I hope they release footage from the thrasher cover
Theodore Barrow
He’s not competing in X-Games/Street League, etc. but taking a pretty traditional route towards a skate career. On top of that, the word “king” has been thrown around enough (ahem https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/08/29/magazine/tyshawn-jones.html) that it’s not really too put of pocket. Also, if Joa is willing to celebrate someone like Max Palmer for not locking into things and his imperfection, why isn’t that same appreciation being extended to Tyshawn ? Genuinely curious.
Theodore Barrow
Sounds like you don’t know much about NY. Or skateboarding 😂😂😂
Mason Donovan
the important thing is if 99.99% of people tried this they would die, and ty did not die and rolled away so it is still sick
Shredsi
"King Skateboards" - can I get another round of the "athletic but not a jock" argument? A bit of "significant non-makes" and clown hat on the side please.
JP
I've been thinking, I think I would have taken his soty run more seriously if he just left out the switch ollie altogether and said, "I didn't like the footage" as the only explanation. The mystique of that situation would have been far easier to swallow than the confirmed shortcoming of this clip coming to light.
Frontside shitslide
Much respect. Takes a real man to concede on a point that they realized in hindsight was false.
Frontside shitslide
Will you please upload the last one of you watching the Street League
Theodore Barrow
Yeah maybe I’m wrong though
Theodore Barrow
That could be so, but I doubt it’s a question of filmers or photographers being intimidated. Anyway, I’ve thought about it and I’ve decided I was wrong about it
Theodore Barrow
Yep you’re right, I was wrong about that.
Marcus Metsalu
I think he shiftyd the ollie
Coleman Mummery
That is why the skaters need you to keep it real
Felix K.
I was questioning myself after seeing all of these discussions because from just seeing the thrasher photo and video part at first it was so obvious to me that he just cleared the low part of the table. Really did not expect Ted to have this different opinion in your previous video.
Armin Halvadžić
It would be amazing if he just posted a clip on his insta off him clearly going over the table
1
Skaters are so bias when it comes to the dudes they like, which I get but also sometimes it’s okay to admit tyshawn didn’t clear it
Armin Halvadžić
No need to diss the haters when you clearly didn't go over it. Sick clip, but you did not clear the table
Armin Halvadžić
If this goes on youtube Joa will lose all street cred
Will Mitchell
So that we would argue about it
Coleman Mummery
Please upload this to YouTube. Skateboarders are obviously too dumb to figure this out themselves.
Coleman Mummery
Ok well why did they put the shitty clip in if the cover was already out before the part smart guy?
Coleman Mummery
That would be a stupid and lame marketing tactic
Coleman Mummery
Use your eyes and brain. He was like 4 inches from the crack on the outside of the bench when he popped (the outside of the middle since the poles are in the middle of the bench, Joa kinda got that part wrong) when he popped and landed on the other side. Tyshawn ollied over the BENCH. Plus the shadows do not indicate that the sun was directly overhead.
Coleman Mummery
Yeah, I think it would be based as hell if he admitted to it, humbled himself, and then went and ollied the fkn table.
Coleman Mummery
Extreme cope. Tyshawn clearly jumped over the bench of the table and tried to pass it off. Just accept that you are lying to yourself and stop trying to rationalize it by shifting the goalpost and talking about irrelevant shit like “anti-olympics” lmfao
Frontside shitslide
It's extremely simple. Like joa said the seats are not only lower, but also, and more importantly.. slightly shorter in length. He approaches the table and ollies somewhat towards the center/middle of the table when he pops/ollies. He drifts/moves towards the left side (from his perspective) as he clears it. By the time that he lands the ollie he was no longer over the table top, but the seat (again which is shorter than the top) which means that if he were to stay centered over the top as he ollied then he would have clipped the end of the table top with the speed and height that he had from that ollie. He would have had to go slightly higher and or faster according to the laws of physics in order to clear the top than he did.
Frontside shitslide
But we can tell for 100% certainty that it wasn't a proper make, we don't need another angle to tell. It is very clear and easy to see that he didn't clear the top. Everyone saying its a make is completely unable to be objectively on this one. Some true mental gymnastics people are doing to justify his slop.
Dylan Roeder
Oh shit, wuddup Ted! I think he was too far off to the side for it to count as “over the table”, so the fact that the people on the sesh didn’t tell him he wasn’t clearing it proper makes me think they’re not being genuine with him, like they don’t wanna upset the cool popular guy.
Anthony Moreno
Would re-filming this trick do Tyshawn any favors?
Alex
the moving table conspiracy
Theodore Barrow
I get your point—his influences before supreme were rail guys and he wanted to skate for toy machine etc—but I still see a difference between the type of athletic skating he does and the contest/handrail skating of the mainstream. If he wanted to be on Element, he’d be on element. He’s not, so that kind of speculation doesn’t help your argument. You can be an athletic skater without being a jock.
Shredsi
So your point is Tyshawn is the anti jock?! Sorry but that is hilarious. Do you follow his insta at all? The self motivating king elite meme shit he blasts out on the daily is, if anything, even more jock and competitive than Nyjah. Just because he was on a team with Ben Kadow and Sage doesn't mean at all that he thinks or sees skateboarding like them. Without Strobeck and Supreme Tyshawn would probably be on Element.

