For the anime, they went actually with a anime original story containing characters, their backstories as well as the base foundation of DMC. Which does make quite a lot hard core DMC fans mad because they went with an anime original story as well as some certain behaviour patterns of characters, but thats maybe something you will notice when you decide to watch it.
