I don’t personally feel like Louie owes anything to skating, I’m cool with him selling out a little if he wants to wear some nice shit. I agree though it’s not very cool in general to skate for brands that just use the image of skating to help them sell to hipster dads in Brooklyn who spend 300 on a jacket. I’d prefer it if Louie skated for something that was geared towards actual skaters cause that’s what keeps this whole thing rolling, but I don’t see it as a huge problem tbh it’s just kinda kooky

it’s not about only representing bill but about profiting over the art of black artists. yeah he could be paying them but at the end of the day, bill is the one getting the fattest check because it’s HIS company. it’d be a different conversation if the black artists/skaters had shares in the company or if they had equal ownership and bill just handled the business aspect of it all cause he is the most knowledgeable. i don’t think violet is necessarily bad but from an outsiders point of view, if there was a skateboard company w black art/artists as their ‘brand’ it would be safe to assume it’d be a black-owned skate brand. imagine how shocked some people would be when they see bill is the owner.

I think you can do $48 and still have it be good boards considering the graphics are considerably cheaper, you're not paying any pros, it's direct to consumer so theres no shop that needs to get paid, plus Bill is rich so he doesnt need to turn a big margin early while establishing the company. One irony here is that Steve Steadham started the first "black-owned" skate brand back in 1986 ( https://stedmz.us/pages/about-us ), Ron Allen had "Fun" in 1992, and there have been a handful of other instances wherein POC have been put in commanding positions in skateboarding (Kareem, Stevie, etc.). Most hardgoods companies lose money no matter what, so Bill's project of 1) working with his teammates for ideas and 2) paying collaborators for graphics doesn't seem that top-down to me.

I agree with joa but i was also thinking about how it is probably all run together as a team with how small the brand is. I think it could be good for bill to show like more visibility on how the brand decisions are made. There is also still the issue that bill is the owner and end source of the (maybe partial, if it’s split with the collaborative artists) profit generated from the merchandise being sold. I think violet is an overall good and I think it’s a sick company. I also think it’s good that an important dialogue is being opened up about it!

I think a big thing is like: I know people who know will, who are friends with will, and like if he himself solo we’re doing this behind his desk and trying to profit off black culture it’d be wrong. Strobeck being the owner of violet makes the graphics do seem weird, but troy said in an interview a while back that the whole team gets creative input into the graphics and kind of the overall direction they want violet going towards. The violet boards were meant to represent the team as a whole, not just squilliam strobeck.

I think WS’s heart is in the right place but the optics are a bit murky. It remains to be seen how the company will develop and if WS will eventually hand (creative) control over to Kader or have him as an equal partner or some other model no one can anticipate. Your larger question of who’s selling black culture/benefitting financially from it is a valid one and, as you pointed out, this issue has its roots going back several hundred years. Ultimately, I think it’s good you’re sensitive to these issues as many people aren’t. Always err on the side of sensitivity.

Personally I don't see anything controversial in the content although understand why you brought it down. Potentially shifting presentation from less assumption/judgment to more probing and questioning without concluding may soften the landing? May not be as impactful but the points still stand. Its right to question and scratch below the surface, but as Joa highlights, we're not privy to all the information to have a conclusive position. Who exactly is benefiting and to what extent is imperative, Kaders position/benefits/involvement (same applies to any other black riders) is fundamental.

This version is for sure solid enough to handhold an audience through the argument, if people not getting your point is what you're afraid of. It doesn't really feel controversial. You're coming at a white guy, not women or blackpeople = not gonna get you cancelled ;) Especially focusing on the distinction between assisting and owning/exploiting, that's spot on! I think you could push a little harder on the idea that Kader should co-own like at least 50% of the company for it to feel good. One thing though: careful with the Reynolds praise in this context. While you're totally right about the status of Baker as a company, Reynolds has repeatedly faced criticism for exploiting black riders and stereotypes - some of it not unfounded, like giving Antwuan and TK gangsta-type graphics and enabling/monetizing their downward spiral without stepping in soon enough like he did for Spanky.

Well nobody has done Violet specifically but it is not the first black board company or even the only one currently. In my opinion just because Strobeck has the coolest modern idea for a black skateboarding company that doesn't eliminate the ethical mine field of owning one. I think if you look at the website and see that he hires black artists and has a queer charity board those can be interpreted as a disguise/ distraction because there may be something backwards at the core of it all. Again not doubting or minimizing Bill's talent, I touched on that in the vid, he could use that talent in a better way imo.

I never loved the “somebody else should be doing it” position because it simultaneously highlights and ignores the direct counterpoint; that nobody else has. Its a position that only comes up after something interesting has been built. Subjectively I think bill showed some serious hubris creating a brand with this image but that doesn’t take away that the image is a concept he brought to life and executed well.
