Since January, I’ve been saying it would be sick to see Louie win SOTY without even putting a part out. Just random bangers on Instagram while showing up at all the industry events and crushing it. He’s been in the conversation for many years now and I truly feel like he deserves a win. It just sucks to see him take the multiple part route and receive all the (somewhat warranted) criticism that comes along with it

I feel like mark is getting too much blame for the quantity over quality strategy for winning soty when mason silva won the year prior with the same tactics, dropped four parts I think last one had the "bangers". Also in 2013 Ishod won for dropping four parts as well, of course the context in which the parts dropped were different but I do feel as tho that set a precedent for guys who can film easily.

I agree with what you were saying about criticism especially concerning art. The way I look at it though is that while you need to be open to criticism it's important to be able to tell who is an armchair quarterback and who isn't because we don't want to be taking advice from people that have literally no experience whatsoever and what they are criticizing you about

I loved the Tfunk part. It was very thrasher. TJ Rogers has as much footage as Loui though and it’s all been way way gnarlier. I think he’s a goofball but proof is in the pudding. He’s my soty pick

I have a bit about this but basically I think she was pushing herself really really hard, and was able to achieve a really high level but it’s unfair to put that standard onto women’s skateboarding generally. She and Alexis I think really had to kill themselves to get any acceptance in skating.

As far as soty goes - it doesn't matter if you run 100 meters in 9.59 seconds 4 times in a year, when Usain Bolt does it in 9.58 seconds once, and breaks the world record. Consistency is rewarded in every other contest out there, so let's just put it all on the line and see what kind of crazy shit can come out of it - even if it's only for 1 part in a year.

in batb the pop rule is also known as the "Brezinski rule" and was put into place after a match where Joey Brezinski did the unpopped version of any popped shuvit set by whoever he was playing against. since it wasn't in the rules he got away with it I guess and they made the new rule right after. but I agree that a rule should be subject to the ref's interpretation and that it'd be good to apply them to other cases. no one really takes the reffing seriously though

Right--they created a rule to respond to a specific situation that people were complaining about and the refs weren't calling out. Obviously it would be good to have a rule for every single situation but you can't account for everything in the rules imo (and the pivot rule would a good rule, but again I'm not sure how specific you can be with such a rule since some degree of pivoting has to be allowed)

What you are saying makes sense, so it to me it seems like the solution would be to add some rule about 360s so this rule does not have to be used in its place

Uh the rule is set up to distinguish the difference between a pop shuv it and a shuv it. so they did create a rule for different tricks that are similar.

To your point in the Q&A, Griffin was basically doing a different trick. You have to do the same trick for it to count, right? No specific rule needed for that. I think there's the base set of rules, but situations come up in the game and the ref has to make judgment calls based on known principles in skating

Ok that’s very fair, but for the ref to make a decision they need to be supported by some rule no? If Torey can make Jamie griffin redo a 360 with too much slide, what rule would he be referencing if not the rule in question

on the BATB rule, IIRC the rule was specifically added after some skaters didn't pop their shuvs on defense (maybe Marc Johnson with the 360 shuv?), so the intent of the rule is known. I agree with the question-asker that the rule is simply poorly written for its purpose. I also don't think the plain text of rule necessarily applies to the situations you're referencing with the 360s. "Don't do tricks that slide on the ground if your opponent popped their trick." The second half of the rule--"if your opponent popped their trick"--modifies and contextualizes the language in the first half of the rule. So, if your opponent pops, you also must pop--your trick can't simply slide around on the ground. The rule says nothing about rotation, pivoting, or the magnitude of pop/airtime you have to maintain. Obviously some degree of pivoting is okay and it's hard to create a bright-line rule for pivoting 360s/fs flips/etc., particularly on defense. Having said all this, you don't need a rulebook to disqualify Griffin's fake 360s. The ref has the responsibility to call those out as fake regardless.
