called Albion’s seed.

This is reminding me of my friend who has a book about her family's Scots-Irish heritage, from which notable Americans arose throughout and were instrumental to the development of the US. I can also see that today and beyond, a political correctness factor would be applied to certain groups trying to rally around their roots vs. others.

I hear you, it does sound far-fetched, but that’s part of the fun in the world building aspect of it. That being said, some strange things can accidentally be uncovered and swell up from the collective unconscious of a group when that group is forced by necessity to rediscover themselves in a search for identity by outside forces. Like you said, the UE forced their hand. Oh that’s really cool that your people still identify with Lusitania, fascinating! There is no doubt some genetic continuity from the lusitanians in modern day Iberian's that have been living in the same area ever since so it’s probably not completely unfounded. Thanks, I’m glad that you find it interesting. There will be little snippets here and there in the main series, but the Humanity Lost prequel is where this stuff will really come to the fore.

Impressive as always lad. I am honestly quite surprised that so many people would adopt a culture that they barely have any connection to besides geographical and in some cases a bit of cultural. But then again the UE's homogenization actions seems to have forced their hand and me and my people are somewhat examples of this adoption of old names since we also call ourselves lusitanians despite the only connection being geographical and perhaps genetic. Guess what I am saying is that it's surprising but not unprecedented. Either way, can't wait to learn more about Doggerland and the other states on Earth.

The infographic titled “The formation of the United Earth” answers a lot of what you asked there about the conditions that led up to the formalisation of the UE. The conditions were much as they are now, only exasperated somewhat. They used the typical slogan “global problems require global solutions” as their approach to consolidating more power for themselves. The reasons you described there are all apt. Yes, they’d sometimes use crises that arose naturally to their advantage, manufacturing consent for them to acquire the necessary powers to fix the issue. Sometimes they’d even intentionally create problems, or the perception that there is a problem, only for themselves to step in and solve it for their own interests. When I say “they” in this context, I mean the global governance superstructure that existed well before the actual formalisation of the United Earth itself. Things like the UN, the World Health Organisation, the World Economic Forum, the World Bank and the many other global NGOs can be understood as the bodies that would eventually coalesce and transform into the United Earth government. Between now and 2121, more and more of these “global governance” bodies, as they are known, kept popping up and their network of power grew. It was hidden in plain sight in a way, but yes you’re correct. That’s a good question and it’s one in which a single word will suffice to answer it. That being Power. power attracts powerful people and powerful people think that the locus of power can serve them, but they almost always end up serving it and thus its power grows. A powerful government or a large corporation or bank, when it reaches a certain level of control and hegemony over its area of influence, can gain an uncontrollable and unthinking momentum of its own. Power seeks only one thing, more power. It’s cliche to say, but it is almost a fundamental aspect of power that it wants to be seen, this is why the UE was established.

I’m sorry the redoubt didn’t make the cut. I didn’t want there to be too much of the Earth’s surface not under UE control. It’d make it seem too weak otherwise. The redoubt was a libertarian propositional state. That’s what Texas is also. I had to cut down on the amount of states that I wanted to include. The Redoubt and Texas filling the same sort of slot meant that one of them had to win out in the end. The Lone Star State is just too iconic not to include. Thanks, Doggerland is by no means the most powerful of the free states. Texas is the largest economy in the world, barring the UE. Matu Arbai, Persia, Great Israel, Tīanhán, Korea, Yamato Koku, and Türkiye are all comparable-sized economies to Doggerland. As is Tawantinsuyu. Doggerland also isn’t the only nation with a space program either. I’ll be touching on that in the next post. Doggerland is very advanced in some specialised areas, especially land reclamation, but it lacks in others like cybernetics and artificial intelligence. It also isn’t exactly a super-industrialised power either. Doggerland prioritises aesthetics and quality of life, massive swaths of the reclaimed land are even devoted to the creation of new national parts, for people and nature to heal and enjoy. The cities are walkable, small, and aesthetically pleasing. A high-speed railway network is incorporated into the various sea walls and dams, so the nation as a whole is very interconnected. That’s also why you see that many of the cities are right next to dams or are even built into the dams themselves. This is so that they are incorporated into the transportation network and are easy to travel to and from. Doggerland could be richer if it industrialised more and cut some corners, but the philosophy that drives that society is contrary to that mindset. There is more to life than “line go up.” 📈 An economy should serve the people, not the other way around. Many of the other nations are nice places to live in as well. After securing independence from the UE, nations and states became as much of what they are as they could be. By that I mean that they embraced in whole the things that made their societies unique. Tīanhán, for example, is outwardly very Chinese. Buildings have xie-shan and wu-dian style roofs, for example, with the classic upturned eaves. But yes, most nations are better places to live than the UE, though not all are. Yes, I think a “right of return” citizenship policy would logically make sense for many of these nations. That exists today, even. Descent would be the quickest way to citizenship. I imagine many would also allow low and easily manageable levels of immigration in a manner that would not change the national character while also benefiting its inhabitants. That’s an interesting way to look at it, I agree. I can imagine Texas stealing a lot of the top talent from all over the place, to be honest. It’s warm, and people can enjoy unrivalled freedom there.

What was the world like at the time of the U.E. taking over? Did the U.E. try to justify its existence by pointing to global issues like climate change, billions in poverty, countries and corporations exploiting weaker nations etc? What kind of stuff did the U.E. say to get people on its side? Was there something like a youth organization they set up to get young people to support the new world government? I bet the U.E. tried to hide the fact that the whole thing was set up by financial elites or people like that and tried to brand itself as a sort of organically developing international organization. I guess I'm interested in how exactly the U.E. managed to form a near world state, as it would have required an immense amount of support even if the majority of people were too occupied to bother. Also why was the U.E. world government established in the first place?

I was looking at your previous maps of Earth and saw that several new nations were added but others were lost (I'll miss the Redoubt). Was there any reason the nations that got cut were? Regarding Doggerland specifically I have a few questions. It seems to be a favorite of yours, it's really cool, but was it among the most prominent of the remaining non-UE nations? We know that they have a space program of some size, which suggests a high level of technological and economic sophistication. Was the average standard of living higher in Doggerland or any other the surviving nation states than the UE (which had a "you will own nothing and be happy about it" vibe)? Finally, did Doggerland and other Ethnic states attempt to call their lost kin home? Like, if people could prove dissent to a certain level, would they offer you citizenship? I could see both Doggerland and the UE pros and cons. The pros are that Doggerland (and the other states that follow similar policy) could increase their population, and the UE can bleed off the last bits of their population with any remaining ethnic identity or loyalty. The cons would be Doggerland having to culturally integrate former UE subjects while the UE would be allowing any of it's populace the chance to leave (they seem like the kind of government that doesn't like providing their people options).
