Chapter 84: Update
🕑 Added 2025-09-05 18:51:31 +0000 UTCNaruto's heart hammered, a dull, powerful thud against his ribs that drowned out every other sound. The initial helplessness dissipated, replaced by a wave of pure, cold adrenaline. He ignored the palpable tension in the room, Gai's broken figure, and the worried faces around him. He had a new variable. An ace up his sleeve that not even he had expected. One that could change everything.
He stood up with a movement so abrupt and decisive that the screech of the plastic chair against the linoleum was a sharp sound in the tense silence. All eyes turned to him. Gai looked up, a spark of confusion in his tear-filled eyes.
Naruto ignored them. His target was Tsunade. He approached her with quick, confident steps, lowering his voice to an urgent whisper.
"Grandma Tsunade, can I talk to you for a second? Outside. It's extremely important. It's about Lee's surgery."
Tsunade, the legendary Sannin, the world's greatest medical ninja, looked up from her meditation. Her brow was furrowed, a clear sign she didn't appreciate the interruption. But the discretion in Naruto's voice was so unusual, so alien to his usual character, that it intrigued her. She nodded, an almost imperceptible gesture.
"I'll be out for a moment," she announced, her tone leaving no room for argument. "Shizune, monitor the boy's condition. If there's an emergency, let me know."
Shizune nodded slightly with a bow.
"Yes, Lady Tsunade."
Tsunade stepped out into the sterile hallway, the fluorescent ceiling lights reflecting off the polished floor. Naruto was on her heels, closing the door softly behind them to ensure no one could overhear. As soon as they were alone, Tsunade's professional composure hardened. She crossed her arms, her gaze sharp.
"Speak," she ordered, her voice curt. "And make it quick. We don't have time for games, brat."
"The system just gave me a notification," Naruto explained, getting straight to the point. The urgency vibrated in every word. "There's an update available. I can update their Falna right now, this very instant." He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in. "Their stats will increase. Their chakra control, their stamina, their precision... everything. It could change that small percentage into something much, much safer."
Tsunade's eyes sharpened, her mind processing the information at lightning speed. The "Falna." That strange power that defied all the medical and scientific logic she knew, but whose results were undeniable. She had seen the transformation in Shizune with her own eyes, the incredible leap in her abilities. The idea of empowering the two apprentices who would assist her in a high-risk surgery was an advantage she couldn't ignore.
"Are you absolutely sure you can do it now?" she asked, her tone no longer that of an impatient teacher, but of a chief surgeon evaluating a new surgical tool. "No side effects? No adaptation period that could affect their performance? I need to know if there will be tremors, chakra fluctuations, anything that could compromise their steadiness."
"I'm sure," Naruto affirmed without a hint of doubt. "So far, every update has only made us stronger. There have been no side effects, beyond occasional, slight fatigue for me, but I'll be fine with a little rest. The effect is instantaneous, so there won't be any problem."
Tsunade stared at him for a long second, weighing the unknown risk against the certainty of potential failure. The decision was instant. In a situation like this, not taking an advantage was the same as accepting defeat.
"Alright," she finally said with a curt nod. "We can't let this give Gai false hope until it's a done deal, so I won't mention to him that saving his student is almost a certainty. I'm trusting you, kid."
She turned and re-entered the waiting room. Again, everyone's attention focused on her, fraught with a mixture of fear and expectation.
"Lady Tsunade, is everything alright?" Gai asked, jumping to his feet. A desperate spark of hope shone in his eyes.
"Everything is under control," she replied, her voice imposing a calm no one truly felt. "Before we proceed, my team and I are going to make one final preparation. I'll be taking an empty room in the hospital; I want privacy. You stay here and watch over your student."
Gai nodded, ready to obey any order. "Of course, Lady Tsunade. Whatever's necessary. Take all the time you need."
"Good," Tsunade replied with ironclad confidence. Her gaze swept over the group. "Shizune, Sakura, Hinata, Naruto. Come with me."
Without waiting for a response, she turned and led them down the hall with a determined stride. The small group followed, exchanging confused glances but not daring to question the order. Tsunade didn't stop until she found an empty storage room, filled with boxes of medical supplies and metal shelves. Once everyone was inside, she shut the door with a definitive click. The air filled with expectant tension.
