Gotta join the meritocratic technocult.

The first chapter you had to hold back from flagging was definitely sweet. And this one is nice too! I wouldn’t have thought anything of it if you hadn’t asked if your sappy chapters lacked. But I wouldn’t call this sappy. But nice, happy? Yeh. Though the kiddos haven’t chatted enough for it to be really sappy lol. Love Ari btw she’s lovely.

Yeah, character connection makes a massive difference, but i guess my definition of sappy was a bit different. I meant more the way Val'oura and Ari would jump to an embrace first. I guess what i mean is I'm unsure how to write characters that express their emotions overly physically, lol. Especially when the protag isn't all that receptive to it.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are talking about, but sappy generally refers to emotional sentiment. Sentimental scenes are generally ones where emotional connections are established, emphasized, tested, reaffirmed, or otherwise used to generate a sentimental mood. If I were to venture a guess as to what might be the issue, you are going through all the right motions for the “sappy” scene in question, but it doesn't have the supporting emotionally relatable groundwork. I mean, you even say it yourself: she barely knows these people. She's an outlier forced to keep an extremely isolating secret, which makes any emotional closeness much harder to establish. Ironically, the emotionless machine man is far more likely to have some genuinely sentimental moments. Because intimidating yet caring/goofy uncle/dad Tarchon has waaaay more going on in the emotional connection spectrum to the reader than these background characters. We know more about him, plus his contrasts and inhuman facets make the few more human and sympathetic qualities stand out all the more. Sappy, or at least "sappy-adjacent", scenes with him have worked quite well. To put this in an experimentally cynical way: your best sappy scenes are going to be with characters people would _really_ miss if you killed them, followed closely by scenes where characters are doing things that would make [most people] care enough to feel bad if they [hypothetically] died in the very next scene. In summation: sappy scenes are a real tough sell with relative unknowns. Yea, there's ways around it, but they involve using emotional legerdemain/shorthand.

You're a writer, of course you're imagining things; it's your job :P

This wasn't a slip of the tongue. I believe this was the official story they agreed on and the official reason why she is with Tarchon. Also hiding her mutations was only possible with the help of a clearly very strong cult leader. and while it is not a primary cult that it only fell once the cults united and took years at that shows she is incomparable to normal cultists.

Hopefully the fleshsmiths have no more ears inside this ward, as the leader is looking for a mutated girl that was running amock in the dark star, and here is random girl of correct age that claims to have been in the dark star but somehow survived, despite all the fleshsmiths dying. Sure she has no visible mutations, but there are wilder things possible then disguising additional limbs so at the very least would investigate if news reached them.

Nyxil really reads as out of her element talking to kids ostensibly her age. She doesn't really know who to be around them, and it shows. It's hard to say if this is artificial, or if it's some buried part of her forced into the light like a newly hatched bird, disheveled and shivering.

The sappy/happy scenes always feel temporary, but that might be because of the whole rest of the story. Like it just feels the sappiness can't last long with the other crazy stuff that happens with your characters. It feels like the characters themselves are opposed to sappiness/happiness. Like the whole story we've read that Nyx hates the cults and will stop at nothing to destroy them, and then we get these scenes where she's trying to connect with the kids that were around her that have a completely different outlook on life. People tend to feel the most lonely when they're around other people, so that could be why. A feeling of loneliness? She doesn't (yet?) have a strong connection with these people around her.

But would it be sappy if you were good at it?
