Fiyu's Blueprints Post-Skyvenom
🕑 Added 2025-02-01 18:00:08 +0000 UTCNext up we have Fiyu's blueprints! It's tricky trying to do qualitative improvements throughout a long series, so I understand why many series either use incremental powerups or give characters never-ending portfolios of skills. I'm not completely satisfied with Fiyu's soulcrafting in this book, but I tried to make these non-ascension improvements have some weight and impact.
Meanwhile, the Skyvenom release is still primarily depending on lacking cover art. I have seen multiple WIP versions, so hopefully the cover is on track for a February release.

Fiyu definitely uses her stairs for cantae flow. even though their main role is as a path for her Immortality Conduit. As for shielding walls, I think the only ascension related things that we've learned about them have been (1) they can contain and concentrate the power of ascension and (2) the soul can naturally sustain a slightly wider diameter as it grows. That second reason is why Theo pushed himself so hard to put his shielding wall so far out in book 4. That way he doesn't really ever need to rebuild it farther out. Also like all materials, the soul can sustain more and more powerful materials to compose that wall. I guess if you had to rebuild your wall farther out, you would need to do it with more potent stone that matches your new tier.

Aaah I’m misinterpreting the staircase on the ground floor, aren’t I? Looked more closely, and I was thinking the staircase started in her warmth chamber - but it’s actually starting in the lightstorm chamber, isn’t it? Thank you!

Bear in mind that Fiyu's cantae spirals in an anticlockwise direction as it goes up from tier to tier, following the path of the spiral staircases and the tripartite materials. As the cantae from the lightstorm chamber on the first floor ascends, it can mix with the cantae from the subliminalsteel on tier 3 and the demon court gem on tier 4 before reaching the flickerconcentrate, so she can modulate her cantae as required for whatever kind of lightstorm she wants to cast.

Seeing these, I don’t think I’d appreciated that there’s not a direct cante path from the light storm chamber to the flicker-concentrate/ifritbraid/demon court gem… does that mean that those just add in extra intense cante to the existing light storm flow as it exists Fiyu’s soulhome? If so, could it perhaps also function to intensify other things (like shadows or blade?) If it already works as a good “generic intensifier”, maybe an ethereal chamber on top to feed into it might be a good next design step for Fiyu…. 🧐

(Asked in the hopes that someone remembers better than me…) Shielding walls don’t *seem* to have the same urgency to build up before ascending, right? Given lots of people (including Theo) seem to have ascended without bothering. Can anyone remember if it’s implied Fiyu uses her stairs for cante flow between levels (like how Theo uses vents) e.g. between shadows chamber and shadow enhancement chamber? Not sure how those two work in use either - both have windows, so does Fiyu maybe have the choice of “fast shadows, straight out that window” and also “slower-to-activate stronger shadows, flowing cante from first chamber to second and then out that window”…?

Nauda's is the one I'm most interested in seeing! She's worked so hard to get back on pace :)

Fiyu being described as the most lethal authority in the city in skyvenom made me very happy. So often the circumstances of battle force her to act sub optimally. But one day Fiyu is just going to one shot no sell an enemy and it will be glorious. The amount of hoops you have to jump through to even have a chance at fighting her makes her so scary for litterally anyone who isn't a top tier authority or above, and even then if you don't have a sensory technique or big enough AOE youre fucked. But once she improves her intangiblity aoe won't even work anymore.

Fiyu might not have had such a major upgrade as the others this book, but she did do important work turning light storms up to 11 briefly to melt faces. Glad one of them is focussing on that area of improvement, and much more rewarding that it’s not *all* of them upgrading *every* skill to have an “11 in a pinch” level.

One more set of blueprints yet, plus I don't know when I'll be able to release Skyvenom. But yes, the next book is progressing well!

It was a bit unsatisfying for most of the book, but imo it was made up in the end. The first time she used the demon-ruby-deathray was perhaps one of the most epic scenes yet and is was very emotionally satisfyingly set-up with the semi-invincible thug, assassination attempt and the bond with Senka.

Looks great, Also iterative growth almost always trumps the end feeling of the eternal skill pile ups that many books fall victim to so don’t worry too much about that. Presumably the crimson crest book begins next week or so with a prologue?