"I spoke with Grandma Tsunade and asked for her opinion on this," Naruto said, taking the lead. "We have an update ready. It's a reward for the teamwork Hinata and Sakura showed in the exams. We need to apply it now, right before a task that requires you girls to be at your absolute peak performance."
"An update? Now?" Sakura voiced the doubt they all felt. "What if it messes with our pulse? Our control? We're already used to our power level for the operation as it is. Introducing a new variable right now could be counterproductive."
"Or it could be the difference between success and failure," Tsunade cut her off, her voice permitting no debate. Her medical judgment was absolute. "In an operation of this magnitude, every advantage counts, no matter how small." Her gaze fell on Naruto. "Proceed."
"Right," Naruto nodded. He looked at the most experienced ninja in the group. "Shizune, you're first."
Shizune nodded without hesitation, her professionalism overpowering her embarrassment. With a practical movement, she knelt with her back to him and slipped the collar of her uniform down just enough to expose her upper back. Naruto knelt behind her, bit his thumb in a swift motion, and with a drop of his blood, charged with dense, vibrant chakra, he gently touched Shizune's skin.
A subtle energy, invisible but palpable, flowed through the room. It wasn't a violent transfer of power, but something more intimate, unlocking a potential that was already latent within Shizune.
She exhaled slowly, a sigh that seemed to release all her accumulated tension. Her eyes flew open, focusing on her own hands. She flexed her fingers, feeling her chakra respond with a clarity and obedience she had never experienced. She could feel every strand of her energy—finer, firmer, more her own.
"Incredible," she murmured, more to herself than to the others. "I can visualize the creation of multiple chakra scalpels simultaneously."
"Sakura, you're next," Naruto said, his voice firm despite the slight drain he was beginning to feel.
Sakura sat without hesitation, her initial skepticism replaced by intense excitement. The process repeated. After Naruto's touch, she gasped softly, the sound muffled by surprise. She clenched her fists, feeling a raw, undeniable strength flood her muscles, but it wasn't brute force. It was accompanied by unprecedented mental clarity.
Finally, Hinata took her place. She knelt with her usual quiet grace, her heart pounding with a mix of nervousness and anticipation. Her update was different. It was the most conspicuous; the energy in the air almost crackled, making the hairs on everyone else's arms stand on end. When the process was finished, her Byakugan activated on pure instinct, veins bulging around her temples. The world transformed for her. She could now see the others' chakra networks with unprecedented complexity and detail, each with its own currents, tides, and subtle fluctuations.
Naruto prepared to stand, feeling the drain from the power he had channeled. A familiar dizziness began to cloud his vision, but just as he moved, a new, urgent, flashing notification stopped him in his tracks.
[WARNING: EXCESS POTENTIAL DETECTED IN RECIPIENT.] [SYSTEM'S BASE HAS NOT REACHED MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE TO PROCESS THE SURPLUS.] [CONVERT SURPLUS POWER INTO REINFORCEMENT FOR THE SYSTEM'S FOUNDATION?]
The logic hit him like a punch. It was a fundamental lesson: immense power without a solid foundation to support it was useless, even dangerous.
"Yes," he whispered, his voice barely a thread of air.
The interface changed, offering a simple option: [CONVERT]. Naruto accepted it mentally. The overwhelming sense of power he had felt before didn't grow; instead, it solidified. He felt a deep strengthening in his core, a stability he had never experienced before.
And then, the upgrades to his companions' abilities appeared in his vision, detailed and clear.
[ABILITY "PREDICTIVE VISION" (HINATA HYUGA) HAS EVOLVED] [Added Function: Can now accurately perceive a person's emotional state and intent through the subtle fluctuations and 'color' of their chakra network. Allows for anticipation of actions based on emotional impulses.]
[ABILITY "CHAKRA WEAVING" (SAKURA HARUNO) HAS EVOLVED] [Added Function: Allows for infusing chakra threads with extreme density, hardening them to the consistency of steel or making them as fine and sharp as a scalpel. Can create complex, semi-permanent structures.]
[ABILITY "ANALYTICAL EYE" (SAKURA HARUNO) HAS EVOLVED] [Added Function: Allows for the precise prediction of a physical or biological system's "breaking point." Enables the application of force or medical ninjutsu with devastating efficiency and precision, identifying the exact structural vulnerability to minimize collateral damage.]
[ABILITY "SILENT KILLING (SCALPEL)" (SHIZUNE KATO) HAS EVOLVED] [Added Function: Allows for the projection of multiple Chakra Scalpels from blind spots and complex angles simultaneously, controlling the trajectory and function of each one independently as an extension of the user's will.]