Theodore Barrow
That’s a very good point. Well taken.
Theodore Barrow
Fair enough.
Sim Shepp
I think that’s a bit of a false dichotomy though, in the sense that it has to be “Olympics” or nothing at all. I think in the anti-Olympic world there can still be room for a degree of stringency when it comes to what “counts”. Relative to some random spot, the picnic table in skateboarding represents a very concrete challenge with defined rules (relative to any old rail or stair set). Moreover I think for spots that have that sort of essence about them it can be fair to be a bit more critical of tricks done on them.

Tysahwn himself recently said in an interview with Gary "Lebron does not win a championship because he just happened to be playing basketball, so yeah I wanna win SOTY". You have your own opinions about what soty represents but when the formula is 3 parts in 2 months at the end of the year I dont think that idealistic version of the award aligns with what is happening currently. I gotta say I also think it is ironic that this clip of him skipping the side of the table is an example of honesty, I see it as opposite. I am not saying nor do I think those that agree with me are saying soty should be about who goes the biggest (I would not have put gustav tonnesen at #3 in my soty vid if I did). What we are concerned with is what actually happened versus what is being presented to us, if people start faking clips or deceiving skaters to accelerate a soty campaign then I would say that is contrary to the spirit of the award. I do not feel bad for checking him either, cause I think the clip is bogus.
Theodore Barrow
Yes I said “honest” in reference to a debatable clip.
Theodore Barrow
Why would they be “too intimidated?” 🤣🤣
Theodore Barrow
If it were about a quanntifiable, stair-counting, freeze-framing “who-did-what-first/biggest,” Nyjah or some other jock would get SOTY every time. Joa made the mistake of comparing Tyshawn’s part to the Olympics, when actually skater of the year, if anything, is the anti-Olympics. Accept that, whether he cleared the table or not, this style of skating represents something more pure and honest than Berrics/Nyjah/Olympics-style skating. That’s the point.
Dylan Roeder
I bet everyone on the sesh, photographers and filmers as well, knew he wasn’t clearing it but were too intimidated to tell him. Also, Thrasher definitely moved him in the photo through editing. Skate mags have already been busted doing that.

I think smerk is kind a wright. His body is doing a straight line and he guides the board to go shifte in order to make it. Dont know if he really made it but I think the way he corrected his board while rolling away tells you that at least his body made it over the topin a straight line.
Comrade Deez
gifted theorem. i cant see how ppl can argue against the idea that he didnt clear the whole table, essentially the table is the height of what ur clearing & if you drift off over the edge ur no longer clearing the obstacle/height. i think from the angle its quite obvious he would’ve clipped the table if he continued ollie’ing straight. very weird there wasn’t a second angle…
TPB3333
you always ollie in a straight line. That's physics. You can shift your board in regards to your body but you can not alter the path you set out when you popped your ollie
1
Yeah I think he would’ve clipped had he gone at it straight on, I think he knew what he had to do to get over the table. At the end of the day he did not go over the top of the table front to back and I view that as what is being represented in the photo and the video. So to me it is #fakenews
Crooknollieflip
We can also use the parallax from the screenshots. Similar to Blender Guru’s subway tutorial.
Crooknollieflip
Would you say it counts if he cleared it more? Enough to clear it straight on, but then landed to the sides still? The main issue seems like he would’ve clipped if he didn’t go to the side.

It’s coMing rn!

If you’re going to delete vods on twitch you should upload them on here so people who missed the stream can watch

I think even where he popped initially looks barely even over the high part of the table, then to shify and lands next to it with his back truck? Like if he is shifting to clear it that’s to make sure his descent is over the lower part of the table which to me invalidates the trick still. If you’re barely holding on in maintained height what’s going to prevent you from clearing is your back wheels. Interesting observation in my head it’s just another fake news tyshawn cgi technique
1
Maybe I don’t know I think the fact we’re having all these conversations point to the fact there is something fishy about this clip and it’s from one angle so far, and I’m guessing it will remain that way.

exactly this. nobody has mentioned that he shifty's frontside towards the end—he did not ollie in a straight line just like the nollie flip over the can.

