Look, if you’re not speaking from the perspective of a trans woman who skateboards, you do not have the insight to be commenting on what standards trans women should be held to in skateboarding. It’s honestly not your place. Like what is par for you? What you’ve seen cis men do? I’m tempted to start getting into how much changes with transitioning. How it effects every aspect of a person’s life let alone fucking skateboarding. How much energy that takes and how much continuing to skate at any rate is a double bind or an uphill battle for any trans women. But what’s actually the point? The people making comments like this care more about how sick a video part is (by their own standards) than the actual life of the person they’re watching. But at least these comments are always prefaced with “inclusivity is great and positive” as if that’s helping anyone.

Which is a great And positive thing However like the issues there skateboards have: the level of skating up to par- in efrons case, No definitely no. That fakie big flip down a 4 stair to hillbimb was the epitome of the kinda clip that would be in your ended of your homies skate video when you were 15. 2. Strobeck wants to be Larry clark so much….. and fails to do so mostly. His fascination of youth doesnt come from an adverse/odd yet genuine reason which clark has, strobecks reason is that he is such an aesthete and is entirely decorative in his creativity that he has as much taste and eye as a average tumblr girls moodboard. P.s - I don’t think him filming candid stuff of boys or girls he knows is weird but his long lense creepy shots of underage girls and woman he doesn’t know is not a good look in any case

Ok so couple things. Regarding the use of black hun and culture, don’t think it’s that deep as most of the stuff chosen may be entirely through strobeck handing the creatives reigns to the riders who several whom are black and saying he what do you want to see on a t shirt or board. I am giving him a massive benefit of the doubt here especially as I strongly on the other hand think it is so fucking cringey that the other half of violets aesthetic is “downtown it NY it girl/ it boy” mood board stuff. Expect to see Chloe sevignys face on a board soon at some point.

If there's anything to learn and move forward from here - for anyone making skate videos - its to actually give a shit and treat your subject matter and audience with more care and understanding. A good video should give a shit. Have some compassion. Create a sense of community, because that's what going out skating and filming illustrates. Giving a shit with a bit of empathy and some hard work usually leads to original ideas, not self indulgent played out ones.

Yea it's strobeck co-opting black culture and imagery as an aesthetic, a fetishization. I'm sure a lot of people would disagree and defend Strobeck, and this definitely won't hinder board sales. But, I mean, people still support problematic companies like Hook Ups...

I think Strobeck is heavily inspired by Larry Clark who I find to be pretty problematic (even though I love the film KIDS (I think it’s mainly good because of Harmony Korines input though)) and I think his love for the sides of Larry Clark that i find to be dodgy are coming across more and more. Lingering, slow motion shots of young teenagers without shirts on is just a bit odd given that he is 45 and I totally agree that the shot of the woman who didn’t want to be filmed was shitty, I remember feeling really uncomfortable when I saw that. I’m not saying he’s a bad person or anything, I just find some of the things he does a bit questionable.