[ABILITY "RASENGAN" HAS BEEN ENHANCED] [The jutsu's power increases proportionally to the direct threat facing the user. Must be used with caution, as its use on strong targets can be detrimental to the user.]
When the last notification faded, Naruto stood up, discreetly leaning against a stack of cardboard boxes.
Tsunade, who had been observing the entire process with a hawk's intensity, stepped away from the door. Her expression was unreadable.
"Do you notice a difference?" she asked, her voice calm but curious. "What can you do now that you couldn't five minutes ago?"
Sakura stepped forward. "I think I can now predict the exact point of stress fracture in Lee's bone fragments."
"Go on."
"And my 'Chakra Weaving' can create threads as strong as steel and as fine as a hair."
Tsunade nodded slowly, her mind already incorporating these new capabilities into her surgical plan. She turned to her first apprentice. "Shizune."
"I can create more Chakra Scalpels," Shizune reported, her professional voice tinged with amazement. "I can cauterize, cut, and stabilize numerous blood vessels and nerve endings at once, from multiple angles. The risk of internal bleeding or accidental nerve damage is, in theory, almost zero."
Tsunade listened, her genius medical mind absorbing the implications. The odds had just shifted drastically. What was once a small possibility was now approaching a certainty. A wild, fierce smile, the kind she wore in the middle of an impossible battle, slowly spread across her face.
"Excellent," she declared, her voice echoing in the small room. She looked at Naruto, noticing for the first time the sweat on his brow and the pallor under his skin. "Rest for a moment, brat. You've spent a considerable amount of energy. Your ability to mold chakra at full power will be compromised for a while. Your work here seems to be done. Rest."
"Grandma Tsunade," Naruto interrupted, straightening up. His voice was quiet but loaded with determination. "I'll be in that surgery. I'm part of this team. I'm not sitting this out now."
Tsunade frowned. "Don't be an idiot. In your current state, you'd be a hindrance. I need everyone at their peak performance. Your stubbornness won't save Lee."
"But my chakra might," he retorted. "If they need an emergency infusion, or anything else... I have to be there."
"Lady Tsunade, if I may." Hinata's voice, soft but firm, cut through the rising tension. Everyone turned to look at her. "Naruto-kun has used up a large portion of his chakra reserves." She paused, meeting Tsunade's gaze. "However, my reserves are completely untouched. I can help Naruto. I'll be his backup battery."
Silence filled the room as Tsunade processed the proposal. It was a solution as ingenious as it was risky. It kept Naruto's unique abilities available while eliminating the risk of his failure. She looked at Hinata, then at Naruto, whose expression of surprise was mixed with overwhelming gratitude.
Finally, the Sannin nodded. "A bold proposal, Hinata. Very well. I accept."
Tsunade's smile was replaced by a mask of absolute concentration. She turned to her two surgeons.
"Sakura, Shizune. Let's go to the operating room. Prepare everything according to the new parameters. I'll see you there in ten minutes. Don't worry, Sakura, Shizune will help you know what to prepare."
Her voice left no room for doubt.
"There is no fifty percent today. There is no room for failure," she declared, her voice ringing with power. "Today, we are going to perform a miracle."
With that final declaration, she left the room. Sakura and Shizune exchanged a look and followed her hastily, their minds already racing, adapting their roles to their new, formidable capabilities.
The door closed, leaving Naruto and Hinata alone in the silence. The moment they were gone, he let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding and slid down the wall to sit on the cold floor. The adrenaline was fading, giving way to a deep exhaustion.
"That was... much more intense than last time," he admitted, running a hand over his face.
Hinata knelt beside him, her concern a warm, calming presence. "Naruto-kun, you've pushed yourself too hard. Your chakra is almost depleted."
"I'll be fine," he said, offering her a tired but genuine smile. "It was worth it. Did you hear her? It's not a gamble anymore. They're going to save him. They're really going to save him."
Hinata watched him. With her enhanced ability, she could see the fatigue like a gray fog in his chakra network, but beneath it, she saw something else: a brilliant current of pure relief and happiness.
"Yes," she whispered, a soft smile forming on her lips. "They will. And you, Naruto-kun, need to rest now."
He nodded, too tired to argue. He closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his strength.
Now, it was time for the miracles to begin.
