EP238. How we actually sail Tally Ho - a technical gaff-rig walkthrough
🕑 Added 2026-01-17 16:38:19 +0000 UTCIn this episode we show you how we actually physically operate Tally Ho’s Gaff Rig - from tensioning the Bobstay to hoisting the gaff topsail. We explain the jib traveller, the difference between stays and shrouds, and the multi-part purchase systems that allow each crew member to multiply their lifting strength by 12 times!
At the start of this video we also document the complex customs / immigration procedure that we have to go through when visiting a Central American country by boat, which involves renting a motorbike to get to the relevant offices.
Finally, after setting off on a long passage, we discover a serious issue with our Hybrid Motor, and are forced to anchor Tally Ho under sail.

Great video on the rigging. I suspect most of us viewing sail simple Marconi rigs (I used to have a Flying Scott) and are unfamiliar with the complexities of larger rigs with different sail plans. I would like to learn about how you judge the proper set of the sails under various wind conditions.

I'm familiar with modern Bermuda rigs but not traditional Gaff Rigs. It was fascinating to have it all explained so clearly. it is also nice to have the little glimpses of crew life and fun along with the work of booking in and out of country, provisioning and all the other details that can get overlooked. Bad luck with the motor but good that the supplier is so anxious to help get it all back and working Bristol Fashion.

The halyard Jiggers are a new thing for me, cool! Since there is one on the peak halyard, it's clear that there would be reason to adjust the peak halyard beyond merely getting the peak up. I'm also looking forward to understanding how you use the "Gaff Vang" that you mentioned you'd only just started to use. My suspicion is that all of these are used to adjust sail shape, draft depth and maximum draft position... Flat for working to windward, full for reaching...

Leo, you always seem to be able to clearly and succinctly describe anything you are doing ,but even with the complicated task of describing and explaining the rigging, it was done in an easy to understand manner. Not an easy task. glad to hear that your charging woes will be handled by the manufacturer, even if it will be a bit of an inconvenience for you and the crew. Brilliant video - explaining the complexity of a gaff rig to make it easily understandable. Not an easy thing - nicely done. I have sailed multiple masted boats but never a gaff rig. It looks hard work but essentially straightforward.