He is wearing different clothes on the thrasher cover, maybe there will be another clip in his second part later this year

In part three he’ll show up to the spot with Latent Fingerprint Kit to track where the wheels landed
Jake Lewis
Not to even mention they filmed for multiple days had bail footage and still chose that shitty angle seems purposeful
Bernie Macintosh
To me it seems like his front truck lands almost perfectly in line with where his front truck is when he pops and you can tell for sure he pops over the tabletop in the beginning, seems like the shift made it so his back truck was the only thing that didn't go over the tabletop the whole way, i think he cleared the obstacle but only completed 60% of the objective (all four wheels over the tabletop the whole time) similar to ur point with the nollie flip over the can, like he for sure cleared the can but the shiftyness of the nollie flip made it slightly less valid. I guess my closing statement is that if the table was just one big rectangle (seats are the same height as the top) he had the trajectory to clear the whole thing, but since he did it all the way to one side and shifted over the seats with his back truck half the validity of the trick is gone.
1
The crack is on the outside of the lower part of the table not the top. So If that is true it would only mean that he cleared the lower part which is not the objective of the trick
Bernie Macintosh
But check this out... His front truck landed on the right side of the crack, so if anything the front truck cleared the whole table top no question, and the slight shift is what caused the illusion. and if you look at the shadows they are very short as if the sun is directly above him so the shift off the center line would explain the shadow on the seat of the table.
Screegles
Do a video on the new wknd rollerblades that are coming out.
Smerk
You know how when u try to Ollie over something fat and it kinda shifts? Isn’t that like what happened cause after he lands he like curves back to where the line that he popped from would be
Zach N
I wouldn’t be surprised if Tyshawn gets wind of people thinking he didn’t do it and flies back to California to do it for Instagram and give a sick caption dissing his haters
Wylie
cvs receipt ruler hahaha
JP
It would be amazing if tyshawn catches wind of this vid and goes and redoes it proper
Chris W.
Please make that end ms paint graphic a t-shirt. I need it.
capn
That would be some clown shit If they are seriously holding back the clip of the actual make in order to get people talking. As it stands everyone involved should be ashamed, Atiba, Thrasher, and Tyshawn... can only be forgiven if there is a second angle of the same clip/fit or a no questions switch kickflip over same table
neo
good video
Will Mitchell
Oh good insight. I just like the idea of tyshawn playing 5d chess with us, adds to the character nicely.
JP
Thats some 4d chess that we've never seen before.
Joe Ferruccio
What if the cover photo was actually a make, and the clip is in part 2?
Scamp
The shadow theory is the most spot on bit. His shadow against the table top as well made it more obv he didn’t clear it
Shaun Currie
The debate between you and Ted on that switch ollie actually had me in stitches so . Loved how much you didn’t agree with him

An excellent case and argument you have made for this. Unfortunately, your mother.

I think it’s more likely he went with the photographer on the first day not the second
Nate 'skate' Meyer
Lol same angle as Elijah. Terrified to be filmed straight on.

There's was filmer on a grass knoll. That filmer has the angle that will blow this whole thing wide open.

pure gold. TAKE MY MONEY

Yeah I don't think there's any question with that shadow that it wasn't a full switch table ollie

Aha the shadows got me. Fair play sir, should have studied the clip more before engaging with GH.

idk why but this video reminds me of an r/conspiracy thread or something lmfao

The shadow theory lost me. Was all aboard before that but kinda felt like that was a reach
Alex
Next step is to track the scene in blender and digitally recreate the table, as well as Tyshawn's board. Only then will we know.
JP
Lmao the fucking shadow yes. The shadow goes back… and to the left. Back. And to the left.
Heath
i agree with Alex on this one

Also, Alex Jones pt. 2 right here

Another thing I wanted to address was Tyshawn's style of dress. Interestingly enough, I actually think it's here where Tyshawn most closely aligns with Nyjah. I say that as both seem to have adopted something of a uniform that is more or less incongruous with the average trends within skateboarding. I don't know if the intention is specifically to read more athletic and less casual, or if that style of dress is somehow performance related, but inevitably this does sartorially differentiate them from the rest of the pack. The crucial thing with this is that they also have the talent and skill to differentiate themselves as well. So in their cases specifically, a different style of dress serves to further amplify the attention on them skating, and thus amplify the attention on their skating as well. To wear the same dress as everyone else, they'd blend in somewhat. Or conversely, to adopt a unique style of dress and not be one of the best skaters on a board leaves you open to ridicule and derision. Only in that rare, unique sweet spot where you're inarguably one of the best, does dressing differently actually elevate you.
Will Mitchell
Alternate take: This clip was his first try, the day with the slam and the thrasher cover was him going back for a better make and we will get the clip in the next part and we are all idiots
