The black stuff that they ignited the fires with is "tar", it is actually "birch bark tar"....to make it, It is really as simple as it gets: Burn some birch bark next to a smooth rock. The evaporated oils will condense on the cool surface (and sometimes drip down onto the ground beneath the fire), from which they can be scraped off and collected. Collected in barrels, then in smaller buckets can be poured on objects to be able to be ignited just like motor oil...

This my very favorite movie. I'm so happy you're reacting to this. I started tearing up at the beginning of the movie and by the end was inconsolable.
